A Renaissance Christmas Celebration

see details and complete concert program at

Piffaro, The Renaissance Band returns to Houston for a family holiday program at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, December 11 at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue. The performance is presented by Houston Early Music.

Piffaro will be joined by soprano Laura Heimes in a performance representing the variety of carols, noels, villançicos, motets, chorale settings and ballads that have become the signature of the ensemble’s holiday offerings over the past decade.  In addition, the program offers the distinctive features of four national styles – English, Spanish, French and German .  Piffaro’s colorful variety of instruments includes shawms, recorders, krumhorns, sackbuts, bagpipes, lute, guitar, harp and percussion.

Piffaro, founded in 1980, performs music of  the late Medieval and Renaissance periods.  Modeled after the official civic, chapel and court bands that were the premier professional ensembles from the 14th into the early 17th centuries, the ensemble presents the music, both sacred and secular, that entertained royalty, adorned the mass and decorated state occasions on a daily basis. In addition, the ensemble has pursued the instruments and the vital music of the peasantry and of rustic life.

Under the direction of Joan Kimball and Robert Wiemken, the Band produces its own concert series in Philadelphia. Excerpts from these concerts are regularly broadcast nationwide on National Public Radio’s Performance Today. In the United States the ensemble has performed repeatedly on most of the major early music series and on many university and community series.  In Europe Piffaro has performed at music festivals in Austria, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, The Czech Republic, England, Italy, Colombia, South America, Mexico and Canada.

Concert ticket prices are $30 for general admission, $25 for seniors and $10 for students (with student ID). Free admission for children under 15.  Tickets may be purchased at the door or by calling 713-432-1744.  For more information visit www.HoustonEarlyMusic.org.

Houston Early Music will present the West Coast-based baroque ensemble La Monica in the ensemble’s Houston debut at 8:00 p.m., Friday, May 6 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2353 Rice Blvd. The program, Out of the Depths, highlights the interactions between German and Italian cultures following the ruins of the Thirty Years War a time when Germany entered a period which produced a great flowering of music characterized by cosmopolitan tastes and the steady exchange of ideas over political boundaries. Many German musicians traveled to Italy in order to study with such masters as Monteverdi and Frescobaldi, and many Italian musicians were imported to German-speaking lands.

The program features sacred works by the north Germans: Buxtehude, Tunder and Bernhard, and instrumental chamber works by Austrians: Kerll, Schmelzer and Rosenmuller.

Prior to the concert, at 7:00 pm, Dr. John Lienhard (author and voice of NPR’s The Engines of Our Ingenuity) will discuss scientific advances during the period following the Thirty Years War.

La Monica's Animalia program is an introduction to various baroque string, and keyboard instruments through H.I.F. Biber's Sonata Representativa, which portrays animal sounds from frogs and birds to the cat – ending with the most ferocious animal of all ("Musketeer’s March").  Kids get to show the ensemble how they make each animal sound and then the musicians will show how the instruments can do it. Then all will join in singing Renaissance animal songs.

After the concert, a storyteller guide will lead a nature walk searching for creatures lurking in the Museum’s collection and children will have a chance to create their own masterpiece in a clay workshop.

Benjamin Bagby

Fri., Feb. 11, 2005, 8:00 p.m.
Trinity Episcopal Church
1015 Holman (at Main)

Houston Early Music will present Benjamin Bagby's acclaimed performance of Beowulf at 8:00 pm, Friday, February 11, 2005 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1015 Holman (at Main.) Accompanying himself on a six-string lyre in the manner of the medieval bard, Mr. Bagby will retell the epic story of the hero through the death of the monster Grendel in the original Old English. A Modern English translation will be provided by video surtitles. The instrument used in the performance is based on the remains of a lyre excavated from the grave of a seventh-century nobleman..

In 1974, Mr. Bagby completed degrees in voice and German at Oberlin Conservatory and Oberlin College in 1974, and was awarded a Watson Foundation Fellowship to study the performance of medieval song. He completed a Diploma for Musik des Mittelalters at the Schola Cantorum of Basel in 1977. He is co-founder and director of the early music ensemble Sequentia.

In addition to his activities as singer and co-director of Sequentia, Benjamin Bagby directs the Sequentia ensemble of men's voices for the performance of medieval liturgical polyphony. Sequentia has recently signed a new contract with BMG/DHM records and later this year will release Lost Songs of the Rhineland Harper, a recording of 1,000 year old songs.

