It's very interesting that you mentioned that, Grant.

About seven years ago, when I was Music & Performance VP of my little
chapter, we did just that. The principle that guided me was that a
barbershop chapter & chorus will be more successful if they choose a
repertoire within their capabilities & then master those songs to the
point where they can perform them with musical & presentational
artistry.

Because our chapter had evolved to the point where we were made up
mostly of older men & newcomers, I felt the arrangements in the
Heritage of Harmony Songbook were ideal for this purpose--mostly
square barbershop, with enough meat on them (intro, verse, chorus--
sometimes more than one chorus--tag, which is not the case with most
of the Barber Polecat songs) to stand on their own in a
show/performance package.

At first our chapter Board & members bought into the idea. Because
our treasury was limited, we bought enough books to qualify for a
bulk discount (giving us enough for our members & a sufficient number
in inventory for projected new members & loaners to guests) & offered
members the option of buying their copy from the chapter or borrowing
a copy each week, with the understanding that that copy would remain
the chapter's property. Almost all members bought their copies from
the chapter.

Our director even purchased the Studio One set of learning CDs, which
we made use of, but I won't give you specifics.

After a couple of years, though, we sensed a great dissatisfaction
among our members with the continued use of material from the
Heritage of Harmony Songbook as our chapter repertoire. The guys
were becoming bored with the songs. I don't attribute this to any
shortcoming in the arrangements, but rather in our director's methods
of leading song rehearsals & introducing new songs. In any event,
members started to fall into old, slopping singing habits, criticized
the music team's choice of repertoire songs from the songbooks, &
became less attentive at meetings. Attendance also began to drop off.

Despite all the negative results, I still believe the Heritage of
Harmony Songbook is an excellent basic, ready-to-use chorus or
quartet repertoire, & at the price ($20?) is one of the best bargains
the Society has to offer.

Val Hicks and "Heritage of Harmony Songbook"
Food for thought here:

My friend Grant Carson wrote:

Then an 'answer' from Joseph Schlesinger:

>It's very interesting that you mentioned that, Grant.

----- snip -----

Eventually, of course, (as was mentioned later in JS note), if that is the
only music you use *exclusively* for more than three or four years
the membership will become bored with the lack of 'new' interest.

That being said, the Harmony Heritage songs, as Grant opined, are
*easy* enough too learn to sing (properly) and to form the basis of
GREAT BBShop habits. Learning to sing these charts **well** will
allow your Music Team to introduce more difficult songs as the
improvement in the overall *sound* of your group m erits.

As a Chapter Counselor, I see Chapter after Chapter with a music
library chosen by the Director because he likes the arrangement --
as done by VM, MoH, etc.. That's FINE if you happen to have the
horses to pull that wagon - but ...........

I have offered to several such Chapters planning a show to make
the investment in more simplified ARRs for their song selections.
This would make them easier to learn, easier to sing, and greatly
improve their own self-esteem -- not to mention to appreciation
of your audience. It might even lead to greater participartion of
these smaller Chapters to get back into the Divisionals -- singing
good music -- and doing it well!

I know of one Chapter of less than 20 active members that has a
repetoire that includes 'borrowed' charts of songs done by the
above-mentioned VM/MoH (and others) and the sound is some-
what less than *C level*. On the other hand, songs they *LOVE* to
sing, like "Bad Buncha' Boys" and "Darkness on the Delta" come
off MUCH better and the audience appreciates it - almost as
much as I do!

----- snip to JS again -----

> Despite all the negative results, I still believe the Heritage of
Harmony Songbook is an excellent basic, ready-to-use chorus or
quartet repertoire, & at the price ($20?) is one of the best bargains
the Society has to offer.

----------

BTW - my offer to write more simplified charts of songs for
show themes is good for any Chapter that wants to contact
me. I'll guanatee the price will be right!

I miss the good ol' days of Steve Tremper's plain-text scores.
As everyone knows, you can go to the http://www.spebsqsa.org
main page to get a nice PDF file of the complete score sheets.
Personally, however, I think it's still nice to see a summary via email.

To this end, I've been writing a Perl program to extract the
info out of the PDF file, and print a quick summary. It seems
to be working now for the quartet quarter-finals, but I'm sure
I'll have to tweak it to get it to work for the semis and finals
(with more sub-totals).

When I look at score sheets, the main things I care about is rank,
total score as a percentage of points possible, and the quartet
name. (I also am sometimes curious as to what songs were sung.)

