IN THE NEWS:
RUSS LEE is heading to Iraq during the week of November 17th.-25th. to sing and minister to over 20,000 U.S. troops stationed in Mosul, Qayyarah, Tall Afar, Irbil, and Sinjar. The CCM artist was invited by the 101st. Airborne Division from Ft. Campbell, Kentucky to not only perform for them but to spend time meeting one-on-one with the soldiers and host prayer breakfasts and luncheons. Lee's visit is scheduled during a recent escalation of hostility in Iraq and Saudi Arabia, as soldiers are facing heightened issues of security and morale there. "Soldiers are dealing with loneliness, security, relationships, and an extended length of tour," according to Lt. Colonel Chester C. Egert, the 101st.'s Chaplain. "They also deal with family issues back home (with) fidelity in marriage also a big concern." But Lee looks at this potentially dangerous area as a mission field: "I want our troops to know that God is even more concerned with this situation than they are. He is concerned about them and their families. They need to see gratitude, encouragement, and God's love." <><
Two former members of the defunct TRUE VIBE have formed a new group called SOJOURN FARE. Nathan Gaddis and Jordan Roe have stayed busy writing new songs and now promise fans they can expect "more depth" from the duo's new project: "Lyrically, we are trying to go to a place that we never really got to go to while we were in True Vibe," according to Gaddis. "Now we're writing in a style that shows who we are and reveals more of our heart." Both Gaddis and Roe, who have backgrounds as worship leaders, will be playing their own instruments (this time) and are striving for "a more acoustic guitar-driven, live-instrument sound" in their concerts.
Another original True Vibe member, Gilbert, Louisiana native Jason Barton, initially signed a "demo" record deal along with Gaddis and Roe but Barton has now decided to move on. Gaddis adds, "Jason really felt called to move on to other things so we totally respected that and wish him the best at whatever he does. In fact, we are still extremely close to Jason--we're neighbors." <><
MARGARET BECKER has received the prestigious "Lumiere du Monde" ("Light of the World") award from the European Convocation of Episcopal Churches. The title of the award comes from Matthew 5:14 when Jesus said to His followers, "You are the light of the world." The "Lumiere du Monde" stemed from a fellowship of Christians eager to impact the world outside of their churches after the group studied Bob Briner's book, "Roaring Lambs" and began challenging each other to be "lambs in the midst of wolves." The late author Briner, who was a self-confessed fan of Becker, wrote, "this extraordinary woman is must see, must hear, and a must read. Anyone who does not know her yet, ought to." <><
STACIE ORRICO will perform as part of both the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City and the traditional Christmas Tree Lighting in Rockefeller Center. The 77th. Annual Macy's Parade will be broadcast live starting at 8:00 AM CST on Thanksgiving Day on NBC-TV hosted by "The Today Show's" Katie Couric, Matt Lauer, and Al Roker. Orrico will return to New York on December 3rd. to perform during the 71st. Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center, one of NYC's longest running Christmas traditions. The star-studded event will also be broadcast live on NBC.
The teen sensation's sophomore project, the self-titled "Stacie Orrico," has sold almost 1½ million units around the world and has reached Gold status in Japan, Korea, and the United Kingdom. <><
SOUNDBYTES: REBECCA ST. JAMES' "Let My Words Be Few Tour" this fall is being recorded for an upcoming live EP album set to be released in early 2004. The project will include St. James' favorite worship songs recorded live at many of her sold-out concerts. <>< The wedding is still on in December for JEREMY CAMP and fiancé ADRIENNE LIESCHING of THE BENJAMIN GATE. The couple will not enjoy a long honeymoon, though, as Camp hits the road with NEWSBOYS and REBECCA ST. JAMES in February to promote his new album entitled "Carried Me: The Worship Project", which will be on store shelves February 10th. <>< A memorial for JOHNNY CASH is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 12th. at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium with the event free and open to the public. The legendary singer and devout Christian passed away in September from complications with diabetes. His devoted wife of 35 years, June Carter Cash, also died this year on May 15th. <>< Congratulations to Mark Lee of THIRD DAY and wife Stephanie on the birth of their first child, daughter Abigail Madden Lee, on October 28th. Abigail weighed in at 9 lbs., 2 ounces and mom and baby are reportedly doing just fine! <>< MERCYME's album "Spoken For" has now been certified Gold by the RIAA with sales of over 500,000 copies. The project has remained in the Top 20 for 57 weeks and is currently at #9 nationally on Radio & Records Magazine's Contemporary Christian Music chart. <><