Mr. Bagby has been commissioned by the Lincoln Center Festival (New York) to perform the complete Beowulf (a 6-hour performance) in 2006 and next year he will produce a video/DVD production of this Beowulf performance.

Prior to the concert, at 7:00 PM, Dr. Jane Chance, Professor of English, Rice University will give a pre-concert talk entitled "Beowulf: The Hero and the Monster."

Tickets prices are $30 for general admission, $25 for seniors and $10 for students (under age 25 with student ID). Free admission for children under 12. Tickets may be purchased at the door or by calling 713-432-1744.

Our Last Concert of the 2003-2004 Season!

Hispanic Heritage Series

¡Zarzuelas y Tonadillas!

El Mundo
Friday, May 7, 2004, 8:00 p.m.
Christ Church Cathedral
1117 Texas Avenue

Early Conversations Lecture
"The 17th-Century Zarzuela."
7:00 PM

On Friday May 7, Houston Early Music is proud to present El Mundo, a chamber music group specializing in music from Spain, Latin America and Italy. Under the direction of guitarist/lutenist Richard Savino, El Mundo will present a concert version of Sebastian Duron’s Baroque zarzuela Salir el amor del mundo. Loosely translated as Cupid’s Final Folly and first performed in Madrid in 1696, this work is a comical account of Cupid’s confrontation with the chaste huntress Diana. It is a marvelous work of musical theatre. Featured singers will include mezzo soprano Jennifer Lane and soprano Jennifer Ellis.

The zarzuela is a dramatic musical genre that is particular to Spanish culture. Originally named after the Philip IV’s hunting retreat outside of Madrid, where some of the earliest productions took place, the zarzuela evolved at approximately the same time as did Italian opera, and shares a number of characteristics with its musical cousin. What separates zarzuelas from their Italian opera counterparts is that beyond the sung music they also contain sections of spoken dialogue accompanied by dramatic stage action.

Also to be included on the program will be a collection of Spanish tonos humanos (secular songs) and excerpts from Domenico Zipoli’s new world sacred opera San Igancio (c.1730).

Prior to the concert at 7:00 pm, Dr. Richard Savino, California State University at Sacramento and director of El Mundo will present a lecture entitled "The 17th-Century Zarzuela."

Tickets are $25 for general admission, $20 for seniors and students and may be purchased at the door or by calling 713-432-1744.

Our Next Concert

On Christmas Night – Music for the Yuletide Season

Old Carols and Dance Tunes from the British Isles, France, Spain and Appalachia

The Baltimore Consort

Sunday, December 14, 2003, 4 p.m.
Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas

A return engagement by this Houston favorite! Baltimore Consort returns with a selection of old carols and dance tunes from the British Isles, France and Appalachia performed on lute, flute, voices and viols in a program sure to delight the entire family. You and yours are invited to join us after the concert in the Great Hall for wassail and holiday treats.

Founded in 1980 to perform the instrumental music of Shakespeare's time, the Baltimore Consort has explored early English, Scottish, and French popular music, focusing on the relationship between folk and art song and dance. Their interest in early music of English/Scottish heritage has also led them to delve into the rich trove of traditional music preserved in North America. Recordings on the Dorian label have earned them recognition as Top Classical-Crossover Artist of the Year (Billboard), as well as rave reviews elsewhere. Besides touring in the U.S. and abroad, they often perform on such syndicated radio broadcasts as St. Paul Sunday, Performance Today, Harmonia and the CBC's OnStage.

For program information, please see our website at http://www.houstonearlymusic.org/2003/Baltimore.htm

Tickets are $25 for general admission, $20 for seniors and students and may be purchased at the door or by calling 713-432-1744.

Children aged 12 or under are admitted free to all concerts. They are especially welcome at our Christmas concert.

Dear Patrons of Houston Early Music,

a query from a subscriber to our email list prompted me to offer the following apologia:

WHY DO I RECEIVE ALL THOSE DVD ADS IN MY HOUSTON EARLY MUSIC EMAIL????

To host both our newsletter
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HoustonEarlyMusicNews and discussion group
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HoustonEarlyMusicTalk, Houston Early Music
utilizes the Yahoo Groups service provided by Yahoo.com. We chose Yahoo
Groups because the service offers comprehensive and convenient features for
both subscribers and administrators (me). Subscribers can join/leave the
lists at will, change/add/remove multiple email addresses, start/stop/select
delivery options, review archives of past messages, and access File, Link,
and Calendar areas (though we currently make little use of these latter
features). Moreover, subscribers who are also members of other Yahoo Groups
can manage their all their memberships with the same tools.