So here is my extracted summary of the quartet quarter-finals
yesterday:

Hi,

Here's the deal...

The Bolton Landing Barbershop Quartet Festival has a big problem that needs
addressing RIGHT NOW if it's going to be able to take place this year!

WE NEED $15,000 IN FRONT MONEY THAT WE DON"T HAVE!!!! Deposits are coming
due, airfares need to be paid, etc! No $15,000 .... NO FESTIVAL! It's that
simple!

Now, if somebody wants to donate $15,000... GREAT! ...but not practical....

BUT... if I can get $100 from 150 people.... THAT"S PRACTICLE!

So if you've been to the festival, you know what it's worth to a lot of
people! Is it worth a $100 tax deductible donation (to the Bolton Landing
Chapter) to see this thing continue???

I'm in Louisville this week talking to everybody I can to raise the cash!
Somebody suggested we were going about it wrong... we didn't need $15K... we
needed $1000 from 150 people! ... so here I am!

Send me a note if you want to make a donation, and then mail it to Bolton
Festival Fund, PO Box 60, Clifton Park, NY 12065.

This has been an all-consuming passion for 10 years of my life, and I'm NOT
going to let it go down wihout a fight!

Can I just say I am having a GREAT week? Being the sister of the
baritone of Gotcha! does not suck.

I'm getting to meet all kinds of new people, and Allen (my boyfriend)
is learning some great new tags. I mean seriously, when you're new
to barbershop and nervous about singing, you want David Harrington,
Bob Hodges, and Hi Fidelity to teach you tags. It's way cool.
Thanks, guys! It was also cool to introduce him to the Wrights at
dinner last night, because he's only heard Ambiance's version
of "Rhapsody in Blue" about 200 times.

So now I can't sleep, and I was thinking about the fact that we went
to Churchill Downs yesterday. While there, I re-met Beatnick Mike.
(I met him years ago, but it didn't really stick for either one of
us.) So I couldn't sleep, and I was thinking that meeting Mike
should inspire me to write a haiku. So here it is:

So you're Beatnick Mike
The guy who writes the haikus
You can't pick a horse

So there you have it. If you are not the kind of person who likes to
read posts from star-stricken insomniacs, I hope you hit "delete" a
long time ago. Otherwise, thank you and goodnight.

Hi All ...

It's your roving Harmonet competitor again ... had a chance to go
to the AIC Show last night and take in some terrific and beautiful
moments in Barbershop history... Lots of tears on my part. I know
... I know ... It's only a hobby ... blah, blah, blah ... However,
seeing some of my AIC brother quartets call it quits and knowing
all the things that they've gone through together... well ... all
I can say is that every group that was retiring went out in CLASS.
I LOVE THOSE GUYS!

The Ritz is a group that we must ALL thank for their tireless
efforts to promote our gig. Who knows how many young men they
have touched with their work in MENC. Their presentation, a
retrospective of the Ritz, was first class and reminded me of how
much I respect those guys. Thanks, DJ, Ben, Jim, and Nic ... you
guys are tops in my book.

Michigan Jake also announced their FINAL show. Say it isn't so!
Mark Hale shared his love for our gig and it was a very emotional
moment. Thanks, Jake for your innovative style, for reintroducing
us to SWING, for letting us know that you can be yourselves and
make a hit, and most importantly, for sharing your genuine love
for our style. Your Barbershop life as a quartet was much too
short ... I'll miss ya! Anyone that was there will surely know
that Mark Hale is one of our stars and a true giver to the style!
BTW ... Jake did announce that they are releasing a final CD of
their works. Haven't heard it yet, but I know it will be a must
in your collection.

How fitting was it that Bill was able to announce the swan song
of Revival in Louisville? What a tremendous barbershopper and
wonderful guy. I can tell ya stories about singing the "top
ten records" with Bill and Dave LaBar and Tommy Gentry ... just
going down every quartet in the 60's and 70's. Long live the
Citations ... but I digress ... Revival is a throwback to those
guys ... not in singing style, but in the way they relate to
every Barbershopper. Mike, Mike, Royce and Bill came and sang at
my Mom and Dad's 50th Wedding anniversary. It meant more to me
than I could ever say. They are class guys who have always shown
us what the love of Barbershop is all about. Thanks Revival,
for showing us that there was more to being a champ than just
singing well (which you did in fine fashion). Thanks for sharing
your love of our hobby and being such wonderful friends, not only
to me ... but to every Barbershopper you came in contact with.
That is your legacy and one of which you can be proud.

