etc.).

Please DO NOT WRITE OR FORWARD TO THE GROUP ANY PETITIONS, VIRUS
WARNINGS, POLITICAL STATEMENTS, CHARITABLE REQUESTS, ETC. Do not send

Well said--let's get into the musical moment with Greg rather than
impose our memories of past hearings. As I used to say to my
former wife, expectations are just disappointments waiting to
happen.

Friday, An Overview:

Ok, I'm guilty as charged. I have a favorite day at the Ridge and hands
down, it is Friday. From noon to 5
PM is something called the Emerging Artist's Showcase. Here you get to see
some of the best new acts around the country. Musicians send in their tapes from
all over the US and then, from hundreds of entries, about 25 are chosen. Each
singer or group gets a chance to play two songs. The audience votes for the
"best of" and they return the following year to perform on main stage. Usually
only three of the acts are picked. Last year, we were graced with the
outstanding vocals of Rachael Davis, who is one of the hottest new female
artists in
the industry. Of course, hers was an easy victory. This year, Jeffrey Foucault
was in the competition, although he has already opened for Texas legend Guy
Clark and is becoming well known on his own. Whether you win or lose, playing
this showcase has become a great way to acquire a fan base and sell CDs.
Musicians like Pamela Means and Hugh Blumenfeld have boosted their careers by
winning
the emerging artist title. This year there was a twenty minute break, which
allowed the audience to stretch, get a bite to eat, cruise the vendors' tents
or just get out of the blistering sun.

During dinner break at main stage, there was a wonderful workshop called
"Study War No More." For almost an hour and a half, we were treated to the
musical genius of performers like Tom Paxton, Holly Near, Tracy Grammer, Richard
Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky, The Kennedys and the poetry of Tim Mason. This was
my first experience seeing Holly Near. An all around performer, political
activist and groundbreaking musician, Ms. Near is known for being the first
woman
singer to 'go independent' and start her own record label in the early
seventies. Without any instruments, Near performed the striking song, "Planet
Called
Home." She literally blew the audience away with her stunning vocals and her
powerful stage presence. Although I have often read about Ms. Near, I have
never seen her perform. For this writer, she was "the find" of Falcon Ridge
2003.
Her CD "Edge"
Is a wonderful overview of what she can do live. However, not even this
marvelous album does this lady justice.
Please see her if you ever get the chance. You will leave the venue in awe!

My other "find" for this year was a 19 year old prodigy named David
Jacobs-Strain. Thanks to our very own Ramcey, I was warned not to miss this
young
man's set. There are many guitarists out there but few who have the ability to
play this instrument the way he does. As Vance Gilbert said during a Saturday
afternoon workshop, "We need to put your young a** in a cage." Of course
Vance was referring to the exceptional way David plays the blues and how Vance
even had shoes older than him. Greg Brown mentioned what a treat it was to
perform alongside such incredibly talented younger musicians like Jacobs-Strain
and
Rachael Davis. After all, they are the future of music. With four CDs
already, David is on the way to becoming a vital force in today's Blue's
movement. He
has a deep respect for the genre itself. With his overwhelming knowledge of
the guitar, his sense of phrasing and his ability to mesmerize an audience,
Jacob-Strains' musical future is so bright that it is blinding.

There is a second reason why I love Fridays the best -- The Summer's Eve
Song Swap. This year the performers were Greg Brown, Patty Larkin, Vance
Gilbert and John Gorka, who acted as host. Done in round robin style, each
artist
takes their turn. This year it was obvious how friendly all four performers
were with each other. Gilbert's instrument decided to die, so he had to borrow
guitars from both Greg and Patty. This led to a very humorous exchange with
Larkin, as Gilbert wanted to take immediate possession of her guitar. She does
own some beauts. Probably the biggest applause of the entire evening came after
Brown started with the poignant "I Want My Country Back." There is something
almost earth shaking, hearing thousands of folks clapping and cheering after
this song. It was another clear, chilly summer night in the Berkshires, with the
music from main stage warming our hearts. Fern MacDonald

Saturday Highlights:

Another hot and sun-drenched day on the Ridge, with thousands and
thousands of people everywhere you turned. Despite our efforts, we were several
rows
back on the hill in front of the main stage. As the day wore on, the crowds
grew to a frenzy. By evening, when Greg Brown performed his set, the bodies
were packed together on tarps and blankets, like sardines in a can. Our
salvation
was the open aisle on one side of us. With the day extra hot and humid, and
the evening even more damp than past nights, everything felt extra clammy. It's
always that way in the Berkshires. The hotter it is during the daylight, the
damper it gets when the sun goes down. Because of all the above, we decided to
leave after Greg's set. Dar Williams would play solo and Arlo Guthrie would
bring along the entire family, but this lady was exhausted. Sometimes you just
have to miss things at a festival in order to enjoy what you can do.