Because the Yahoo Groups service is "free" to both Houston Early Music and
subscribers, our scarce resources go to bringing you music, not email.
However ... there really is no free lunch. The Yahoo Groups service is
supported by advertising. Yahoo regularly, and randomly, attaches
advertisements to messages passing through the groups. Houston Early Music
has no control over the placement or selection of the ads and receives no
compensation (other than free use of the service). And most certainly, we are not affiliated with and
make no endorsement of the products or services offered.

Yahoo is a highly-regarded and reliable enterprise; there is (to my
knowledge) no chance of receiving offensive or inappropriate advertisements
through subscription to Yahoo Groups. (Although some may feel that the random juxtaposition of
a Britney Spears ad with early music strikes a certain dissonance.)
Moreover, the Yahoo privacy policy protects email addresses in Houston Early
Music News from misuse. (Note that email addresses of contributors to
discussions in Houston Early Music Talk do appear in the publicly-available
message archive.) So Houston Early Music offers these services to our
patrons with confidence. We believe they serve a valuable purpose and hope
that you agree -- and will overlook the occasional DVD ad.

The Splendor of the Serenissima
Dr. Edgar Peters Bowron, Museum of Fine Arts Houston
7:00 p.m., First Presbyterian Church

Houston Early Music is pleased to present Musica Pacifica in a concert of
seventeenth-century Italian instrumental and solo vocal music. Led by
artistic directors Judith Linsenberg and Elizabeth Blumenstock, Musica
Pacifica has been performing, touring, and recording since 1990. Mining a
rich vein of baroque literature for mixed wind/string ensemble, the group
performs the spirited chamber concerti of Vivaldi and Telemann, colorful
dance suites from the courts and opera houses of France, and the more
intimate solo, duo, and trio sonatas from European countries as diverse as
Scotland, Poland, Spain, and England. Musica Pacifica has been described by
the press as "some of the finest baroque musicians in America" (American
Record Guide) and "among the best in the world" (Alte Musik Aktuell). At
home in the San Francisco Bay area, the artists are members of Philharmonia
Baroque, and they appear with many other prominent early music ensembles
nationally and abroad.

Guest artist, Michael Collver is a founding member of Project Ars Nova with
whom he has concertized extensively. He has performed as soloist with
Ensemble Sequentia, Empire Brass Quintet, Tafelmusik, Boston Baroque and the
Boston Camerata. Among his performances as an oratorio soloist are
appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Roger Wagner Choral.
Mr. Collver is on the faculty at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA
and has taught cornetto and early vocal techniques at summer courses in
Europe and the U.S.

Prior to the concert, at 7:00 p.m., Dr. Edgar Peters Bowron, The Audrey
Jones Beck Curator of European Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston will
present a lecture entitled The Splendor of the Serenissima.

The Springtime Art of Machaut and the Trouvères. This “virtuosic and
joyful” ensemble (The Cleveland Plain Dealer) will perform a program of
delights from the springtime of Medieval France, from the birth of the
trouvère tradition to the intricate music of Guillaume de Machaut, “the last
of the trouvères”. Intimate monophony and splendid polyphony are
interlaced with exhilarating instrumental dance music to bring to life the
rich tapestry of 14th -century France.

Fortune's Wheel is a spirited collaboration of four distinguished performers
devoted to rediscovering the riches of medieval musical traditions. Popular
with critics and audiences alike “Fortune’s Wheel takes its medieval music
seriously then transforms [it]...into living, breathing art.” (Cleveland
Plain Dealer) Described as “exemplary performers whose musical instincts
seem to be so right in everything they do...” (San Diego Reader), their
performances combine a meticulous attention to vocal sonority and
instrumental virtuosity with an engaging sense of theater and improvisation.
“Their enjoyment of the music and the pleasure they took in each other’s
company was contagious.” (Boston Globe) They have been featured at the
Amherst and Boston Early Music Festivals and by early music series
throughout America as well as appearances in Mexico City and Regensburg
Germany. Veterans of over 100 early music CDs, their first CD together,
Pastourelle, is now available on the Dorian label.

Prior to the concert, at 3:00 p.m., Fortune’s Wheel member, Robert Mealy
will present a lecture-demonstration
entitled Finding the Trouvères: An Exploration of French Culture Around
1300.

Tickets are $25 general admission, $20 for seniors and students, and may be
purchased at the door or by calling 713.432.1744. There will be no charge
for children 12 years and under.

This concert is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Houston
and Harris County
through the Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County.