Finally ... When you say "ALL TIME GREATS" we have to add a new
group to the top of the list. In Baseball, we would say that
they would make the Hall Of Fame unanimously on the first ballot!
Very fitting analogy for the Gas House Gang ... no??? I know that
I don't need to go on about these guys because all of you out there
feel the same way. They are the top of the top... guys who combined
incredible talent, tremendous showmanship, and a humbleness that is
rarely seen in this world for guys of such stature. Kidded about
being short, the Gas House Gang stands tall in our gig as being one
of the best EVER! The AIC wisely took intermission after the Gas
House Gang finished their final AIC performance... thank goodness
... we all needed it to recover, to reflect, and to pause while we
shared in the love the guys had for each other, for their music,
and for the brotherhood that brought them together. We also shared
in the pain of their loss. They had ALL the Baritones who filled in
for Rob sing with them. They had their original Tenor, Joe Fink,
come out to be recognized ... CLASS!

Then ... in perhaps the most magical moment I've ever experienced,
the Gas House Gang, through the magic of technology, sang one
last time with Rob. "I Still Can't Say Goodbye" represents how
we all feel about four friends, four beautiful people who gave
us all so many memories and so much love. Thanks Jimmy, Kipp,
Rich and Rob ... you are simply ... THE BEST!

Sometimes events that take place in our "hobby" transcend
Barbershop. They transcend the convention or some musical art
form. Last night, at the AIC show, those of us that were there
experienced just such a time ... a time when the magic of the
moment will live on forever in our hearts. With the AIC Chorus
pouring their hearts out with "I'll Never Pass This Way Again",
the tears began to flow again. I caused me to reflect again how
much the friendships mean to me. Thanks, AIC ... I LOVE YOU GUYS.

Cheers,
Bobby

Okay, I got a lot of email replies from people who think that
posting text files of score sheets is still useful!

Today I totally rewrote my Perl program to decipher the weird
text resulting from copying and pasting from a pdf file. Now the
program should satisfy both email receivers and web surfers.

First, it prints a concise summary of only the rank, score, and
quartet name. This should look good even on the Yahoogroups web
page or with variable-width fonts, and is nice for a quick overview
of the contest.

Then I print out the info AGAIN, only this time I include ALL
the info for each song by each quartet. I adopted Tina Gunther's
formatting for the latter, since it was easier to read than mine
(and closer to the original score sheet).

So, this is all automated now, although only for single scores.
In my rewrite, though, I made it more robust, so it should be
easier to upgrade to work with semifinals and finals scores.
I also hope to use this for district contests, and will probably
try to add an option for chorus contests.

Enjoy,

I ran my new program on the college scores, for those interested
in the plain-text format; see below.

(This one presented new challenges, as all three scores for each
song were munged together, like "169167165" instead of "169 167 165"!
Threw me for a loop...good thing I rewrote the code to make it
easier to adjust for things like this.)

Subject: [bbshop] Looking for some new CD's!

Hello all!

I'm in the market for a few new good barbershop CDs. It just so
happens that tomorrow is my 21st birthday, and I've been given a bit
of extra spending money as early gifts, so I need something to spend
it on. Being that I am a barbershop enthusiast, and will
unfortunately be missing the international convention this year, I
was hoping to get some advice from some of you all here on the
Harmonet as to which albums I might look into.

As far as what I'm looking for and what I have already, here's a
brief list that might help ya out:

I'd like some albums that have good recording quality, are at least
half full of barbershop and barbershop-style pieces (but I don't
mind hearing some variety), have at least a few uptunes, and that
you personally would recommend. I don't have a lot of chorus CDs,
so if you know of any in particular that are outstanding (sometimes
the recording quality is just not as good as I would like, but I
understand the difficulty in recording a whole chorus...I'd rather
hear 'em live anyways). Some good college groups would also be
really cool (since I'm college aged myself, and enjoy hearing what
the competition sounds like hehe).

Here's a short list of what I already have and listen to all the
time - and hence would recommend to you if you're in the market
yourself :)... (If I dont list CD titles, it means I probably have
all the CDs)

chorus:
   MoH - California Gold Rush
   Big Apple Chorus
   VM - Music Never Ends
   TNL

qtet:
   Acoustix
   Autograph
   Barbershop Favorites
   BGSU - 3 disc set
   BSQ - Melody Lingers On
   Four Voices
   FRED
   Gas House Gang
Michigan Jake - For The Record
   Platinum
Power Play - Love At Home
   Reveille
   Revival - Revival
The New Tradition - 2 disc set

I also have the top-20 quartets of 91, 92, 95, 01, 02, 03. I also
have the top-20 choruses of 01, 02, 03.

