IN THE NEWS:
Rumors are spreading in the music industry that several major mainstream record labels are slowly resurrecting the backward masking controversy that surfaced in the 70’s and 80’s, hoping the subsequent backlash from evangelicals will help generate sagging sales.According to one anonymous record producer, "Everyone in the industry knows that ‘DMs’ (devil messages) are a quick and easy way to get a youth pastor to advertise a band…and you can take their outrage straight to the bank."
Jerold
Jameson, founder of the original "Youth Threat: Backward Masking Exposed" seminar, which made the rounds at evangelical churches several decades ago, recently revived "Youth Threat" after receiving an “unexpected gift” of $125,000 from an anonymous donor."Backward masking is still a danger to our youth,” Jameson told a crowd of over 1,300 during a recent two-day seminar at a mega-church in Missouri. As Jameson revealed hidden backward messages in current pop music, congregation members gasped with shock. But maybe we should gasp at Jameson’s alleged connection to Geffen Records, one of several major labels purportedly adding fuel to the backward masking controversy fire.Geffen only reports that it gives "to a wide variety of charities."
In the 1970s and '80s, when thousands of churches displayed offensive album covers and played snippets of “devil music” to their congregations, artists such as Led Zeppelin, Metallica and Megadeth reaped millions of dollars in free publicity.Again, as some major labels are hungry for more profits collected from teens, several artists are confirming their labels have pressured them to conceal backward Satanic and offensive messages in their music."Our label wanted us to do the 'natas' (‘Satan’ spelled backwards) thing," says the leader of an anonymous breakout band."We caved in and put some ‘DM’ stuff
under a guitar solo…hopefully our fans will forgive us."Industry insiders are saying these labels are also paying people to talk about backward masking on Christian chat rooms and blog sites. These insiders add that offensive CDs are even being mailed directly to churches, hoping their Youth pastors will preach against these. And to increase catalog sales of their older product, classic Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin albums are being re-released with fresh backward messages.According to a recent interview, Ozzy Osbourne said he was asked to record some new backward messages for his re-mastered 22-year-old reissue, “Bark at the Moon.”"I put in a few devil lines, but I felt silly about it," Osbourne said.
This “new” label strategy could be working…some churches have already sponsored record-burnings of Ozzy’s new CD (these bonfires are known as "jackpots" because of the publicity produced.)Also Jameson's "Youth Threat 2010" seminar is booked up through 2008.One pastor, whose church was a sponsor of the current seminar, says backward masking never went away…”It just went underground for a while." <><
The dates for the second “Friendship Fest” in Marrakech, Morocco have been set by Moroccan officials and a US-based non-profit group. This year’s “celebration of friendship and peace between Christian and Muslim cultures” will be held May 5-7 just outside the walls of the ancient city.Last year’s successful music festival captured the world’s attention, as American and Moroccan musicians shared center stage before an estimated 85,000 people over the three nights of the event.
The promoters for this unique event, Creation Festivals co-founders Harry Thomas and Tim Landis, promise a diverse lineup of contemporary Christian music, Southern Gospel and Hip-Hop artists including AUDIOADRENALINE, THE CRABB FAMILY, “American Idol” finalist GEORGE HUFF, JACI VELASQUEZ, KJ-52 and Canadians DOWNHERE.All artists will be donating their services and crew labor for the free Friendship Fest ’06, with production costs being offset by private US contributors and corporate sponsorships from Moroccan businesses. <><
After recent struggles with alcohol, a barroom brawl and an arrest just two weekends ago for public drunkenness, self-professed Christian and new solo artist SCOTTSTAPP faces another embarrassing incident. Now a risqué tape of Stapp and mainstream rock ‘n’ rapper Kid Rock has surfaced on the Internet, produced by the same company that distributed the infamous Paris Hilton tape. The California-based Red Light District Video has posted a trailer of the video on its Web site, which shows the two performers in explicit
sexual situations with four female concert fans (as of press time, the site had been removed.)In an “Us Weekly” magazine interview, Red Light District president David Joseph said the tape was shot in a motor home about six years ago while the two were touring together in Miami and was acquired from a “third party.”
With 30 million albums sold to date and eight no. 1 radio hits to his credit, CREED’s troubled frontman may finally lose the last of his Christian fans, as this sex tape story materializes. In one scene of the disgusting 20-minute video, Stapp tells the cameraman,
"It's good to be the king," which is likely to remind fans of the Creed song, "What's This Life For," where Stapp sings, “We all live under the reign; Of the one King-one King-one King!"I wonder if he was talking about Jesus Christ back then? <><

