I have the same Gitane DG-255 model and went through the same question. This is what I do and I highly recommend it for your consideration.
A Radio Shack clip-on electret mic (part #33-3013) goes for about $26. Nice flat response - the specs rival similar mics that sell for 4-5 times more. The mic has a 1/8" plug so you'll also need a shielded extension cord (#42-2560) that ends with a 1/4" plug. That's another $7. Go to a crafts store and buy a small clear suction cup that's used to affix things to windows. They're about 25 cents. Affix the suction cup directly on the upper bout out of harm's way. Clip the mic to the suction cup, aim it back toward the bridge and plug it in. It's that's simple. You'll be amazed.
I've used this setup with no preamp and minimum EQ, although a preamp wouldn't hurt. I've used the mic on several venues both indoors and outdoors and it works just fine. Our violinist (and a flutist friend) uses the exact same system - no problems.
Worst case scenario - you're out about $33.25, plus tax.
Best case scenario - well, you get the picture...
good luck,
Steve

Hi,
I purchased an entry-level guitar (Gitane DG-255) and am starting to get into this music. I've heard that Bigtone is the best regarded pickup for gypsy jazz guitars. My question is: are there less expensive pickups out there that still provide a decent quality sound? Putting a $300 (?) pickup in a $600 guitar isn't doesn't make sense to me at this point. But I'm interested in any ideas or recomendations.
Thanks,
Dan