So...yeah, that's about 35 hours of barbershop...but why not have
more? If there's any essentials out there that you can think of,
please reply!

I'm already planning on getting the Max Q album, which someone
suggested and looks fantastic. I'm open to any other ideas!

Thanks in advance!
Jamie R. Bedford

Jamie, You've definitely made some good choices to this point.

The MAX Q cd is, as Tony's former lead, Joe Connelly, might say,
AWSOME!!

Michigan Jake's first cd was so good I would buy, and plan to,
their second sight unseen or heard as it were. You can't go wrong
by purchasing more GHG. All 5 of theirs are fabulous.

I have more than 100 quartet cds in my collection. Like you I
prefer them to chorus. Among my favorites is a single cd with
twice as many tracks on it as the usual by a group called Special
Feature that was top 10 at Int at least once. When they decided
to transfer both of their recordings to cd they created this great
album they then called DOUBLE FEATURE. When I purchased it the
price was $19. Not bad for a recording with nearly twice the cuts
on a normal cd. Seek this one out if still available. I'm not
sure where to tell you to look but maybe Ray Davis, Harmonetter,
will chime in here and help you out. He was their tenor a while.
For ringing chords on the cd you can't beat this recording. As I've
said often, Special Feature can take a "regular" barbershop song and
make it sound special with their RING. Both Ray and PaulO, tenor,
will be competing in quartets this week. Not sure about the others.

You're on the right track. Somebody's obviously given you some
guidance already.

Happiness is... a barbershop quartet!

Jamie:
If you don't have BOTH Four Voices CD's, they are a must buy. I'd
also like to put in a pitch for anything and everything by The Gas
House Gang. (You can order from their web-site.) I also play
Marquis's first disc a lot. Can't think of the name, but it's the
one with "Rock-a-bye" on it.

I'd also like to suggest branching out and getting a few women's
quartets. All three Rumors CDs are great, but their second
disc, "Rumors are Flying" is a must have. Also, anything by
Ambiance, but especially "Ain't Misbehavin'." Anything by Panache
is also worth having. You might also enjoy
Unplugged "Electrified." They haven't won international yet, but
they're well on their way, and the disc is awesome...nominated for
two CARA's last year.

Happy shopping!!!

I haven't seen in your list nor in the replies to the Harmonet any
CDs from the champ quartet Keepsake. I'd highly recommend any of
them, but my favorite is "The Entertainer," followed closely
by "Without A Song." Someone else mentioned the ladies' quartet
Ambiance; they have a CD called "I Hear a Rhapsody," which has a
David Wright knock-your-socks-off vocal arrangement of
Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" that is not to be missed. All the
other stuff on that CD is excellent, as well.

You have a great start with your collection so far. Good luck in
your hearing and singing barbershop.

It took some considerable more hacking to my Perl program to
account for two sections of a score sheet, and the "Subt Prev" in
the first half but not the second, but here at last is, I think,
an accurate extraction of the text from the score sheet for the
11th-20th place quartets.

OK Steve, I'll bite. Granted, I did not see the whole first round
and missed the Rounders in the semis, but.............IMHO:

Wheelhouse..............left the door open for someone else (
and I hate to say this as they are friends of mine). Loved their
presentation but the lead sound was pushed ( if one can trust
what we are hearing over the net).

Realtime....................a surprise for me, had not heard them
and loved them. Glad they made it to the bigtime

Riptide........................had it all...............presentation,
emotion, sound, lock and ring...........put it all out there

Max Q.......................unfortunately, when a quartet comes in
and expectations are so high one is bound to be disappointed. This
was the first I had heard them as missed them in the first round. I
was not wowed........and the audience response was mediocre (maybe
secondary to expectation).

Gotcha......................most emotion, but fearful that they were
going to lose the sound, which did happen in places. Definitely
not a careful performance, but I was worried the whole time which
made me left brain the performance........yet I still think that
they won this round.

Metropolis.............love to see them perform, and again,
not knowing how true the web sound is...........but........sorry
guys...........I don't know that I would have had them in the 10

Saturday Evening Post....................better in the first round I
think, overall better than last year. Sounded like they are trying
too hard. I love this lead's stage presence, but he is a lounge
singer by my ear. I lost the blend too much last night. Boy, and
I do love their blues sets.........no one does the backbeat better.