IN THE NEWS:
The battle with alcohol addiction continues for former CREED frontman and now solo artist SCOTTSTAPP.An intoxicated Stapp was arrested Saturday (Feb. 11th.) at Los Angeles International Airport for “being under the influence,” according to an Airport Police representative. The singer was just married last Friday in Miami to Jaclyn Nesheiwat, who is a former Miss New York and the director of public affairs for Stapp’s non-profit foundation.Last Thanksgiving day Stapp was involved in an drunken altercation with members of a mainstream alternative rock band at a hotel bar in Baltimore. In December the singer showed up intoxicated for a taping of a Spike TV Network program and made some on-air off-color remarks to a female host.
In an interview with CCM Magazine late last year after releasing his first solo album, “The Great Divide,” Stapp said he had stepped back into the arena of faith in Jesus Christ."When I was a kid, and even as a young adult, I
was always asking God to prove Himself to me," Stapp told CCM. "After seeing ‘The Passion of the Christ’ it was kind of like God saying to me, 'I'm here, what further proof do you need?' I finally got to that place where I looked up to God and said, 'You can have me; You can have everything I've got, if You'll just take me back.'"
Please remember to pray for Scott Stapp that God will bridge the “great divide” once again for this talented young man. <><

Lewis' tale of enchantment, epic battles and talking animals enjoyed the second-highest weekend gross ever for the month of December, behind only that of "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (debuting in 2003 at $72.6 million.)Many of Nashville’s Christian music artists supported the film at a special screening and live national radio broadcast, including REBECCA ST. Lewis’ children's story tells a Christian message. The newspaper ran an article last weekend reporting that a letter written by the famed author in 1961, addressed to a child fan, was recently uncovered.According to the literary adviser to the Lewis estate, Walter Hooper, the letter clearly states that "the whole Narnian story is about Christ."For many years Christians and secularists have been debating Lewis' message in the popular children's series with some churches citing allusions to the gospel and Jesus while others simply regarding “The Chronicles of Narnia” as just an adventure story. <><

Some disappointing news concerning self-professed

cable network’s show, "Casino Cinema," and insulted the program’s hosts and crew members.Stapp is a “Guest of the Week” and plays a few hands of 5-Card Stud Poker in the episode, which airs this Tuesday (Dec. 6th.) at 8:00 PM CST on SpikeTV. <><

LIGHTS...CAMERA…ACTION!
Although this story is not about a Christian music artist, it is about yours truly, who at least writes about these artists! This Sunday night (Oct. 30th) at 8:00 PM, CBS-TV will air “Vampire Bats,” a sequel to last spring’s very successful television movie, “Locusts.”Once again Lucy Lawless stars as Dr. Maddie Rierdon who this time hunts down vampire bats with the help of her students. In what CBS publicists call a “suspense thriller,” Lawless discovers that “a deadly species of vampire bats are responsible for a series of bizarre murders,” so her character must find a way to stop these little computer-generated flying creatures before they get
completely out of control.
For this telepic, I was called to work as a background actor (a fancy title for “movie extra”) down in New Orleans in a scene where I played a news photographer. To let you know where my big part is in the film - in case you blink you could miss me - the mayor (played by actor Timothy Bottoms) of the imaginary town of Mercier, Louisiana has called a press conference to let citizens know he is placing a dusk to dawn curfew on their fair city because of bat attacks. In my scene, “Mayor Poelker” is flanked by two Louisiana State Police officers who try to ease the fears of the townspeople.Look for me to the right of the mayor and the state trooper on the
mayor’s right (on the left side of the TV screen) holding a camera and taking photos.
In my acting “debut” in “Locusts,” I played a “farm hand” and could be seen running across the screen in a corn field - remember that big “blur” behind actor Dylan Neal? They say everyone has 15 seconds of fame, so maybe with this movie I’ll add another 2 or 3 seconds to my running total! <><

IN THE NEWS:
<>< One Christian rock band is doing what it does best in its efforts to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Seventh Day Slumber has cleared their touring schedule for the next couple of months to visit areas in the Southwest where hurricane evacuee camps and shelters have been set up. The Nashville-based four piece band is performing for free for the relocated Gulf Coast residents with the public admitted to the concerts for donations of food, water, relief supplies or cash contributions. One such area with hundreds of sites is in northeast Louisiana, where thousands of Katrina evacuees have lived in make-shift shelters and campgrounds since fleeing last month from the
path of the devastating storm.
In the midst of the flourishing cotton fields in the northeastern corner of the state, frontman and founder Joseph Rojas and his Dove Award-nominated band will visit several evacuee sites and also headline a benefit concert billed as, “Three Bands for Three Cans or Three Bucks.” Admission to the concert is three canned goods (or non-perishable food items) or $3.00, with all food and cash donations going directly to the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana for emergency food assistance for displaced hurricane evacuees in their area. Local contemporary Christian bands “Waiting For Isaac” and “Bliss” are opening acts for the concert that is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 10th, at First Assembly
of God Church, 715 Cypress Street, in West Monroe.
Also during their stopover in northern Louisiana, Rojas, bassist Joshua Schwartz, guitarist Jeremy Holderfield and drummer Ray Fryoux will visit several hundred Katrina evacuees, including about 80 mentally challenged adults from the New Orleans area, who are still camped out in a state park in Morehouse Parish. The band will treat these temporarily relocated families and individuals to a private concert, followed by a time of fellowship and prayer. For more information on the benefit concert, call 318-680-2609 or visit www.glory2gloryproductions.com. Also if you would like defray some of the costs of the Hurricane Relief Tour, mail checks to: Seventh Day Slumber, P.O. Box 1710, Topanga, CA 90290 or go to www.seventhdayslumber.com to make a donation by credit card.

