VARIACIONES DEL FANDANGO ESPAŅOL
Houston Early Music will present renowned German harpsichordist, Andreas
Staier, in a concert of music based on the rhythms of Spanish dance music of
the 17th and 18th centuries. The concert will be in the Duncan Recital Hall
at the Shepherd School of Music on Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at 8:00 p.m.
Staier, born in 1955, studied modern piano and harpsichord in Hannover and
Amsterdam with Gustav Leonhardt, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Ton Koopman. As
the harpsichordist of the Ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln from 1983 to 1986, he
took part in international concert tours all over the world. At the same
time he continued his intense studies in the interpretation of classical and
post-classical music on the fortepiano. He has since gained an outstanding
reputation as a harpsichordist and fortepiano soloist, as well as chamber
music partner. Today his repertoire includes the music of the 17th, 18th and
19th centuries.
From 1987 to 1996 Staier taught harpsichord at the Schola Cantorum
Basiliensis (Basel, Switzerland). He is known worldwide as one of the very
few great specialists for the harpsichord as well as the fortepiano.
For many of his recordings (for both BMG and Teldec) Andreas Staier has been
awarded international disc prizes. His recording, Variaciones del Fandango
Espaņol, was awarded the"Cannes Classical Award of the Year" in 2000.
Staier will play the Shepherd School of Music's French double harpsichord,
built by Marc Ducornet of Paris.
Prior to the concert, at 7:00 at the Shepherd School, Dr. Matthew Dirst,
University of Houston, will lecture on Scarlatti, Soler and the Spanish
Style.
Tickets are $25 for general admission, $20 for seniors and students, and may
be purchased at the door or by calling 713.432.1744. There will be no charge
for children 12 years and under.