Flipside.............great hit, great sound......and if I remember
rightly, some of the best ring, especially the tag. Good control,
not a lot of oversinging.

MatriX..............can't remember, sorry.

Overall, I think there was a lot of oversinging. Again, not knowing
trueness of webcast sound. I am consistently losing focus on
the low, tight chords and hearing that focus carried into the
higher range which then kills the overtones and sounds tight,
strained, etc. Now, remember, I am not into sound as much as
visual.............and not a music genius by any stretch.........and
this is my first experience with webcast sound..........so I may
be all wet here........which will help if I get flamed !!!!!! :-)

Renee Walsh
Night Magic...........but the above mentioned opinions are mine, good or bad.

I've watched nearly all the competitors. I've scored along at home.
I couldn't believe how close, and in some cases exact, my scores
were with the 15 guys in the pit. I had 18 of the top 20 correct,
and 7 of the 10. I didn't get to hear O.C. Times, so I didn't
have them in the 20.

I think Renee's assesment is pretty accurate. Although I love
Metropolis and did have them in the 10. I think SEP didn't
quite make the cut. Not barbershop enough for me, and very lead
standout-ish. But that's just me.

Matrix's performance in the QF round was great. Loved it.
Their performance in the Semi's left me feeling uninspired.
I don't know why; it just didn't connect.

Max Q's performance was technically excellent in the semi's as
oppossed to the percieved(?) baubles in the QF. But again, it just
didn't connect with me. Maybe that's because I don't want them to
win THIS year. I'd love to see Gotcha! or Riptide take it instead.

Rounders were great. Sean had an unfortunate "vocal chord
malfunction" in one of the tags. But, the showman he is, he
quickly recovered. Too bad, I had them in the 10.

Realtime is the surprise of the contest for many. I had gone
to their website a few weeks ago and downloaded a sample or two.
Tight, polished sound. Excellent presentation. If they've got
songs 5 & 6 ready, we just might hear their name tonight in the 5.

Realtime, Flipside, Wheelhouse, and Gotcha!/Max Q will be battling
it out next year for sure. I can't wait, I hope I'm hearing it live
(back stage would be great) instead of this webcast deal.

Opinions are my own and not meant to hurt. I love and respect all
the competitors.

Subject: The "Barber Classic" nominations

In the interests of encouraging the choice of
songs from the "Classic" period 1890-1922,
we propose The "Barber Classic" nominations
from the Louisville quartet contestant songs.

Please post your nominees to bbshop.
This will provide positive reinforcement
to those who choose these harmony songs.

Extra credit is recommended for those where
both the song and arrangement are in the Public
Domain.

An example might be Gotcha! singing
"Wait 'Till the Sun Shines Nellie".

Thank you for your positive response
to this upbeat proposal.

It's always cool when the champs are announced. But sometimes it's
really special.

I was backstage in 1980 when the Boston Common were announced and
the place went wild.

I was in the pit in 1999 when FRED was announced and the place
went wild.

I was in the audience in 2002 when Four Voices were announced,
and the place went wild at their unique combination of youth,
vitality, and true barbershoppiness.

I was there in 2003 when Power Play was announced, and the place
went wild because, as Society President Rob Hopkins so eloquently
and concisely put it this week, they "exemplify the values of
barbershop."

And now, I have two more moments to cherish.

I can say I was there to witness the joy of the man and the crowd
when Gotcha! was announced as champion, thus giving our beloved
Jim Kline his gold medal (finally) after so many years knocking
at the door. (BTW, while all of Gotcha! sang with fabulosity
all week, special kudos to my tenor colleague Garry Texeira, who,
always fine, really outdid himself this year.)

And I can say I was there when, less than a year after his brother
Rob passed away, Jim Henry finally led the Ambassadors of Harmony
to the championship -- a special bit of karma, for sure.

While all the medalists and, indeed, all the competitors deserve
congratulations, in light of the hype it'd be easy to forget to
congratulate MaxQ for their second place finish. (OK, so I had
Riptide second, but what do I know?) No matter how many gold
medalists you assemble, there's no guarantees in the quartet
game, and placing second in your first year of competition is no
mean feat. Way to go, guys!

Further regarding MaxQ, someone with a bizarre sense of humor
suggested that future quartets learn a karmic lesson: appear in
the competition at least once before you set up your own booth in
the Harmony Marketplace. LOL! Oh, those lobby conversations...