Greg performed at two workshops during the day and we were able to catch
both, front and center. The first was one with Holly Near, Richard Shindell,
The Nield sisters and John Gorka. Always the perfect gentleman,
Greg allowed Near to do an extra song by making up a quick jingle. The crowd
loved it and Ms. Near was definitely moved by this gesture. Here he played
"Like A Dog" and "The Book." The second workshop was called "The Blues is Still
The News." Brown shared the smaller stage with Diane Ponzio, Rachael Davis and
David
Jacobs-Strain. Greg thrilled the audience with versions of Son House's
"Killin' Floor" and Taj Mahal's "Cakewalk Into Town." I never get tired of
seeing
Mr. Brown play the blues. The young, popular mainstream blues artist Jonny Lang
once said that Greg Brown was probably one of the best blues guitarists out
there. I tend to agree. Though categorized as a folk singer, Greg can sure charm
the blues out of any guitar! He also contributed "Little You," while Davis
sang Robert Johnson with such profound feeling, that her vocals would probably
have sent shivers up even ole Robert's spine.

The jewel of Falcon Ridge 2003 was definitely Tracy Grammer. Whether on
the workshop stage or performing her main set Saturday evening, Tracy managed
to captivate every audience. Last year, her partner Dave Carter was struck
down by heart failure. Their CDs had been played more than any folk act on most
alternative radio stations and "Tanglewood Tree" was voted to be the
overwhelming favorite by radio and folk audiences alike. Suddenly, last July,
Dave
Carter was gone. Tracy regrouped and only a week later stood on that Falcon
Ridge
stage alone. Her mission then was as clear as it is now -- to continue to
spread the music of Dave Carter. At both stages, Grammer did exactly that. She
tells stories of how Dave wrote the songs. Some came to him in dreams while
others
just "happened." As she speaks of him, there is a twinkle in her eyes. At
times, there are tears but when the audience begins to sing the words with her,
those same tears turn to joy. Dave Carter is and will be remembered as the
vital force in music that he was. Grammer is making that "was" an "is" and so,
in
the years to follow, people will continue to sing and play his music. He lives
on as long as his music does....and that is Tracy's
life work. Listen and sing his songs. You are hearing Falcon Ridge at its
finest hour. "Love IS a tanglewood
tree".....Fern MacDonald

I find the Johnny Lang comment entertaining. I was talking with Johnny's
sound guy a while back after a Pieta & Bo show at the Cabooze. He
mentioned that Johnny was a huge Greg fan. He also said that Johnny often
warms up during sound check with a Greg song or two. I think Johnny is
probably too busy to get out for Greg shows. I'll bet it was a real treat
for him to get to see the show.

Finally Greg Brown:

There would be some fun filled workshops on Sunday morning, before we
turned our little yellow Ford Focus around and headed toward home. Da Vinci's
Notebook would definitely leave us "Rolling In The Aisles." If
you've never seen them do their imitation of Meatloaf ("pull my finger") or
Bob Dylan, you're really missing something. Some of their material is simply
hilarious. Last year I saw them at a local club, where the show was being
recorded for TV's Comedy Central.

Don't miss the "Gospel Wake Up Call" on main stage Sunday morning. It's
a Falcon Ridge tradition and no matter what artists participate, you will be
glad you attended. (My favorite "Call" included Gillian Welch and
David Rawlings as part of the lineup.) This year was the return of Eddie From
Ohio, Da Vinci's Notebook, The Nields and The Kennedys, with a cameo
appearance by Vance Gilbert. By the time this hour is over, you will
find yourself singing along to many of the gospel hymns you heard in church
as a youngster. If you aren't a
Christian, fear not. Neither is the leader of this stunning event, one of the
musicians in Eddie from Ohio. It just doesn't matter. At Falcon Ridge, love
is all around and that's what this hour is about. Folks hold hands and hug
that have never before met. It's a beautiful time to be alive and even the
threat of a bad storm didn't dampen the music for anyone.

