In the news this week--
The sixth album featuring music from the PASSION conferences is set for release on August 19th. The project was recorded live at the "OneDay03" gathering held in Sherman, Texas during last Memorial Day Weekend. Over 20,000 students from every state and several foreign countries (including Switzerland, South Africa, Japan, and Australia) gathered to worship and pray for "spiritual awakening in this generation." The album will include new Praise & Worship songs from lead worshippers CHRIS TOMLIN, DAVID CROWDER BAND, CHARLIE HALL, and MATT REDMAN. The five previous Passion CDs recordings have sold almost one million albums. <><
The "Celebration Tour" with MICHAEL W. SMITH and MERCYME kicks off a 19-city tour this fall on October 16th. with stops scheduled in Jackson, Mississippi and New Orleans, Louisiana. According to recent interviews with the tour's featured artists, Smith and MercyMe are looking forward to this tour. "I'm excited about dusting off some of my older songs and performing 20 years worth of music," Smith says. "It will be fun to share everything from the early hits to the music from the Worship records on this tour," he added. Also MercyMe's frontman Bart Millard says the band feels "honored" for this opportunity. "To tour with Michael W. Smith is a dream come true! All of us in MercyMe are life-long fans of his music and, more importantly, his ministry," Millard commented. For tour dates, see www.michaelwsmith.com or www.mercyme.org . <><
HILLSONGS lead worshipper and songwriter DARLENE ZSCHECH ("Shout To The Lord") will release her first solo studio album on INO Records on October 14th. "Kiss of Heaven" will feature a collection of songs the singer feels "didn't fit on a traditional Hillsongs project" and will include tunes ranging from "more personal worship songs to a love song for her husband" and a cover of "Walk On" first recorded by Irish mega band U2. Zschech, who is the producer and worship leader on most of her church's live worship projects, denies she may be departing as worship pastor of the Hillsong Church in Sydney, Australia (a position she has held for 18 years.) "I'm still the worship pastor there. Nothing in that is changing," Zschech maintains. "There's been this holy calling to see worship in truth reestablished around the globe, and that job is not done yet," she added. <><
In some tragic news, the brother of BLEACH band members Jared and Milam Byers has been killed in Iraq. According to the group's label, Tooth & Nail Records, and news reports, Josh Byers died in an RPG attack on his military unit. Jared and Milam were very proud of their brother and, ironically, had asked the art staff at Tooth & Nail just the night before his death to include a photo of Josh in the Middle East on their upcoming album. The Byers family is asking for everyone's prayers during this time of grief. <><
SOUNDBYTES: GREG LONG is staying extremely busy these days as he fills in for Michael Passons, who quit AVALON several weeks ago, and is performing along side his wife JANNA POTTER-LONG, one of the last original members of the award-winning vocal group. Long is also getting some TV experience with host duties on Trinity Broadcasting Network's new missionary reality series called "Travel the Road." <>< Speaking of TBN, the world's largest television network is airing a major profile on REBECCA ST. JAMES on her 10th anniversary in music (tentatively scheduled for August 1lth.) St. James is also taping an hour-long special for Trinity Broadcasting and two 30-minute specials for the Inspiration Network this summer. <>< PAX 217 opened for legendary rocker Ted Nugent at a concert in Virginia last week. <>< The Gospel Music Association is adding a "Worship Song of the Year" category for next year's Dove Awards. The new category will recognize songs that are "impacting churches around the country." <>< Canadian artist CAROLYN ARENDS' song "There You Are" is featured in the new teeny twins Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen movie, "When in Rome." <>< O.C. SUPERTONES' bassist Tony Terusa has quit the Ska and Reggae band. A statement from guitarist Ethan Luck says that, "The fact is, (Tony's) family is his main passion now, not that music is not, but when people like Tony get married and have a kid, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, being in a touring band." Chris Beaty, formerly of SEVEN DAY JESUS, will take over bass guitar chores. <>< PHAT CHANCE, who is now known as STEREO MOTION, will release their self-titled album with their new moniker on September 2nd. "Rise," boy band members Brent, Bryan, Dallas, and Justin's first single from their new project, can be checked out at their website, www.stereo-motion.com . <><
