In the news this week--
Rebecca St. James continues to celebrate the success of her "Worship God" album that has now been certified "Gold" with sales of over 500,000 units.  BMI and Forefront Records threw a big party in Nashville last week for St. James with almost 200 media, label, and distribution people in attendance along with the singer's pastor and a rep from Senator Rick Santorum's office.  Also Rebecca's next single, a duet with Chris Tomlin entitled "Expressions of Your Love," will release in August. <><

Charles Billingsley has been named the new worship leader at Thomas Road Baptist in Lynchburg, Virginia (TV evangelist Jerry Falwell's church.)  The former lead singer for NewSong will also be the "artist-in-residence" and facilitator of the new Praise & Worship degree at Falwell's Liberty University.  Billingsley's next album, "Secret Conversation," is set for a July 1st. street date on the new label "Perpetual Entertainment Group." <><

Chris Rice has a new single called "Smile" that is moving up the charts, so the singer's label wants to find out what makes his fans smile.  Rocketown Records is sponsoring a contest with the winning grin receiving a framed print of a painting of Rice from artist Jimmy Abegg autographed by both the painter and the performer.  You can email a photo (.jpeg) of your best smile to
smile@... with winners posted weekly on the label's website. <><

Speaking of contests, Maranatha! Music is asking listeners to pick one of the songs off their recently released album "You're Worthy Of My Praise" and record their own vocal version of the tune that must be submitted by July 15th.  The winner (and guest) will get the opportunity to spend two nights at the Dana Point DoubleTree Guest Suites hotel in Orange County, California and sing on an upcoming Maranatha! worship project.  For more info, official rules, and to download a submission form, visit
www.maranathamusic.com. <><

Worship Extreme Records has released a new album that Joey Elwood, the president of Gotee Records, is calling "songs (you've) come to love, in a way (you) haven't heard them before."  "Octane 1.0" is a  fresh new arrangement with the original vocals from artists including Delirious?, SONICFLOOd, Out of Eden, O. C. Supertones, The Katinas, Crystal Lewis, and Tree 63 remixed with the sounds of "hip-hop, DJ dance mix, techno, funk, nu soul, drum & bass, R&B, and reggae dance grooves" reworked through a "techno machine."  The project was created and produced by the "Dunamis" production team of Dove Award-winning producer Glenn Wagner; producer/engineer Alan Shacklock (Newsboys, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Meatloaf, Roger Daltry); Sam Shacklock (who has toured with ZoeGirl and Avalon); and Chris Blair (Sting, Oasis) who mastered the album at Abbey Road Studios in London, England. <><

A Nashville newspaper, The Tennessean, has reported that songwriter Andrew Gullahorn, the husband of CCM artist Jill Phillips, has been arrested on charges of "unlawful photography without consent."  In the story Music City police reported that Gullahorn confessed to videotaping several women in dressing rooms at various clothing stores at a mall in Franklin, Tennessee.  Gullahorn is being held at the Williamson County Jail and officials report that he may face up to a year in jail.  On her website, Phillips is asking fans to keep her entire family in your prayers during this difficult time. <><

Best-selling author Max Lucado is releasing a companion music album with his new book, "Next Door Savior:  Near Enough To Touch, Strong Enough To Trust" (W Publishing Group.)  Set to hit the streets on August 12th., the CD will include nine classic hymns plus two original songs from Michael W. Smith, Third Day, Sarah Sadler, Wes King, Fernando Ortega, Selah, Ginny Owens, Warren Barfield, and Watermark. <><

The most popular Christian music band has got to be the platinum-selling MercyMe!  The Gospel Music Association's Song of the Year for 2002, "I Can Only Imagine," has now charted at #19 on the mainstream Adult Contemporary and #41 on the Contemporary Hit Radio charts.  The music industry is witnessing one of the biggest surprises in recent times with a contemporary Christian music song that is garnering airplay on radio countdown shows such as Casey Kasem's "American Top 20" and being featured on Leeza Gibbons' "Hollywood Confidential."  Also "Almost There," MercyMe's almost three-year-old album that features the hit song, has re-entered the Billboard Top 200 sales chart. <><

New band Liberty 'n' Justice is scheduled to release a new album on October 28th. that features different guest vocalists on each song (similar to Carlos Santana's last few CDs.)  The 15 tracks on "Welcome To The Revolution" (3 Chord Records) highlight guest vocalists such as Lou Gramm (Foreigner), Michael Sweet (Stryper), Jamie Rowe (Guardian, London Calling), Bob Carlisle, John Schlitt (Petra, Head East), Greg X. Volz (Petra), Wes King, Mike Roe (77's), Dale Thompson (Bride), Doug Phelps (Kentucky Headhunters), Mitch McVicker, Rick Florian (White Heart), Scott Wenzel (White Cross), Jeff Fenholt (Black Sabbath, TBN host), and Paul Q. Pek. <><

Curb Records and Word Entertainment will partner together to release the new CD from Jonathan Pierce slated for a September street date.  The album, "For You," will be promoted to mainstream radio as well as to the key Christian audience of the former member of The Cathedrals and the Gaither Vocal Band.  According to the label's press release, "the multi-level marketing plan for (Pierce's) new album will include visits to both Christian and mainstream retailers, national television appearances, and a promotional trip to the United Kingdom." <><

SOUND BYTES:  Rachael Lampa recently graduated from Monarch High School in Colorado.  The 18-year-old is currently touring with Geoff Moore on Compassion International sponsored dates and is also working on a new studio project set to be released later in '03…Leigh Nash, frontwoman of Sixpence None the Richer, has recorded "A Charmed Life" that will be featured in the MGM film, "Uptown Girls" (starring Brittany Murphy, Heather Locklear, and Dakota Fanning), which hits theatres nationwide on August 15th.
