IN THE NEWS:
Modern Worship artists DAVID CROWDER BAND kicked off Gospel Music Week in Nashville with a live interview on CNN’s Sunday Morning program. Frontman and leader David Crowder was interviewed from Nashville via satellite by Catherine Callaway at CNN H.Q. in Atlanta. At one point in the interview, Callaway remarked, "It is just amazing the wave of popularity that your music is receiving," and asked Crowder if he considered himself a “rock star?” "I've got a really good pal that says (the David Crowder Band) are more like a moon than a star,'" replied Crowder. "Because the moon, if it wasn't for the sunshine, is just a ball of dirt. For us, the light of Christ, when it shines on us, it's just a beautiful collision. We are more interested in attracting attention to God than ourselves," he added.
Recently David Crowder Band was also featured in a New York Times cover story when the band appeared at the Passion Experience Tour in New York City April 15th. NY Times writer John Leland attended the gathering and wrote the story "Christian Music's New Wave" that ran in the paper on April 17th. (read the full story at www.nytimes.com). When not performing more than 200 concerts a year, the band leads worship on Sundays at University Baptist Church which David Crowder helped found. <><
Michael Tait who now fronts his own band, TAIT, will tour Europe this summer as a back-up vocalist with legendary rock guitarist Carlos Santana. The co-founder of the Grammy award-winning group DCTALK will make his debut on stage with Santana in France on July 2nd. The European tour will hit venues in Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Croatia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. Also Michael will sing back-up on a new Carlos Santana studio album to be released later this year and a U.S. tour being planned for Spring 2005.
Tait says he is still “100% committed” to his own band and will continue to record and perform with Chad Chapin, Lonnie Chapin, and Justin York. “Carlos has been so gracious; he has even asked me to perform two TAIT songs in the live show," Michael commented. Tait’s former band, dcTalk, has career sales of seven million albums with 1995’s Jesus Freak going Double-Platinum (2 million units sold.) Carlos Santana’s music career has now spanned five decades and the artist has sold more than fifty million albums, performed before more than thirty million fans, and won nine Grammy Awards. <><
Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie appeared recently on MTV with members of Atlanta-based Christian rock band THIRD DAY to encourage young people to get out and vote on Election Day. According to RNC Chairman Gillespie, “We’re extremely pleased that popular bands like Third Day are using their influence in a positive way by encouraging young people to get involved in our electoral process.” Gillespie and Third Day appeared on MTV live from George Washington University at a press conference centering on the importance of voting. <><
DID YOU KNOW?: CASTING CROWNS, who has been nominated for five Dove Awards at Wednesday night’s festivities in Nashville, formed four years ago during lead singer Mark Hall's residency as a youth pastor in Daytona Beach, Florida. The band’s unique sound was sharpened while they led worship for their church’s Wednesday night youth group service. Hall and other band members later relocated to Atlanta in a similar music ministry position. It was at this church where they were “discovered” by Mark Miller, the former frontman for popular 80’s Country band Sawyer Brown, who signed them as the first act on his and STEVEN CURTIS CHAPMAN’s new record label. <><
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO…?: Remember PAIGE, the teen CCM sensation that hit the top of the charts last year with “Cry Holy?” After being dropped by her Christian label, she is now a regular performer in the Los Angeles club scene and has opened for several alt/rock bands including Vertical Horizon. Paige (real name Paige Lewis) also had a song featured in the recent Nicolas Cage comedy/crime-caper film Matchstick Men. <><
SOUNDBYTES:
Two new Christian music television channels are slated to hit the air before the end of 2004. The Gospel Music Channel will feature music videos in the daylight hours and concerts and biographical sketches in prime time. Also the MP Network (“Music & Praise”) will concentrate on an 18-to-34-year-old audience with CCM and Christian hip-hop videos. <>< Worship leader/artist TERRY MACALMON has released a new live worship album. The Sound of Heaven was recorded at the Pikes Peak Worship Festival hosted by MacAlmon and during his weekly "Lunch with the Lord" worship gatherings. Before signing with INO Records, the singer/songwriter/pianist who lives in Colorado Springs sold almost 500,000 CDs from his home without a recording contract. <>< SWITCHFOOT frontman Jon Foreman has been nominated in the Songwriter of the Year category at the 2004 GMA Dove Awards for his band’s crossover hit, “Meant To Live.” Switchfoot is also nominated for Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for “Meant To Live” from their platinum-selling CD The Beautiful Letdown. <><
