IN THE NEWS: 

The Media Research Center has some new statistics that shows television news coverage of religious issues has risen sharply in the last decade.  A recent survey of the evening newscasts of the three major TV networks’ (ABC, CBS, and NBC) during the last 12 months noted 303 stories on religion, compared with 121 stories during a one-year period in 1993.  The media watchdog group also say that coverage centering on spirituality increased on the networks’ morning news shows, newsmagazines, and Sunday morning interview shows from 197 in 1993 to 331 stories last year.  And just in the last few weeks, the huge success of Mel Gibson’s film “The Passion of the Christ'' has stimulated an outbreak of religious-oriented programming from the TV networks' news and entertainment divisions.  Last weekend CBS reran “Jesus,” a made-for-TV movie that originally aired four years ago; Sunday night ABC showed for the 24th time since 1973 the 1956 epic “The Ten Commandments''; and ABC (again) devoted three hours of prime time programming Monday evening to a report from news anchor Peter Jennings on Jesus Christ and his disciple, Paul. <><

THIRD DAY is set to release their seventh studio album on May 4th.  “Wire” will return the band to their rock roots with the talents of producer Paul Ebersold, who has produced projects for such mainstream artists as Sister Hazel, 3 Doors Down, and Pseudopod, as well as Christian artists including BIG TENT REVIVAL and SKILLET.  Also Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Aerosmith, Lifehouse, King’s X) mixed the tracks for the band’s latest release.  The Grammy and Dove Award-winning band will kick off their 85-date "Third Day Live" tour with guest TOBYMAC and opening act WARREN BARFIELD this Wednesday (April 7th) in Jackson, Tennessee. <>< 

JILL PAQUETTE, who released her self-titled, debut album in the United States last year, has won the 2004 Juno Award for best Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album in Canada.  The award was handed out this weekend in Edmonton, Alberta at the Junos, which is the Canadian equivalent of the U.S.’ Grammy Awards.  Paquette has also been nominated for two Dove Awards this year at the 31st annual Gospel Music Association gala on April 28th in Nashville. <><
