A few weeks ago, nearly two thousand sweating bodies jammed into the
sold-out Irving Plaza in New York City to witness a spectacle known as Gogol
Bordello. Fronted by the mad Ukrainian singer Eugene Hutz, who was
described by New Yorker magazine as the genetic product of Bertolt Brecht
and Sid Vicious, Gogol Bordello is a combination of reckless fervor,
foot-stomping rhythms, outlandish lyrics, and a circus of surreal stimuli,
brought to the masses by Hutz, a fiddler, a saxophonist, an accordionist, a
guitarist, a drummer, and two cabaret dancing girls. They are loud,
lunatic, and lascivious, and they will be shaking South Street to its very
core when they perform at Tritone on Friday, April 30. To hear, see, and
smell Gogol Bordello, visit their website, http://www.gogolbordello.com
Also appearing is Philadelphia's own Brothers Suggarillo, the amalgam of Pig
Iron Theatre Company's James Sugg, Victor Fiorillo, Joshua Ramey of the
Kandy Whales and a bassist known as LotSix. Named "Best Faux German
Cabaret" by the City Paper, the funk-tinged Brothers Suggarillo is what you
would get if Neil Diamond, Prince, Kurt Weill, and Angus Young all peed into
a cup and you drank it, with a shot of vodka and a splash of seltzer, of
course. Specials guests with the Brothers Suggarillo include Pig Iron's
Dito van Reigersberg and Plastron's Nicola Dixon.
"Gogol Bordello has become an underground phenomenon in New York with its
brand of contrarian globalism. Their sound is raucous, sweaty, tuneful and
recklessly vibrant, like the punk and Gypsy music that inspired them. Iggy
Pop meets Kafka." [New York Times]
"A Ukranian singer, Russian Fiddler, Israeli guitar player, Floridian
drummer, Russian accordionist and Israeli sax man walk into a bar. Then, if
it's Gogol Bordello, they tear the place to shreds." [Rolling Stone]
