In the news this week-
Cross Driven Records, an imprint of Here To Him Music which is owned by C.E.O. John Howard and President Ryan Howard in West Monroe, Louisiana , has been very busy these days signing some impressive new artists. Already their newest label mates, MARGARET BECKER and TINMAN JONES, have released new albums and now news is that KELLY MINTER has been signed with her new album scheduled to be released on October 7th. But the biggest event this year at Cross Driven is their recent signing of the legendary CARMAN! According to Dennis Disney of D-Squared Entertainment in Nashville who oversees label operations for the Here To Him Music Group, a multiple year/multi-project agreement with the multiple gold and platinum artist has been inked. Carman's first project will be "House Of Praise" that is set to hit store shelves on September 9th. with a full-length DVD scheduled to be released November 4th. <><
Remember Sawyer Brown, the Star Search-winning band that had numerous Country hit records in the late 80's and early 90's? Mark Miller, the group's founder and frontman, has formed a new Christian music record label to be distributed by Provident Music. The new label is still unnamed right now but Miller has announced that his label's flagship artist will be the Atlanta-based CASTING CROWNS, who will release their debut album on September 30th. Miller says the development of an imprint record label has been a goal of his for years. "As a performer, writer, and producer, it's important that I encourage and mentor talent I believe in," Miller commented.
STEVEN CURTIS CHAPMAN, a long-time friend of Sawyer Brown's ex-lead singer, co-wrote some of the project's songs with Casting Crowns' lead singer Mark Hall and also co-produced their debut record. The label's first artist has been the worship band for their home church in Atlanta for three years and has their own website, www.castingcrowns.com. <><
Another good indicator of the growing popularity of Christian music is that two brand new radio charts have just been initiated at the music industry's leading publication, Billboard Magazine. According to Wade Jessen, the director of Christian, Country, Gospel, and Bluegrass Charts for Billboard, the new "Hot Christian Adult Contemporary" and "Hot Christian Singles and Tracks" charts will help to significantly advance Christian music to readers that use his magazine for chart data and industry trends. "These charts will enable us to honor Christian music's top producers, publishers, songwriters, imprints, and labels in our annual 'Year In Music' issue, and periodic recaps in these categories will be an invaluable enhancement to Billboard's editorial coverage of the religious music industry," Jessen said. <><
The Ultimate Talent Search is on again for its 10th. year with over $50,000 in prizes being offered, including a song publishing contract for the grand-prize winner. The competition will be held this fall at Nashville's Opryland Hotel and Resort with all finalists getting to perform for various professionals in the Christian music industry with the winning artist's song recorded and distributed nationwide to Christian radio. Entry forms to audition for the upcoming talent search are available online at www.embassymusic.com or by calling the Ultimate Helpline at 615-345-2500 (entry deadline is August 27th.)
Also former Ultimate Talent Search finalist Leeland Dayton Mooring has recently signed a publishing agreement with EMI Christian Publishing. Mooring will write with some of EMI's top writers and lead worship at upcoming "Worship Together" events in Chicago and Nashville. <><
SOUNDBYTES: MERCYME's "I Can Only Imagine" continues its phenomenal climb up the mainstream radio charts with legendary rock station Z100 in New York City adding the Dove and Grammy award-winning single to their playlist! <>< ERIC CHAMPION has just completed a new album, his first in over seven years. The former Essential Records artist had quit performing several years ago and has been working at Full Sail, a recording studio and college for sound technicians. No word yet on a label or a release date. <>< Congratulations are in order for NICHOLE NORDEMAN who gave birth to a baby boy last Friday (July 18th.) Charlie Thomas weighed in at 6 pounds 11 ounces and mommy, daddy, and baby are doing just fine! <>< Music publishing conglomerate ASCAP recently honored Chrissy Conway of the girl trio ZOEGIRL with a top airplay writer award for her group's hit song, "With All Of My Heart." The winning tune has won both ASCAP and BMI writer awards for being one of the 25 most-performed Christian songs of 2002. <>< KRISTY STARLING's "As Long As We're Here" from her self-titled debut album will be featured this summer on promotional spots for NBC's comedy, "Friends." <>< OUT OF THE GREY'S Christine Denté has just completed her first solo project called "Becoming," which has a street date of October 7th. The 10-song project is produced by her husband and Out of the Grey partner Scott Denté. <>< KIM HILL's new project, "Surrounded By Mercy", is the fifteen-year music veteran's eleventh album. This collection of worship songs is co-written with RITA SPRINGER and SCOTT KRIPPAYNE and includes covers of CHRIS TOMLIN's "Famous One" and the traditional tune "Revive Us Again" arranged by ASHLEY CLEVELAND. "Surrounded By Mercy" is set to be released on Spirit-Led Records on August 26th. <><
