In some good news this week, MERCYME wins AMA statue; this year’s best-selling new artist is…BARLOWGIRL; KUTLESS recording new Worship album; RELIENT K hits Top 20 on Mainstream chart; upcoming concerts in the Southwest; new album releases; Top 10 Signs You Know You Are Now Middle-Aged; and much more!
IN THE NEWS:
MERCYME won their first American Music Award Sunday night. Their award for “Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist” was presented before the actual telecast began, although the band did appear on camera during the three-hour special on ABC-TV to talk about how voting is tabulated (how exciting!) and presented the “Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist” award to Sheryl Crow. Host Jimmy Kimmel jokingly introduced MercyMe as “nice guys” and asked the audience at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles to “be nice to them.” Prior to the broadcast, band members conducted interviews with various media outlets including Good Morning America, TV Guide Channel, E! News Daily, CNN, and Reuters TV. <><
BARLOWGIRL is now the best selling new artist released in 2004. The Barlow sisters’ debut album, which was released on February 24th., has sold 100,000 units, earning it a spot in the Top 20 in overall Christian album sales this year, according to Soundscan. Rebecca, Alyssa, and Lauren Barlow also have the distinction of recording 2004’s longest running No.1 radio single (“Never Alone”) that remains at the top spot on the charts of Radio & Records and Christian Radio Weekly (“CHR” and “Rock” charts”.) Also BarlowGirl will be touring in spring 2005 with KUTLESS. <><
MICHAEL W. SMITH will guest star on an upcoming NBC-TV special with 1992 Olympic Gold Medalist Kristi Yamaguchi, four-time World Champion Kurt Browning, and two-time Olympic Silver medalist Brian Orser. The star-studded skating spectacular, Kristi Yamaguchi’s Salute to American Music, is in its fourth consecutive year on NBC. Also Art Garfunkel (of Simon & Garfunkel fame) and Kimberley Locke (American Idol finalist) will join the skaters as featured entertainers. <><
SOUNDBYTES:
The new Gospel Music Channel will premiere a live concert from THIRD DAY at 7:00 PM CST on November 23rd. The concert is part of the nation’s only 24-hour all-gospel television network’s original program, “Front Row Live.” <>< BIG DISMAL has broken up, with frontman Eric Durrance announcing he will continue as a solo act. <>< Big Idea Productions will release its 25th. VeggieTales project in March ’05. Duke and the Great Pie War is a “lesson in true love” based on the biblical story of Ruth and Naomi. <>< MERCYME’s Mike Scheuchzer joins frontman Bart Millard as a new father. Scheuchzer and his wife Abby recently welcomed their first child, Benjamin Michael. Fellow bandmate Millard and wife Shannon’s daughter, Gracie Ryan, was born on Nov. 4th. <>< KUTLESS is currently in Seattle, Washington recording a brand-new worship album with producer Aaron Sprinkle. The album, which releases in March ’05, will feature worship covers along with original songs written by the band. <>< RELIENT K’s fourth studio album, Mmhmm, has landed at No. 15 on Billboard Magazine’s Top 200 (Mainstream) Chart in its first week, selling nearly 52,000 units. The band’s previous release, Two Lefts Don't Make A Right... But Three Do, debuted at No. 38 on the same chart earlier this year.