Finally, kudos to Saturday Evening Post on their first medals,
to Realtime for a stunning debut, and to Vocal Spectrum for all
the reasons previously mentioned elsewhere.

Wow. What a fabulous webcast by Rich and Phil and I'm sure *many*
more of the team behind the scenes. Each year they strive to improve
the quality and content of the event, and succeed in doing so. Did
I hear right that they were "downstairs" from the contest site? If
that's so, then those guys are giving up the chance to hear those
great quartets and choruses *live* from some (most likely) great
seats, but instead choose to watch it on some remote monitor and
liten through an earpiece or something? All that so we can enjoy
the webcast. Wow. Our "thanks" doesn't seem enough.

Side Story: A good friend of ours and her husband are perennial
attendees at International - probably at least the past 15-20
years or so. They have scrapbooks for each and every convention
filled with photos. But this year, her mom's health was not good,
so they cancelled all their plans for Louisville and sold their
registrations. Her mom passed away a little more than a month
ago, a bit too late to try to make plans and attend. They don't
have internet at home, so we invited them over for the Finals
Saturday. We sat around the computer screen and had a great
time. They even brought champagne and we were toasting Gotcha! right
as they were making the announcement. Our friends still can't
believe that they were able to be a small part of the convention
when they were just so certain they would miss out on everything
this year. And yes, we all made a webcast donation together.

Regarding Webcast Fees, I would be against any "required"
contribution. I utilize the webcast as a huge tool to spread the
word about the quality singing that we do by telling all of my
family, friends, and co-workers about it. Any sort of required
"pay-per-view" fee would discourage that. IMHO, future potential
members and supporters *should* be able to view this at no cost.

I also know a lot of high school guys out here in the FWD (and
everywhere else, of course) who may not have the resources to
contribute, but there are TONS of adult barbershoppers would gladly
offer to pay for ANY high school guy so he could watch it. There's
lots of highly respected longtime members who's health prevents them
from attending Internationals anymore. But after years of Society
membership and service, what a great gift to be able to bring the
contest into their home. Any *one* of us would contribute to such
a cause.

So that's my point - let each viewer contribute as to his/her
own ability to do so. The webcast's "suggested contributions"
list was great. The amounts listed were minute in comparison to
the costs of travel, meals, lodging, and registration to attend
International. But required? I woudl request not. As long as the
webcast is achieving their targets - "If it ain't broke..."

That being said, I would support a grass roots "fund-raising"
drive, starting in early May or so, to promote a "Beg-Free" Webcast
from Salt Lake City. I'm sure there are folks who could organize
something and even donate prizes along the way as incentives for
the 100th, 500th donation or something. I'm planning on attending
next year, but heck, I'd contribute just to make sure this fine
broadcast can continue!

Thanks again, WebCast Team.

Hey all - I was sitting 11 rows from the stage (what a blessing from
early registration draw!!!) when 12th Street did the gospel tune.
Great song... the mikes work... and I'm a devout Christian so I
wouldn't be offended in this situation of course. Were they competing
- well, they wouldn't have done it... these guys are all smart enough
to know, hey - "if we get the opportunity, let's sing a favorite..."

ALSO - I wonder if there's anything in the rules against a mike tester
singing an Octet number with past International champs? Who could
forget last year's incredible and extremely entertaining mike testing
set by Freestyle (Lord bless their quartet souls) being joined by FRED
and the entire 4 Voices "I can do anything better than you..." bit?
I'm sure there would be contest rules against competing with an octet
of past champs - but it's MIKE TESTING!!!

Congrats to GOTCHA!!! What better to go down in history with than a
POLECAT package, with the best darn looking outfits on the stage last
night! I must agree with David Harrington after reading the inside of
the Gotcha! Again! CD jacket, I've not heard a quartet RING chords
like these guys. Unbelievable! MAX Q didn't quite measure up to
their credentials, and personally I would've loved to see RIPTIDE in
the Silver, (Don't hang it up guys!!!). They sang with more emotion
than ever, and sold the crap out of all their tunes; BUT, I had a
blast and wanna extend congratulations to all the medallists! You
guys all did awesome jobs.

Hello,

So, you've been to a few SPEBSQSA International's in the past, and
you've been less than satisfied with the seat you bought: It's too hard,
it's too cramped, it's too Naugahyde (Ow!), it's too far away, it's too
close, it puts a crick in your neck because it's at an odd angle, the sound
is screwy, the screens are too too or not enough too, the air conditioning
roars at a hundred and twenty decibels right over your head, the arena was
not designed for sound quality, they sold you a seat that doesn't exist
because they're fold-up chairs on fold-up floors and they forgot how many
they had, you spend all week seat-hopping to find one just a little less
dreadful, it's too just plain uncomfortable, noisy, and unsatisfying!
Is that what's bothering you, Bunkie?

