THE ACADEMY OF ANCIENT MUSIC
Andrew Manze - Director/violin soloist
8:00 p.m., Friday, October 11, 2002
Zilkha Hall
Hobby Center for the Performing Arts
800 Bagby Street
Be with us for the opening concert of our exciting new season, presented in
Houston's splendid new performing arts facility, for a concert of glittering
baroque masterpieces by Biber, Leclair, Handel, Geminiani, Vivaldi and
Telemann. This British ensemble is widely recognized as one of the world's
premier period instrument ensembles. The Academy will be led by virtuoso
violinist, Andrew Manze, in his final season as the Academy's director.
The original Academy of Ancient Music was established in 1726 for the
purpose of studying and performing 'old' music - defined initially as music
composed at least a century earlier, but soon to include more contemporary
composers, most notably Handel. The modern revival of The Academy, founded
by Christopher Hogwood in 1973, created one of the first 'period-instrument'
orchestras and is now renowned worldwide for its concerts and recordings of
music from the Baroque, Classical and early Romantic eras. In addition, the
group has commissioned work and recorded works by the contemporary British
composer, John Tavener and performed works by David Bedford and John
Woolrich.
Among the numerous recordings The Academy has to its credit are the complete
symphonies of Mozart on period instruments, and the complete piano concertos
and symphonies of Beethoven and is in the process of recording the complete
Haydn symphonies and the piano concertos of Mozart.
Andrew Manze, trained as a Cambridge classicist, studied violin with Simon
Standage and Maria Leonhardt. He was named Associate Director of The AAM in
1996. He is also 'Artist in residence' at the Swedish Chamber Orchestra
Manze is also active as a conductor in large scale oratorio and symphonic
repertoire, with the Deutsche Sinfonie Orchester as well as the symphony
orchestras of Stavanger, Tampere Norrköping. He guest directs the chamber
orchestras of Zurich, Basel, Västerås and Norway, and period instrument
ensembles such as The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Akademie
für Alte Musik, Berlin, Philharmonia Baroque (USA), Tafelmusik and the
Australian Brandenburg Orchestra.
The 2002-03 tours mark Andrew Manze's final North American appearances with
The AAM in his role as Associate Director. He has been named Music Director
of the English Concert, taking over from Trevor Pinnock in summer, 2003
Tickets are $25 for general admission, $20 for seniors and students, and may
be purchased at the door or by calling 713.432.1744, or by calling the Hobby
Center box office 713.315-2525. There will be no charge for children 12
