Hi Kelly!

Great Question!! In fact, so good that I am devoting an entire
session to it at the TI:ME Conference in Tampa this January -
"Success in Building a Music Technology Lab."

This is an area that needs more than just general questions - to
spend between 5-10k, we have to get pretty specific about what you
are wanting to accomplish - what your outcomes will be.

For a Sky's the Limit, Pie in the Sky situation, that's a bit
easier - we can throw in all the latest gear and hope and pray that
it gets approved.

If you want to shoot me an email - jodyu@..., I would be
happy to share a proposal or two that I have created for some
schools in the Atlanta area.

SoundTree's consulting services are at no charge - With a dream this
big, you should consider speaking with me so that we can ensure
success for you and your program. Taking the guesswork out of the
process is key and must be done for the lab to work.

Thanks in advance! I look forward to hearing from you!

You would want Finale in the lab, a site license starts at 10 'seats'.
Each seat cost $120. The initial site license then cost $1200 and any
additional are $120 each up to 30, then the price per seat is only $100.

SmartMusic would be very beneficial to any music education system. You
may want to have computers to run SmartMusic on. SmartMusic is a $100 a
year for the 'base' computer and $25 a year for every computer past the
first one. Students and teachers can all sign up for $25 a year once
the first base subscription has been purchased for that school.

Thanks,

Tom Carruth

Hi Richard! Your article said to e-mail you about our technology
successes- I am using emusictheory.com in my AP music theory class and
it has proven to be a wonderful tool. It is not without its kinks, so
I am constantly bugging the Webmaster about ways to improve his site.
But as far as the students go- it has been wonderful! It is listed as
one of the top 20 sites by Stefani Langol in Focus on Instruction but
as far as I know it is the ONLY internet based site that allows you to
give students assignments and track their progress.
Also, I am in a technology class at UGA right now and I am working on
a huge project where I am having my students compose and then podcast.
I am only in the planning stages though.

Greetings Dr. Repp!

My name is Christopher Michaud and I teach music at Nebo Elementary in
Paulding County, Georgia. I am a member of GMEA and I read your
article in the Fall 2005 Georgia Music News.

I want to thank you for your article and support for music technology.
The links to the TI:ME website provided some very useful websites that
provide drill and skill type activities for rhythm and pitch that I
have been looking for. I plan to use these with my students.

You asked in your article for teachers to share their experiences with
technology in the classroom. I have worked with music technology
throughout my career and wanted to share some of the activities I
do in my elementary music classes. Because technology equipment is
scarce, I often use the "older" cast off computers and free/inexpensive
software options for my classroom. Some of my ideas may seem mundane -
but we all start somewhere!

I divide my use of technology into two main areas:

1. Teacher use for presentation or demonstration of musical concepts.

2. Student drill, creativity, or exploration.

In the first area, I use a computer (standard school district cast off
PC with Windows 2000) and an LCD projector to project lyrics,
music, and PowerPoints to my classes. I find the use of the projector
holds the
student's attention more than posters or transparencies. While I
have a class set of textbooks - scanning pages of text into the computer
and
using PowerPoint to show pages reduces the need to pass out books and
improves singing and posture.

In addition to the projection system, I use the Windows Wav file
recorder and Windows Media Player to record and playback individual
student singing. With Windows Media Player I set the visualization to
scope and we have done lessons on timbre and pitch while studying the
shape, frequency, and amplitude of sound waves.

I also use Finale's free notation software "Notepad" for pitch and
rhythmic demonstrations.

The entire computer and LCD projection system is connected to the room
sound system for playback.

For music playback in class I replaced the usual array of CD's with
one Flash USB memory stick plugged into the School PC. Again, with
Windows Media Player I access the music on the memory stick. The
advantage
here is that I have the entire library of class music in one place.
While
there are MP3 players and the IPod designed for music storage and
playback, I find using the simple memory stick provides an inexpensive
way to store music and playback on most computers. (I have used
Windows, Mac, and Linux for music playback)

In the area of student creativity I use mainly the sound recording
programs and Finale Notepad. My 4th and 5th graders currently are
working on a composing project where they write 4 measure patterns in
duple meter and then they transfer these files to Notepad and select
instrumental sounds for playback. My goal is to record these student
compositions on CD for my students to have.

