IN THE NEWS:

At least 1,000 people attended last weekend’s contemporary Christian music concert at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  The festivities took place only a few hundred yards from the former site of the “Snake Pit”, where drunken and scantily clad fans used to attend concerts with secular bands each May.  AUDIO ADRENALINE, BUILDING 429, and JEREMY CAMP blasted their music right along with the roar of Indy cars qualifying and practicing for the upcoming 500-mile race. <><

The Trinity Broadcasting Network’s Matthew Crouch has teamed up with Johnny Wright of Wright Entertainment Group to develop a talent showcase for the network that features 18-24 year-old solo artists.  Wright, who has managed the careers of many of today’s top mainstream artists including *NSYNC, Justin Timberlake, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, BoyzIIMen, and P.Diddy, will be the co-executive producer of this talent search that will allow young singers to showcase their talents through both gospel and contemporary Christian songs.  Auditions for the televised talent show will begin in July in 12 cities across the nation.  Twenty-four finalists will then be flown to Orlando in September for the first program to be aired on TBN. <><

WireTap Magazine recently ran an interesting article about crossover Christian bands that attempt to straddle the secular and religious markets.  The piece featured several CCM artists that have crossed over into mainstream entertainment including P.O.D., CHEVELLE, LIFEHOUSE, SWITCHFOOT, and BIG DISMAL.  The magazine article also went on to mention Justin Timberlake, Prince, Beyoncé, Lauren Hill, and Outkast, secular artists who “profess” they are Christians but don’t always portray their faith in their record releases. <><  

New alternative rock-worship band SOMETHING LIKE SILAS recently returned from Malawi, South Africa after performing for over 100,000 people during soccer game half-times in stadiums in Lilongwe, Mzuzu, Zomba, Chichiri, and at the University of Malawi.  The band was part of a mission trip from their church that they helped found four years ago in San Diego.  Something Like Silas still leads worship almost every Sunday for almost 3,000 worshippers at the emerging church called “Flood.” <><

CCM rock band KUTLESS has been invited to perform three concerts at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient games and site of the first modern Olympics in 1896.  The band will play in Omonia Square, at the base of the Acropolis in the shadow of Mars Hill (called "Monastiraki"), and also at Koropi. <><

SOUNDBYTES:

The television broadcast of the Gospel Music Association’s 35th. Music Awards (formerly the Dove Awards) has been postponed.  The taped broadcast was set to air on the UPN TV network Friday, May 28th. but will be moved to a later date. <>< MARGARET BECKER has partnered with World Vision to launch the Orange Fund, a new non-profit venture that will quickly bring desperately needed HIV/AIDS resources to African nations to help combat the increasing AIDS crises. <>< SKILLET is re-releasing Collide on mainstream record label Lava Records this Tuesday (May 25th.)  The new “enhanced” CD will also feature live footage, photos, interviews with band members, and a new track, "Open Wounds." <>< AVALON’s Janna and Greg Long are proud new parents of Lillian Flowers Long who weighed in at 7 lbs., 4 oz. when she arrived last Monday (May 17th.)  You can view a video of the newborn baby at http://www.greglong.com/index800.php.<>< MERCYME was recently featured on the cover of Billboard Magazine.  The record and radio industry publication ran an article that talked about the band’s rise to the top of the mainstream charts with "I Can Only Imagine" and their recent sweep of this year’s Dove Awards. <><  NATE SALLIE, whose current radio hit is "Whatever It Takes", has been selected to be part of Post Cereal's “Summer Jam 2004” national promotion.  The campaign runs all summer on several nationally-ranked kids online websites with Post expecting 2.5 million hits.  For more info, go to http://www.postopia.com. <>< Prayers go out for new CCM artist/songwriter WARREN BARFIELD’s sister, Rena, who was recently in a serious auto accident.  A passenger in the car was killed and Rena was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries. <><

Actual entries found in patient’s hospital charts--

--Patient says she has chest pain if she lies on her left side for over a year.

--On the second day the knee was better, and on the third day it disappeared.

--The patient has been depressed since she began seeing me in 1993.

--Healthy-appearing decrepit 69 year old male; mentally alert but forgetful.

--The patient refused autopsy.

--Patient's medical history has been remarkably insignificant with only a 40 pound weight gain in the past three days.

--Patient had waffles for breakfast and anorexia for lunch.

--She is numb from her toes down.

--The skin was moist and dry.

--Occasional, constant, infrequent headaches.

--Patient was alert and unresponsive.

--Skin: somewhat pale but present.

--Patient has two teenage children, but no other abnormalities.
