Sources close to the situation say that the Barbershop bit from
the Anaheim International convention will be in Conan O'Brien's
monologue tonight. Check Hulu.com tomorrow if you miss it.

I just caught the bit, as some of you probably did. Conan seemed
to believe it was only a quartet competition. Showed a little
of OC Times and Vocal Spectrum and a couple others... There are
really no good singing and no mention at all of Dick Van Dyke...

He joked about guys wearing pitch pipes...

It was not terrible, but not sure it gave the society any
particularly positive PR either.

Of course, he has to dress up in a handlebar moustache and straw hat...

Things to consider:

-Conan spent his time at the convention Wednesday, the day of
quartets. No surprise there that choruses are not really mentioned.

-In terms of maybe mentioning Dick Van Dyke or anything like that,
that would have been cool, I guess. But what they went with were the
funniest sound bites they could get, no matter where they came from.

-Considering how tightly anything for TV has to be edited —
especially anything that makes it on the air on The Tonight Show
— I thought they got a rather good chunk in of OC Times singing.

-Conan's mission is not to provide PR. It is to make people
laugh. And he did. He made me laugh, and I'm on the inside, and
maybe even the butt of the jokes. I was laughing with the audience
because I chose to accept that he was making light of all the silly
things we barbershoppers do. For those who felt the audience was
laughing at barbershop, that's a choice you make personally. I
just don't feel that way.

I've received e-mails and text messages already about the clip from
non-barbershop friends of mine who saw the clip. Non-barbershop
people I've talked to enjoyed it as well as I did and didn't get
any negative feelings toward barbershop about it. I don't think
anybody needs to worry about that.

If you do, you're taking Conan seriously and that's not his mission at all.

It was actually pretty nice.

He tried to mock the event, but funny is his bit, as often as he misses the
mark.

Barbershop Chorus is not really a known word outside Barbershop.

Everyone knows what a Barbershop Quartet is. They have those striped suits
and sing high and loud, right?

It would have been really nice if the tag Conan sang was better mixed. But
then, it was a gag, and it could have been much worse.

What we have now, is an avenue to get a quartet on the show!

They have pitchmen for everything else, why not quality music?

Many times I have watched these late-night talk shows until they had some
sad group that really grated my ears.

It would be nice once in a while to have a quartet or chorus get on the
show. They could even do a skit or two!

Saturday Nite Live?

They have lady gag gag on soon I think! Why not a quality performer?

Just a thought,

Comin' out of my 5+ Year LURK MODE just to post The Tonight Show
Footage...then will jump back to the swamp I crawled out of.? ?

I apologize for the poor quality of the footage (I don't know how
to take footage off of my DVR so I set up my camera in front of
the TV so I could post it up for all my bbshop brothers and sisters
to enjoy.? Watch it fast.? You Tube has been getting pretty wiggy
lately about stuff...

Personally...I liked the segment.? I know that many bbshoppers
will panic and resort to their medications b/c we were the butt
of the jokes...but I?found it funny and?entertaining which I'm
positive?was the angle that Conan wanted to take.??I believe that
anyone who thought they were going to put the BHS into the spotlight
w/o smacking us around along the way may have been a tad naive...

Could be worse...it could have been Cheers Part 2...
