I just read a story that has inspired me to continue to help spread the gospel through music.  Rolling Stone magazine recently printed an article about a mainstream rapper called "Afroman" who has traded drugs for a Bible!  According to platinum-selling artist Joseph "Afroman" Foreman, "there's more to life than smoking weed and singing about it."  The rapper who produced a novelty hit three summers ago with the stoner anthem, "Because I Got High," has been "dope- and booze-free for more than seven months (he thinks, though he can't really remember) and has traded glorifying bongs and babes in favor of praising the Lord," the article states.  "Believe it or not, I'm developing some maturity," says the twenty-eight-year-old Foreman who left Los Angeles for rural Hattiesburg, Mississippi shortly before his hit single helped his major-label debut album, "The Good Times," sell more than one million copies. "I'm realizing that life is bigger than me and my little clique and my little songs," Foreman explains.  "I've been reading the Bible and taking a look at life," the rapper adds.

It is so gratifying to know that even "Afroman" can be changed by God's Word.  Just think--what if immensely popular rapper Eminem got saved and how much influence he could have on the lives of millions of young people!--Chuck Halley, publisher<><

In the news:
Leon Patillo, a Christian music artist and the former lead singer for the '70's rock group Santana, has been arrested by federal agents "over a real estate check," according to his wife, Renee Patillo.  "It's not ministry related, but it's from a long time ago.  That's all I know."   Mrs. Patillo adds, "I don't have any idea when he'll get out.  Everything is still in process.  Everything is being worked out.  Please pray for us."  The 56-year-old singer is being held at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino, California and is not allowed to post bail.  Patillo received Christ, quit the band led by Carlos Santana, entered a Bible study course, and was ordained by Calvary Chapel founder Chuck Smith, according to his website.  The artist has several Christian albums and hosted a weekly television program on the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN). <><

Canada's "Vibe Awards" were held recently in Calgary, Alberta with Carolyn Arends ("This Is The Stuff," "Big Deal," "New Year's Day") coming out this year's big winner!  Arends won two awards for "Female Vocalist of the Year" (for the second year in a row) and "Inspirational Album of the Year" for "We've Been Waiting For You."  Also brother band Jake won a Vibe Award for "Contemporary/Pop Album Of The Year" for their "Army Of Love" CD.  The Vibe Awards commemorate the best Canadian Christian artists and are voted on by fans in the country. <><

Jim Carrey's new film "Bruce Almighty" has created an uproar while topping the box office this past weekend.  If you've seen the movie, you probably caught Plumb's song "God Shaped Hole" (from the album "Candycoatedwaterdrops".)  The song from Plumb (aka Tiffany Arbuckle Lee) is also featured on the hit movie's soundtrack. <><

Over 20,000 students and adults gathered for OneDay03 at a private 400-acre ranch near Sherman, Texas during Memorial Day Weekend to worship God and pray for spiritual awakening.  Students from all 50 states and several nations including Australia, Japan, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and Puerto Rico assembled for "intercession, celebration, confession, reflection, adoration, and repentance."  Speakers included Passion founder and director Louie Giglio, authors Beth Moore & Joshua Harris, actor Kirk Cameron, and former captive missionary Heather Mercer.  Worship was led by lead worshipper Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Charlie Hall, Watermark, Shane (Bernard) & Shane (Everett), and The David Crowder Band.  Attendee Beth Dixon, a 24-year-old student from the University of Wisconsin, says she really enjoyed hearing Heather Mercer talk about missionary work.  "It is exciting for me to meet with God; that is why I am here.  OneDay echoes what is beating in my heart.  I really understand the heartbeat of (Louie Giglio's) Passion for uniting college students," she said. <><