Still, my favorite set of the entire festival was Greg Brown's. Yes, I
am a big fan but sometimes festival sets
just don't do your favorite artist justice. Not this one! Greg came out and
he ROCKED the packed thousands. Backed by the incredibly talented Falcon Ridge
House Band (Mark Dann/bass & guitar, Radoslav Lorkovic/keyboards & accordion
and Tim Carbone/fiddle), Greg and the guys made that hill shake, rattle and
roll. Greg did a great mix of tunes in the short time he had and even got an
encore, something most musicians are never given with festival time constraints.
This was definitely the best performance I have seen Mr. Brown do at the Ridge.
He was animated and having the time of his life but was also a little
bewildered. How could so many folks find enjoyment sitting in the scorching heat
all
day, he wondered out loud? He chided the crowd about this and everyone seemed
to love anything he said or did. As for the sound, well it was superb,
especially for an outdoor venue. Greg has never been better and it was sheer
heaven
hearing him play with Rad again. It's been way too long! Fern MacDonald

for so many. FBM

Thanks for this, Fern. I figure most people on this List think of Greg as
principally a
folk-singer or as a singer-songwriter, but for me he has always been first and
foremost a
blues guy. I've got enough songs together for Volume 2 of "Brown and Blue" (your
copy of
Vol.1 is on its way, Betty Ann), it's just finding the time to collate the
thing.

You captured it perfectly Fern. Thanks for taking me back to that night.
There's not a whole lot to add re: FRFF, as Fern has done a really thorough
multi-chaptered review of the whole event. But, I would like to add that I
agree
that Greg's mainstage set was one of the best I've ever heard him do,
anywhere. Granted, I am a relative newbie to Greg and his music, so I don't
have as
many shows to draw from as some of you do.

I have been at FRFF for three years running now and camp with friends from
the Dar Williams list at campdar. In general this is a group who has not warmed
to Greg very easily. No one actively dislikes him, but they just seemed to
be unable to connect with his sheer brilliance. Not this year! The dar-list
reviews of FRFF are peppered with comments about Greg saying how great he is
and describing him as a "God." Well, d'uh! ;-) Makes me wonder what Greg fans
think of Dar. I seem to be the only person here on both artist's listserv.

Hello all! I finally get to write this- I have many papers due Monday, but
I have made enough headway to remember how much more pleasant last weekend
was than this weekend. I will write all the Greg stuff first, and random
Falcon ridge things at the end.

I'm glad Fern posted the set lists, so I don't have to worry about that.
SONG SWAP: A wonderful event. The comraderie on stage was evident, and I
am glad to see Greg performing in the last slot in a four person rotation.
Greg was continually asking what the theme was, which the others never could
quite supply. homages to greg: John gorka started a new song in the wrong
key (too low) and claimed he "must have been channeling the other end of the
stage here." When Vance Gilbert had to borrow Greg's guitar, he immediately
started singing and groaning an octave lower. AND, near teh end of the
night Vance made up a little tag to his song, which included snippets from
"the live one" as well as nits of john and patty's songs.

WORKSHOPS: Good stuff. THe blues was tremendous, although I missed the
last one (Taj Mahal) I ran over to the main stage, where DaVincis notebook
was singing. BTW, they have a dopey "fake folk" song with a repeating
chorus, and always lead a folkish singalong... this time on the repeat they
said, "Like Greg Brown!" They all started singing low, grunting, and
moaning "sexxxx...sexxxxx" Very exciting. The jingle Greg made up to save
time was impressive! I wondered if it was a children's song that I don't
know... something about "that's how you spell chicken." :)

GREG's set: OUTSTANDING! I always think greg is, but this was exceptional.
Very different! For one, he stood throughout. Secondly, he was quite
fashionable- wearing a suit, of all things. (I was pretty far away, but I
am pretty sure.) Gray suit with a matching visor. I kept expecting him to
take off the coat and be wearing a shirtless t-shirt or something, but it
never happened. It took me a while, but I fnially realized with the suit,
standing up with this unfamiliar band, I thought he was Del McCoury!! :)
Also, there was one extra band member besides those already mentioned.
Slide guitar and a few other things- maybe a member of Railroad Earth? Im
not sure. Greg's intro to "Inabell" was new to me..
"thank you both for coming today... as we all know, I am no longer an
ordained minister in the church of God, for reasons we don't have to go into
here... but the important thing is that InaBell is dead...."
I have also bever heard Greg speak to the crowd over the music, which he did
near the end of "these hills" in fact, he was quite verbose all night long,
including an extended story about his cousin Rosco and the inabell story.
He introduced and thanked the band, getting some names wrong, but
complimented them highly on their playing. Greg sang pretty melodically
this night. (my FRFF companion is not a greghead- but enjoyed his melodic
manner on this particular evening. She also only knows two songs off the
top of her head- InaBell and Canned Goods. GOod luck for her!)

