In this week's news, another member of AVALON calls it quits; open audition call for the newest member of TRUEVIBE; STEVEN CURTIS CHAPMAN goes mainstream; MERCYME goes platinum; artist birthdays; album releases; Ark-La-Miss concerts; "The Top 10 Reasons That You Should Not Go To Your High School Reunion"; and much more!
In the news this week--
Michael Passons, an original group member of AVALON, has officially left the Dove and American Music Awards-winning group. This makes the third member of the popular quartet to quit (Cherie Paliotta, who joined the group in 1998 replacing original member Nikki Hassman, left a few months ago.) According to a released statement, "Michael has decided to leave Avalon in order to move on to the next stage of his life and career. We deeply hope that Michael's future is as fulfilling and rich as his past has been with the group." GREG LONG, the husband of Avalon member JANNA POTTER-LONG, has been filling in for Passons at their concerts until a permanent replacement is named. <><
The Gospel Music Association's 29th. Annual Seminar in the Rockies is now soliciting performers for its national talent competition. Attendees will learn from top music professionals and showcase their musical abilities at what the GMA calls, "the most important competition for Christian artists--the Academy of Gospel Music Arts' Spotlight 2003." A few of the artists discovered through the Seminar include JARS OF CLAY, POINT OF GRACE, NICHOLE NORDEMAN, and JACI VELELASQUEZ. The weeklong retreat in the mountains of Colorado has classes for artists, songwriters, musicians, praise & worship leaders, and would-be music industry professionals and a Kid's Kamp, Teen Connection, and the annual Women's Retreat. Also there will be a half-dozen nightly concerts with CCM artists MICHAEL W. SMITH, AMY GRANT, MERCYME, AVALON, 4HIM, and others. For more info, visit http://www.gospelmusic.org/seminar. <><
Jonathan Lippmann, ex-98 Degrees member and founder of the now defunct Christian boyband TRUEVIBE, has announced open auditions for the final spot for the reincarnation of his group. According to Lippmann, qualifications include being a "male at least 21-years-old" and having "a strong passion for singing for the Lord AND the ability to sing in a tight, 4-part harmony group (meaning you must have a great ear.)" Lippmann also adds for hopefuls to know that "we will NOT be dancing this time around in TRUEvibe." If you would like to possibly get the opportunity to audition for the new band, send a recent photo, a list of any musical training or experience, three references (unrelated to you), and a non-returnable video or audio tape with singing "that will show off your strengths, as well as singing a scale from your lowest note to your highest note in the "chest" with the last few notes in your "head voice," Lippmann added. Send this info to: TRUEvibe Auditions, P.O. Box 1384, Brentwood, Tennessee 37024. If you're chosen to audition, Lippmann stresses to "be prepared to share your testimony and meet with the pastor overseeing the group." <><
ERIN O'DONNELL has signed with Inpop Records with her first album set for a street date of October 21st. The record is being produced by Alain Mallet and Mark Hammond (NICHOLE NORDEMAN, CINDY MORGAN, JUMP 5) with songs written by O'Donnell along with CINDY MORGAN and Pete Kipley. The successful singer has released three projects, "A Scrapbook of Sorts", "Scratching the Surface", and "No Place So Far", which have produced ten Top 10 hits including a #1 song, "Be Still and Know" and also "No Better Place", the #2 "Adult Contemporary Song of the Year" in 1996." <><
Another Contemporary Christian artist has now hit the mainstream music charts. Following on the heals of MERCYME's Top 20 hit "I Can Only Imagine", STEVEN CURTIS CHAPMAN is at #30 this week on Radio & Records magazine's general market Adult Contemporary chart with "How Do I Love Her" from his latest album, "All About Love." Also the single is being played on the nationally syndicated "Love Songs" heard nightly by millions of listeners on over 200 radio stations nationwide. The show's popular host Delilah also interviewed Chapman on the air and complemented the singer on his beautiful song. <><
MERCYME's first INO Records album, "Almost There", has been certified platinum by the RIAA (sales of more than one million units.) The CD's recent rise in sales is because of the mainstream radio success of the hit single "I Can Only Imagine," which has climbed from #19 to #16 this week on Radio & Record's mainstream AC radio chart. Also it was bound to happen---a new Country radio version of the song written after the death of MercyMe frontman Bart Millard's father has been released by Country star Jeff Carson and has debuted this week on R&R's Country chart at #48! <><
SOUNDBYTE: P.O.D.'s next album, called "Payable On Death", is due on store shelves in November and will feature studio work from CCM artist PHIL KEAGGY. Reports are that new P.O.D. member Jason Truby is a fan of Keaggy's and personally asked him to record with the band in Los Angeles. <><