Well, Step Right Up and take a look at the site for the 2005
Salt Lake City Convention, especially the video clips, at
http://www.lds.org/newsroom/showpackage/0,15367,3899-1--21-1-111,00.html
and wrap your hopes and dreams around the serenity, the knowledge, the
yearning for the delights of a week in real honest to good COMFORT and
concert hall acoustics! Wow! How can you possibly miss this one!?!

  I see tickets available at

Hi All ...

I'm so honored and thrilled to be singing with a true Barbershop
legend. Personally, I nominate Brian Beck as one of the all-time
greatest Barbershop singers! The man personally resurrected my
vocal life with his vocal technique, has finished in the Top Ten
in ALL FOUR voice parts and now, holds a new trivia record as
the ONLY Three-Part Medalist (Gold on Baritone with the Dealer's
Choice, Gold on Lead with the Side Street Ramblers, and Bronze
on Bass with SEP). We also believe that he's the OLDEST member
to medal at age 64 years, 11 months! On top of all that, he's
a wonderful guy to sing with. Thanks, Brian for singing with SEP.

An additional bit if trivia ... The Saturday Evening Post is
the first quartet to Medal representing the BABS organization
in addition to our choruses in the Southwestern District (Heart
of Texas, Town North Plano, and Houston) and in the SLD (Bolton
Landing, NY) . Allen and I are proud members of the Sheffield,
England, Hallmark of Harmony chorus and had the priviledge of
competing with them this last BABS convention! Although our
"official" representation is from the Southwestern District,
we are also proud to be a part of BABS and the Bolton Landing,
NY chapter as well.

Finally ... thanks to all of you who have supported SEP in our
efforts. We are very proud of our Fifth Place Medals and will wear
them with gratitude on being awarded them. Congrats to Gotcha
and the Ambassadors for their exemplary Gold Medal performances.
(Love ya, Jimmys!) If you missed Louisville, plan on Salt Lake
City!

Cheers,
Bobby

Kaybari@...

Hi everyone,

We had a fabulous week in Loo-uh-vul (did I get that
right?)! Central States District rocked - Ambassadors won the
chorus contest, Vocal Spectrum (from Ambassadors) won the college
quartet contest, and both our CSD quartets got to sing on Saturday
night. It just doesn't get much better than that!!! My husband and
I have lighted noise makers that we carry with us to help cheer on
the groups we especially support, and we had those darn "flapping
hands" out, shaking them as hard as we could, a LOT this week.

The highlight of our week was the very touching moment when Gas
House Gang sang their swan song with Rob. I can't think of a more
fitting way for them to say goodbye, and I'm sure Rob and his Dad
were up there listening, both of them smiling their approval and
singing along. The next day, I happened to sit with Jim and Rob's
step dad on the shuttle bus, and it was a privilege to visit with
him. He told me that the members of Vocal Spectrum are all from
Lindenwood College, which is where Jim Henry teaches, and that all
four of them sing in Ambassadors. Can you imagine the high those
four young men are on about now - TWO gold medals apiece. Wow!!!!

On the plane home today, I was putting the various scores into
Robben Morin's FABULOUS Junkie Book (by the way, we could have sold
a box full of them all week long, just because people saw us using
ours and wanted to know where they could get one. Robben, think
about letting us be your sales people next year!!), and I noticed
that there were two ties in the quartet contest. There had also
been a tie for third in the college contest. In all three cases,
the scores were listed as ties, period.

My question is - does the Society have a procedure or policy for
breaking ties? SAI goes to the Sound category to break the tie,
and if that is tied, then the Music category is next, followed by
Expression, and finally Showmanship. I'm not aware that any tie
we've ever had in SAI went beyond the first tie-breaking category
(it used to be the Music category that broke the tie until just a
few years ago), although it's certainly possible that it's happened
that way. Maybe someone else out there would know for sure.

Anyway, if the Society DOES have a procedure, is there a reason
that it wasn't used? And if they DO NOT have a procedure, is there
a reason why not?

Enquiring minds want to know. ;-) Thanks for the info!

