Dear Patrons of Houston Early Music,
a query from a subscriber to our email list prompted me to offer the following apologia:
WHY DO I RECEIVE ALL THOSE DVD ADS IN MY HOUSTON EARLY MUSIC EMAIL????

utilizes the Yahoo Groups service provided by Yahoo.com. We chose Yahoo
Groups because the service offers comprehensive and convenient features for
both subscribers and administrators (me). Subscribers can join/leave the
lists at will, change/add/remove multiple email addresses, start/stop/select
delivery options, review archives of past messages, and access File, Link,
and Calendar areas (though we currently make little use of these latter
features). Moreover, subscribers who are also members of other Yahoo Groups
can manage their all their memberships with the same tools.
Because the Yahoo Groups service is "free" to both Houston Early Music and
subscribers, our scarce resources go to bringing you music, not email.
However ... there really is no free lunch. The Yahoo Groups service is
supported by advertising. Yahoo regularly, and randomly, attaches
advertisements to messages passing through the groups. Houston Early Music
has no control over the placement or selection of the ads and receives no
compensation (other than free use of the service). And most certainly, we are not affiliated with and
make no endorsement of the products or services offered.
Yahoo is a highly-regarded and reliable enterprise; there is (to my
knowledge) no chance of receiving offensive or inappropriate advertisements
through subscription to Yahoo Groups. (Although some may feel that the random juxtaposition of
a Britney Spears ad with early music strikes a certain dissonance.)
Moreover, the Yahoo privacy policy protects email addresses in Houston Early
Music News from misuse. (Note that email addresses of contributors to
discussions in Houston Early Music Talk do appear in the publicly-available
message archive.) So Houston Early Music offers these services to our
patrons with confidence. We believe they serve a valuable purpose and hope
that you agree -- and will overlook the occasional DVD ad.