Solo artist and 4HIM member MARK HARRIS is performing a free concert for Hurricane Katrina evacuees near his hometown on Wednesday (September 7th.) Over 250 displaced refugees are currently living in the Robertsdale, Alabama First Baptist Church and Harris says he wants to provide some encouragement and a reprieve from the tragic event.“It is a very sad situation for anyone who had coastal property on Mobile Bay, Dauphin Island, and anything further west,” according to Harris. “The wind damage was not that bad but the water damage was the worst it has ever been. I have lived here all my life and been through all
the major hurricanes, Camille, Frederick, Ivan, etc., but this is by far the worst because of the size and the overall scope of damage. Please keep us all in your prayers as we on the Gulf Coast clean up and pick up the pieces,” the singer added.
Harris, who lives in Mobile, is asking for donations for First Baptist Church of Robertsdale to help them continue to send trucks every day to damaged communities in the area, providing these storm victims with food and water. You can send checks to:First Baptist Church of Robertsdale, Attn: Katrina Relief Fund, 22703 Racine St., Robertsdale, AL 36567. <><

8. "I’ll be right back after I check your medical history in your records up front.” (I want to see if you've paid your last bill before I waste any more time on you.)
7. "We have some good news and some bad news." (The good news is, I’m going to buy that new BMW; the bad news is, you're going to pay for it.)
6. "This should fix you up." (The drug company slipped me some big bucks to prescribe this junk.)
5. "Let me schedule you for some tests." (I have a forty percent interest in the lab.)
4. "I'd like to prescribe you a new drug." (I'm writing a paper for The Journal of the American Medical Association and would like to use you as a guinea pig.)
3. "If it doesn't clear up in a week, give me a call." (I don't know what it is, so maybe it will go away by itself.)
2. "This may smart a little bit." (Last week two of my patients bit off their tongues when I stuck them with this “horse needle”.)
1. "Do you suppose stress in your life could be affecting your nerves?" (I know a shrink who'll split his fees with me.)

In some good news this week, LOU GRAMM of Foreigner to release Christian project; BART MILLARD of MercyMe releases special Dual Disc this Friday; CLAY CROSSE back with new record & book after three year hiatus; release date for new THIRD DAY studio album is set; artist birthdays; upcoming concerts in the Southwest; new album releases; 10 MORE Signs That It's Time To Go On A Diet; and much more!
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO...Remember the 70’s and 80’s FM radio hits "Urgent," "I Want to Know What Love Is" and "Waiting For A Girl Like You"?LOU GRAMM (born Lou Grammatico) was the lead singer and co-writer of these classic tunes recorded by platinum-selling rock band Foreigner. But these days the vocalist, who sung on over a dozen gold and platinum albums and nearly 20 hit singles, has
relinquished his Foreigner frontman duties to sing about Jesus.Gramm recorded nine songs for a new Christian album before embarking on a summer tour of Europe (Germany, the Netherlands), Canada and the United States with the Lou Gramm Band, and hopes to release his new project in September."I've been wanting to do this since I gave my life to Christ in the early '90s," says Gramm."When I went through rehab…for all of my illegal habits…although, I still buy too many cars."
Nearly thirty years after Foreigner ruled the airwaves with Top 10 singles such as “Feels Like The First Time” and “Cold As Ice,” Gramm is now almost 50 pounds heavier due to steroids taken in his personal battle against a life-threatening brain tumor.Although surgery and radiation treatment have eliminated the cancer, the physical impact on Gramm has been difficult – an occasional stammer in his speech, a second divorce and the constant wrestling over control of the band with it’s founder, Mick Jones, who owns the name."We've played so many places where we've pulled up to the club and it says ‘Foreigner’ on the marquee," says Gramm.
But when the Lou Gramm Band’s new album is released, the aging singer will shift from pop icon to Christian rocker.Gramm says his desire to be a Christian singer was re-awakened when he went through his operation in '97 and made a guest appearance on PETRA’s "We Need Jesus" later that year. But how will his old fans react when they come out to hear the lyrics, "I’m a dirty white boy…" and instead get, "the closer I move toward the light…"?"These are only images in the drama that is my life," Gramm says of the new songs."The closer you get to the Lord, the more you'll be tested by the Devil."
Of course, songs about lust ("Hot Blooded") and drugs ("Double Vision") don't get a lot of play on Christian radio stations. <><

We are now entering a new season of God’s blessing upon this ministry.HolyHomes, the ministry that Renee and I started out of our rededication to Christ in 1998, is gearing up for the numerous speaking engagements that God is sending our way," says Crosse. <><