I haven't heard from the boys of 12th St Rag, but I have to tell
you that I am astonished that the majority of today's posts, so
soon after a fantastic convention worthy of many great discussions
include petty complaints about the Christian song selection for
mic testing the finals round.

Perhaps these fine men were so happy to have made the mic tester
slot, their best placement to date, that they wanted to sing some
praises to Jesus. If so, I think society members of all faiths
should be pleased to see good people boldly pronouncing that their
successes are attributed to someone other than themselves...a
delightfully selfless and non-ego-centric act.

The attitude which purports to respects others' religion by having
no tolerance of its mention is intellectually dishonest. For the
Christian, no Article of SPEBSQSA trumps the great commission,
but it does respectfully require that the society meetings not be a
venue for conversion or dispute. The only "issue" associated with
openly acknowledging your faith occurs when you infringe on, or
show disrespect for, the religion (or the lack thereof) of others.
Respect and tolerance are both two way streets! Making everyone
"comfortable" is not a mandate, for denying the opportunity to
express faith makes the faithful "uncomfortable".

Clearly, the mic testers are not required to perform contestable
material, but should sing bbshop harmony to properly/effectively
test the sound system for its intended use. 12 St Rag did just
that, and sang wonderfully. I was happy for their success, and
delighted by their song selection, whatever their motivation.
I will also be delighted when a Muslim, Jewish, or Buddhist
quartet sings a tune about their faith in an entertainment forum.
I promise to be secure enough in my own faith to not be "put out"
by the expression of theirs.

Wishing us all thicker skin,

Bill Power

Once we collect our thoughts and settle our minds a bit, we'll write
again to make sure we put out proper thank to a lot of people who
helped make this happen.

But, right now, we just wanted to make sure you all know how special
you made us feel all week from our first walk out to our final bow.
To say that we felt the love doesn't begin to describe what our
experience was like on stage and off!

Congratulations to everyone, and to our co-champs, Ambassadors of
Harmony, with our good friend David Wright for their first gold! And
a hearty welcome to 3 gentlemen who walked away with their first
quartet medals ever this weekend: Scott Delude, Allen Gasper, and
Greg Clancy!!

We'll be back once our dust settles, but thank you so much in the
meantime for making this week so special for us!

Hi All ...

What an exhilarating week. How great it was to be there and
witness the Golds being rewarded to the "Jimmys We Love"!

Congrats to Gotcha, and to the three guys who dragged Jimmy,
kicking and screaming, all the way to the GOLD. Allen, Gary,
Chris ... you are CLASS and we love ya for the job you did!

To the Ambassador's of Harmony ... thank you for a memorable
Gold Medal Performance and letting us all know that the continued

To the four AIC quartets who gave their last performances on

that we all are thankful for. (See my prior post on AIC Show -

Finally ... to all of you who have encouraged SEP with your support

Hi all,

Vocal Spectrum would like to thank everyone for their overwhelming
support at the International Convention in Louisville! It was
awesome to see so many great friends and make some new ones as
well. You made us feel so special both before, during and after
the contest! We can't thank you enough.

We want to thank our two primary coaches, Jim Henry and David
Wright. You guys are the best!!! Thanks so much for everything!

We'd also like to thank those who helped us immensely this year with
great coaching, advice and support: Kevin Keller, Mike Slamka, Rick
Knight, Kipp Buckner, Doug Harrington and Sandi Wright. Thanks to
the great Central States District for your strong support! We'll
try our best to represent you well!! Thanks to the St. Louis
Harmony Chorus for giving us a shot and continually supporting
us. Finally, A HUGE thanks to our great friends and brothers, our
chorus - The 2004 International Chorus Champions, The Ambassadors Of
Harmony!!! Thanks so much for your overwhelming love and support!

Louisville showed us that barbershop music is alive and well!!!
The Collegiate Quartet Contest is getting better and better every
year. The competition this year was great and the Westminster
Chorus on Saturday afternoon was unbelievable!!! More than that,
the camaraderie between the next generation of barbershoppers is
amazing! The passion that the young people of this hobby have is
unbelievable and inspiring. After this week, it's evident that
the future of the society is in great hands!! Thanks to the 2003
Collegiate Champions "Heat" who were so gracious and helpful to all
collegiate quartet competitors. You were and ARE great champions
and great ambassadors for this wonderful hobby that we love so much.

We look forward to representing the Ambassadors Of Harmony, the
Central States District and the Barbershop Harmony Society in all
aspects as we spread the word about this great hobby!!

Thanks again to everyone for your overwhelming love and support!

Sincerely,
