The Houston Early Music’s 2004-2005 season opens Friday, October 15, 8:00 p.m., at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church with the internationally-renowned viol consort Fretwork and acclaimed soprano Emma Kirkby in a concert of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English music for viola da gamba and voice.
Since its London debut in 1986, Fretwork has given concerts and broadcasts around the world, made numerous highly successful recordings, set new standards in the performance of the great English music for viol consort, and generated a living repertory for the medium. In addition to frequent appearances throughout Western Europe, the group has visited Russia, Lithuania, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada. Fretwork’s repertory includes not only works from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but also entirely new music.
Soprano Emma Kirkby is known worldwide as one the world’s outstanding interpreters of vocal music from the Middle Ages through the 18th century. She has performed with such outstanding orchestras and chamber ensembles as Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Academy of Ancient Music, the Orchestra of The Age of Enlightenment, Tafelmusik, Studio de Music Ancienne de Montreal, and the Consort of Musicke. Her outstanding musicianship and intelligence, coupled with her brilliant, clear voice make her performances a joy to hear.
Prior to the concert, at 7:00 pm, Richard Campbell, Fretwork member will give pre-concert talk on the history of the viola da gamba and English music written for the instrument..
Tickets prices are $30 for general admission, $25 for seniors and $10 for students (under age 25 with student ID). Free admission for children under 12. Tickets may be purchased at the door or by calling 713-432-1744.
