MICHAEL W. SMITH has been nominated by President George W. Bush to serve a two-year term as a member of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. The council was established in January 2003 on the first anniversary of the USA Freedom Corps to help promote and recognize the contributions that Americans of all ages and backgrounds have made through volunteer service. Smith will join other leaders who represent the private and non-profit sectors, entertainment, athletics, education and government who each share a

A nationwide two-month talent search for Christian music’s newest star kicks off tonight (January 9th) in Phoenix, AZ. “Gifted” is a collaboration between Johnny Wright of Wright Entertainment Group (and the manager of Britney Spears, *NSYNC, the Backstreet Boys and Justin Timberlake) and Matthew Crouch, founder of independent
film company Gener8Xion Entertainment and the son of the creators of Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN.) Originally scheduled to be held in the fall of 2004, the new Wright Gener8Xion Entertainment agency will finally have the opportunity to produce this series of local competitions in January and early February at “mega-churches” across the United States. Contest participants, who must be at least 18-years-old, will sing a cappella versions of classic hymns such as “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace,” “Blessed Assurance” and “Holy, Holy, Holy” at local competitions in cities including Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, Hollywood and St. Paul, Minnesota. In what could be Christian music’s counterpart to “American Idol,” local judges will send videos of their favorite performances to the producers, who will then select candidates to
participate in four regional competitions.
TBN will televise the finale in March with Christian solo artist and Backstreet Boy BRIAN LITTRELL hosting the special. Gifted’s grand prize winner will receive a major-label recording contract, career management by the Wright Entertainment Group and day-to-day support from Wright Gener8Xion Entertainment. Also a $10,000 donation will be made to the church where the winner originally auditioned. <><
SOUNDBYTES:
Passion ’06, a four-day indoor gathering for college students, drew 18,000 on opening day last week at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in downtown Nashville. Speakers Louie Giglio, John Piper and Beth Moore and lead-worshipers CHRIS TOMLIN, DAVID
CROWDER*BAND, CHARLIE HALL and MATT REDMAN helped unite attendees from all fifty states and twenty countries.<>< Alternative Christian rock quintet FURTHER SEEMS FOREVER is disbanding after seven years together. Band members report on their website that some unreleased material and a DVD of live footage and videos will soon be available.<><