**** greg content dwindles at this point!

The star of the festival was Rad!! He played with everyone and was just on
fire all the time. In fact, he played at the song swap- just the four
songwriters and Rad. What a talent!

I was trying to imagine a better Saturday night- Eddie from Ohio, Greg, Dar
Williams, and Arlo Guthrie all in a row. Wow.

Richard Thomposon- I had never seen before. He came out and played two solo
acoustinc songs- the first was Vincent Black Lightning- before the band came
out. From that point on, he mostly played a blue electric guitar. Wow!
Wish I was more familiar with his stuff to give a better report. The final
encore Crawl Back was phenomenally good. Just kept growing and growing to a
point that I didn't think it could go any further. Then it did. What an
opening night.

Arlo and his family performed well. I had bever seen Dar before- it was a
good set. Tom Paxton was very good- especially enjoyed his topical
political songs- some brand new, some from past decades. All week long I
have heard his voice going "Homeland Security! I feel safe, don't you?
(no!)"

Vance Gilbert. Wow. I had never heard him before and I am quite impressed.
Plus, he clearly owns several Greg CDs, which speaks well for the man.

I chanced upon one of my favorites from last year, Josiah from Gandalf
Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams, playing in front of a tent for a
crowd of twenty. Bonus!

THere were so many excellent artists! Even after that Saturday, being able
to soak in Richard Shindell, John Gorka, Vance Gilbert, and the Nields in
short order was truly amazing.

Regarding the overcrowding- we didn't have any problems. I suppose driving
in and out is more of a hassle. The only problems we had were loud camping
neighbors- and really, you can't much avoid that. ANd the almost total lack
of rain! I though we were in for three days of rain, for sure!

I will never miss this event again. In fact, I think I am going to add it
to my will. What a wonderful place!

OK,back to papers. One more week of classes ( i am quite excited for the
'real summer' to start.)

peace

josh

OK, Brownies and Brownettes, I need your help. There is a wonderful lister
who needs all our love and support. Many of you know Glenn Stenson. He's the guy
who has posted those great poems through the years. More important, he has
been a major supporter of In Harmony, Greg Brown and is just one heck of a guy.
Recently, Glenn had a serious operation to remove blockage in his arteries.
Right now he is in lots of pain. His hospital stay will be a lengthy one. I know
that it would mean the world to him to hear from those of you who know him,
through emails and/or personally. Last year, I went through a very rough health
period myself and folks on this digest and Fred Eaglesmith's really lent
their support with cards, notes and at times, gifts. I have cleared this with
his
wife Moe, who is a diamond herself.

PLEASE help Glenn to heal faster by sending much good cheer his way. A card
or a note will do or anything
you feel will help to lift this special man's spirits. Greg content -- he's
one of Greg's best fans, next to me, of course! :-) The address to send
anything follows and thanks in advance, Fern

(Moe can probably print any emails but from my own experience, a card would
be awesome. A friend of mine made a collage from the cards, notes and pics I
received, and it hangs proudly in my home!)

Josh and all,
I LOVE Gandalf Murphy and wish I had caught Joziah in front of that
tent. I didn't walk around as much as last year so I missed him....that
definitely
WAS a treat, you lucky guy. Yup, you really filled in all the blanks and
unfortunately, there were many in my reports this year!

The star of the festival was Rad!! He played with everyone and was just on>
fire all the time. In fact, he played at the song swap- just the four>
songwriters and Rad. What a talent!>

Rad has been in the FR House Band for several years now and does back many of
the performers. At Winterhawk a few years ago, Slaid Cleaves was completely
thrown by Rad's talents. After playing at a workshop stage with him, he got on
his knees behind the stage and proceeded to pretend to workshop him. It was
hysterical! Recently a dear friend of mine, who attends hundreds of concerts
each year, was finally treated to Rad's playing at a Jimmy LaFave concert in
Middletown NY. As usual, Rad just showed up! Jimmy and his entire band were in
awe
as Rad acted as if he knew every one of LaFave's songs....and he doesn't!
That's "our" Rad, alrighty. A mighty force in today's music, whether the general
public knows it or not!

he was quite fashionable- wearing a suit, of all things. (I was pretty far
away, >
but I am pretty sure.) Gray suit with a matching visor.>

Yes, GB was wearing a fine suit. As for being "verbose," well this happens
more often than you might think. Being a veteran of over 10 years worth of GB
concerts, I can definitely tell you that I have seen way more shows where he
tells stories and is quite funny, than when he hardly speaks at all. That's one
of the main reasons I keep seeing him. As Ramcey said, he is probably the best
at improvising and reinventing his music each and every time he gets on that
stage. For this lady, that IS heavenly. Thanks for writing a great review, Fern

Could it be "Chicken" by Mississippi John Hurt? Sounds like the last line of
the chorus, and it's a short tune.

