IN THE NEWS:

SWITCHFOOT has been chosen to be a “major presence” in MTV’s 2004 Rock The Vote campaign.  Their Christian and mainstream radio hit “Dare You To Move” has been chosen as the theme song for the campaign that will encourage young people to register to vote in this year’s presidential election.  Also the San Diego band’s single “Meant To Live” is featured on the just-released Spider-Man 2 soundtrack and the film’s trailer. <><

Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie is appearing on MTV with members of Atlanta-based Christian rock band THIRD DAY to encourage young people to get out and vote on Election Day.  According to RNC Chairman Gillespie, “We’re extremely pleased that popular bands like Third Day are using their influence in a positive way by encouraging young people to get involved in our electoral process.” <><

CASTING CROWNS has signed up for a 70-city tour fall tour with STEVEN CURTIS CHAPMAN.  The tour will also feature CHRIS TOMLIN and is set to kick off nationwide on October 21st.  Casting Crowns formed four years ago during lead singer Mark Hall's residency as a youth pastor in Daytona Beach, Florida.  The band’s unique sound was sharpened while they led worship for their church’s Wednesday night youth group service.  Hall and other band members later relocated to Atlanta in a similar music ministry position.  It was at this Atlanta church where they were “discovered” by Mark Miller, the former frontman for the popular 80’s Country band Sawyer Brown.  Miller quickly signed them as the first act on his and Chapman’s new record label. <><

Two new Christian music television channels that are set to hit the airwaves this year are in the process of hiring key personnel.  The Gospel Music Channel will feature music videos in the daylight hours and concerts and biographical sketches in prime time.  The MP Network (“Music & Praise”) will concentrate on an 18-to-34-year-old audience with CCM and Christian hip-hop videos. <><

The U-Tour is planning concerts at the Southeastern Conference’s twelve universities this fall with a kick-off concert at the University of Georgia.  The first concert is set for October 19th. with artists DOWNHERE, TREE 63, and APOLOGETIX.  The goal of tour promoters is to provide young people with alternatives to suicide and to educate others in how to recognize a person at risk.  According to recent studies, the second leading cause of death among college students is suicide, which kills more students than cancer, heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, pneumonia, influenza, strokes, and AIDS combined.  Organizers envision bringing popular contemporary Christian artists and powerful speakers together to convey a message of hope to students on every major university campus in the country over the next seven years.  By teaming up with campus ministries, local churches, and campus health professionals, U-Tour wants to help college students understand depression and give them the tools to identify and assist others that may be struggling with suicidal thoughts.  For more information on the U-Tour, visit http://www.utour.org. <><
