Tonight in San Diego (Thurs April 13) at the Neurosciences Institute,
the World Music Concert Series opens with K. Sridhar, a master of the
Indian Sarod. (see below for details)
Later in the series (Aug 5) master Hossein Omoumi plays a concert at
the same acoustically-superb Neurosciences auditorium.

The Indian Sarod is a descendent of the ancient Persian/Arab Robab.
Different than the Robab, the Sarod has a metal fretboard, which
gives it a sound like a mix of, if you can imagine, a Santur and a
Oud. It is fretless and so can play any Indian raga, Arab magham, or
Persian dastgah. "Sarood" is an old Persian word meaning song or
chorus.
When I first heard Krishnamurti Sridhar it was on an album
called "East Meets East". It featured music and musicians from the
Turkish, Arab, and Persian traditions. The playing was superb, as
well as the selection of material. All musicians showed
understanding of each other's traditions, which is the key criteria
for any "fusion" to work. Whether is be the Darbukkah (Arabic
percussion) accompanying the Sarod on raga Bhairavi, the violin
answering the Persian vocal on the classic "Bandar", or the lively
Sarod and Oud exchange on the Arabic standard "Bint-el-Shalabia", the
musicians integrated their collective souls to create one music.
When I later read that K. Sridhar is versed in both the Hindustani
and Carnatic music traditions - from the north and south of India
respectively - I was not surprised. One who could transcend his
native musical language and converse so effortlessly with his
neighbors, was bound to be able to combine to perfection the
centuries-old traditions passed down from his own mother and father.
As maestro H. Alizadeh said "learning about the music of our
neighbors is probably the best way to uncover the hidden intricacies
of our own". It is with great joy and anticipation that we look
forward to a rare San Diego performance by maestro K. Sridhar this
Thursday at the wonderful Neurosciences Institute Auditorium. The
talented Jyoti Prakash will provide tabla accompaniment. Students
only $15.

Thanks very much for the reply. I spoke to Dr. Omoumi. He recommended that I contact someone in the S.CA region in order to make this happen. He mentioned that he needed about 20 students in order to put a seminar in english. With anything I think that you have to build awareness, and unfortunately the first few times the attendance might be slim, but I think that we can build this class up through promotion and awareness. I can definately help in marketing, materials, and promotion. Let me know what i can do and how we can move this forward.
Thanks,

Dear Isaac,
First of all congratulations on your upcoming wedding :-)
Secondly I agree that it would be great
to present the material in English to reach young Iranian-Americans and non-Iranians.
At our insistence, Dr. Omoumi reluctantly agreed a few years ago at a seminar in San Diego to present in English. Although his English was more than fluent, it was difficult to achieve the same flow one has in one's mother tongue.
Some ideas: Perhaps it would be possible for some bilingual students to work with Dr. Omoumi on translating the material. Perhaps even an advanced student whose first language is English - with Dr. Omoumi's supervision - could present the material. Maybe before or after the Persian seminar, an English summary could be given. Or perhaps a written summary in English could be provided to participants.
Students on this list hopefully will give other/better ideas ...
You have raised an important point, that I think is in line with the stated
mission of Haft-Dastgah: "to teach classical Persian music throughout North America" (http://www.haftdastgah.org)

Dear Isaac,
First of all congratulations on your upcoming wedding :-)
Secondly I agree that it would be great to present the material in
English to reach young Iranian-Americans and non-Iranians.
At our insistence, Dr. Omoumi reluctantly agreed a few years ago at a
seminar in San Diego to present in English. Although his English was
more than fluent, it was difficult to achieve the same flow one has
in one's mother tongue.
Some ideas:
Perhaps it would be possible for some bilingual students to work with
Dr. Omoumi on translating the material. Perhaps even an advanced
student whose first language is English - with Dr. Omoumi's
supervision - could present the material. Maybe before or after the
Persian seminar, an English summary could be given. Or perhaps a
written summary in English could be provided to participants.
Students on this list hopefully will give other/better ideas ...
You have raised an important point, that I think is in line with the

Mohammad Reza Lotfi, a leading interpreter of traditional Persian
music, is a virtuoso of the tar and setar (long-necked lutes). He
and his son Omid will perform extended improvisations from the
classical Persian repertoire - music that is highly ornamental and
noted for it's poetic and spiritual qualities.