Thanks for all the great FRFF reviews...

Nitefall on the River turned into Nitefall Under the Mirror Ball. Due to
threatening weather, it was moved inside to the ValAir Ballroom in West Des
Moines. The event presented by "Star 102.5" had several sponsors: Pepsi,
Embassy Suites, WHO-TV 13, Slumberland gave away a sofa to a listener. IMHO,
the Star 102.5 DJ/emcee had no clue of the talent she was presenting,
reading from a paper. In fact, she was left in the dust as Greg and the boys
started playing without an introduction. Then again, do they really need
one?

After the show, I tuned the car radio dial to 102.5. Got in on the end of a
techno- pop tune. Now, I'm listening to an advertisement for "Coral Ridge
Mall," (you know the one I'm talking about "with the big, big flag over the
big, big mall.") Don't get me wrong, it's great that corporate radio and
sponsors made the evening possible. Just felt a little like the Twilight
Zone.

Zollo's music creates dancers of out folks who really aren't, like lemmings
to the sea. It just happens. A beautiful little girl, maybe 3 or 4 years
old, found a patch of pink spotlight on the floor in front of the stage.
With her long red hair, fairy leotard and modern interpretive dance moves,
she "gives everyone a thrill."

The evening was not about the lyric, but the jam. No stories. Everyone was
in top form, but The King of Cool, Mr. Bo Ramsey was the star of the show.
A perfect blend with Ms. Pieta's songs of her soul. Perfect complement to
Zollo's keyboards. Fused solid with Rockabilly Brown. I can't describe it
justly. His perfomance leaves me in shock and awe, speechless.

Fashion report:
Greg Brown: Surfer Dude style, Sleeveless T, baggy stripe shorts, floppy
hat, buzz cut
Pieta Brown: Jeans, Sleeveless (inherited) black & white Op art tank-
sequined, red cowgirl boots

Hi Kate,

methinks ya got the date wrong on your Bridgeport, CT show.
if it's the show that i think it is, the date is 9-9-00, and it still
ranks as one of my all time favorite shows. it was at the
Beardsley Zoo and at one point in the show, there was a
peacock in the tree above us. GB was in great spirits both before
and after the show (including signing a woman's navel) and i have a
great memory in general from that show. glad you found it:)

Hello all, this got lost on it's way to the list so I'm resending it.

I thought this was going to be a very nice show, so nice in fact that I drove
the 630 miles from Ann Arbor, MI to go to it. Well, I think it paid off. Other
than the fact that I'm not used to such a short Zollo show, it was fabulous. I
liked seeing Greg with a full band, especially Dave and Brad, those two are good
guys. Greg was almost a rock n roll star with that band up there. Pieta was
great, I don't know much of her stuff as I've only seen her once before and
don't have her album yet. Dave Zollo rocked the place, especially with
"Recognize Me", definitely one of my favorites. "If I Had Known" was probably
my favorite part of Greg's set, I think that may be my favorite song of his. I
did tape the whole event from start to finish, but I left my DAT's in Iowa. My
brother is bringing them here today. I have the Greg set ready to go, I'll post
a separate "VINE" message.

Jake Larson
http://www.uneasystreet.com

PS: I saw Robert Hunter, Bob Dylan, and The Dead on Sat. in Joliet, IL and if
you have a chance to go to one of these events you should. It was simply
amazing. Robert Hunter was great, I never heard his stuff before. Bob was Bob,
which is just about perfect (I'm a bit of a Dylan fanatic). I'm a Grateful Dead
fan, but I don't really listen to them that much, but this was probably the best
show I've ever seen from any artist. I mean The Dead's show, not Dylan's.

Fern....
Glenn is doing so much better. I'm getting ready to go to the hospital. He

get moved to a regular room today. He has been getting clear liquids and he
takes his pain meds. by mouth now.
Thanks for all the prayers i know they are working
