The Titans Speak: Music of Handel and Bach

FREIBURG BAROQUE ORCHESTRA
And
EMMA KIRKBY

8:00 P.M., Friday, April 26, 2002
St. Anne Catholic Church 2140 Westheimer

***** Note ****
This is a change in date and location from the original season brochure.

Houston Early Music is pleased to present Freiburg Baroque Orchestra (FBO)
in a concert of music by two of the great titans of music – Bach and Handel.
Artistic Director, Gottfried von der Goltz, will lead the orchestra in
performance of Handel’s Concerto Grosso in F major, Op.3 no.4 for two oboes,
bassoon, strings and basso continuo, and Concerto Grosso in g minor, Op.6
no.6 for strings and basso continuo. The orchestra will be joined by guest
soprano, Emma Kirkby, who will sing arias from Handel’s operas Rinaldo and
Giulio Cesare, and J.S. Bach’s cantata Mein Herze Schwimmt im Blut, BWV 199.

The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra was founded in 1987 and immediately aroused
considerable public attention for its interpretation of early music,
performed at the highest professional level. The orchestra is self
governing and lays great store on democratic structures. Because of this
organizational form, the FBO was able to consciously revive the tradition of
playing works from even the early Romantic period without a conductor, as
was current practice right into the 19th Century. Thus the orchestra
achieves the intensity of chamber music, yet has its own distinctive sound
which could not be produced with “central conducting.” FBO has extended it’
s repertoire into the early 19th century but baroque music can be said to be
the main emphasis of their programing.

Historical instruments, either instruments from the period or copies of such
instruments, which will be used in this performance are: baroque violin,
viol, cello, bass, baroque oboes and bassoon, theorbo and harpsichord.

After an early apprenticeship with his father, Konrad von der Goltz, and
with Ramy Shevelov in Hannover, Gottfried von der Goltz completed his
training at the Juilliard School in New York and the Freiburg Conservatory.
At the age of 21, Gottfried von der Goltz was a member of the North German
Radio Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg. Two years later he decided to give up
his safe position for the artistically demanding position at the FBO. Today
he is an internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso and much sought-after
teacher, having been Professor for baroque violin at the Würzburg
Conservatory since 1997. His work with the FBO includes works for chamber
orchestra from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Soprano Emma Kirkby is known worldwide as one the world’s outstanding
interpreters of vocal music from the Middle Ages through the 18th century.
She has performed with such outstanding orchestras and chamber ensembles as
Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Academy of Ancient Music, the Orchestra of The
Age of Enlightenment, Tafelmusik, Studio de Music Ancienne de Montreal, and
the Consort of Musicke. Her outstanding musicianship and intelligence,
coupled with her brilliant, clear voice make her performances a joy to hear.

Renowned Bach scholar and William Powell Mason Professor of Music at Harvard
University, Dr. Christoph Wolff, will deliver a preconcert lecture at 7:00
in the St. Basil Hall of the St. Anne Parish Center.

Tickets are $25 general admission, $20 for seniors and students, and may be
purchased at the door or by calling 713.432.1744. There will be no charge
for children 12 years and under.

This concert is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Houston
and Harris County through the Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris
County.
And is sponsored in part by Star Motor Cars