For student drill and skill, I have the students use several websites
that feature Flash type games that drill students on note values,
pitch, and rhythm. I have also had students use the Internet for
research on composers for group projects.

Like most systems in Georgia, money is scarce for computers and
software. I have built my class room music systems using cast-off
computers and software already built into Windows/Mac and freeware
such as Finale Notepad.

Therefore, what and where would I like to see us go with technology
and music? What I would like to see is an exploration of open source
technology and software for the music classroom. I currently run
Linux (a Debian form) on most of my machines and the open source
software
lets me equip more student computers for much less money. I run the
open
source software equivalent to Internet Explorer, PowerPoint, Word,
Sound recording, and CD burning. What I have not found yet is a good
open
source version of a notation/sequencing program like Finale Notepad?
Will Coda music put out a version of Notepad for Linux? Are there
open source software versions for notation/sequence programs.

Thank you again for your support of Technology. I look forward to the
workshops at the GMEA convention.

GMEA News Convention Article

The 2006 Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service conference
will once again showcase a wide variety of technologies to support
music education. Technology is not a separate division within GMEA,
rather its purpose is to enhance the other areas in their use of
technology. We have put together a set of sessions that will be of use
to everyone from the technology novice to those maintaining a music
computer lab.

The featured speaker will be Floyd Richmond, an officer of the
Technology Institute of Music Educators (TI:ME). In addition to
serving on the Valley Forge Christian College music faculty, he is
frequently called upon for school in-service days, local, state, and
national conferences. He is the author and editor of numerous
articles, chapters, and books on music technology. At TI:ME, he is the
chair of the education and curriculum committee and he teaches TI:ME
courses at a number of locations around the country.

Dr. Richmond will present four interconnected sessions on the use of
technology in music education. The first session will provide a survey
of the technology most used by music educators today, highlighting an
overview of software features, comparisons of similar programs, and
observations on the current use of technology in music instruction.
The second session will provide an overview of resources available to
improve music instruction through the use of music technology. Focus
will be on the efforts of the TI:ME, a non-profit organization. The
third session includes numerous instructional activities using
technology that can be implemented in the music classroom at no cost.
The final session will examine trends in music technology and their
impact on music and education. Topics will include the increased
availability of more powerful technologies, the decreasing size and
cost of technology, improved communications, electronic instruments
and programs that make performance and composition easier.

Additional presentations will feature GMEA members, university
professors, and music industry representatives. GMEA members John
Tsibert and Peter Tavalin will show examples of Assisted Composition
at Shuman Middle School and how it meets the varied needs of General
Music Students while addressing National Music Standards. Lee Johnson
and Kimberly Walls will explore internet issues, Leonard Ball will
discuss web pages, and Frank Clark will demonstrate new uses of
technology.

Of course, attendees will have the chance to increase their software
skills. Apple Computer will supply a 16-station computer lab to allow
educators hands-on experience with new software. Demonstrations
include GarageBand and podcasting from Apple (including a drawing for
a free iPod!), Finale and SmartMusic from MakeMusic, Sibelius and its
related educational suite, and, for the first time at GMEA, Mibac
Music Lessons and related software. Please also visit theses
representative in their booths.

For the first time the conference will feature a panel discussion -
where professors from major colleges and universities join to discuss
educational opportunities for students and professional development
opportunities for in-service teachers. In addition to the professors,
all presenters are encouraged to participate in this discussion as we
brain storm ideas for improving technology-based education in the
state. Questions from audience members will guide the discussion. We
hope that this panel, Friday at 11:00, will serve as a meeting place
to begin to develop a core of GMEA members with an interest in
technology. This is the place to rub shoulders with the
technology-minded in Georgia music education.

Unlike the main divisions of GMEA, technology is not a separate
entity. The technology presentations exist to support the other
divisions of GMEA. The natural tendency at conferences is to attend
the presentations in one's own area. We hope we have designed a
set of
presentations that will cause people to walk down the hall to rooms
102 and 103 for something a bit different. The presenters trust that
educators and students from all sub-disciplines of music will attend
the sessions and explore the computer lab.
