PASSING STRANGE is bursting at the seams with melodic songs, and it features theatrical performances to treasure. Call it a rock concert with a story to tell, trimmed with lots of great jokes. Or call it a sprawling work of performance art. Call it whatever you want, really. I?ll just call it WONDERFUL, and a welcome anomaly on Broadway, which can use all the vigorous new artistic blood it can get.?

With a score that has some of the most soulful rock songs, and witty, thought-provoking lyrics in recent memory, PASSING STRANGE is the moving and hilarious tale of a young, black bohemian on a journey of escape and exploration: leaving the confines of his middle-class, church-reared youth in South-Central LA, the further he travels the more he discovers the journey within is the one that counts.

NEGRO ENSEMBLE COMPANY IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE ALUMNI OF THE NEC PRESENTS AWARD WINNING PLAYWRIGHT LAYON GRAY’S “WEBEIME,” AT THE HARLEM SCHOOL OF THE ARTS –PREVIEWS BEGIN MARCH 28, 2008 – OPENING APRIL 5, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  MARCH --2008

“WEBEIME” CAST MEMBERS

NEW YORK:

The prestigious Negro Ensemble Company (NEC) (Charles Weldon, Artistic Director), is pleased to announce the NEC premiere of WEBEIME, by award winning playwright Layon Gray.

Also directed and choreographed by Gray, WEBEIME is a critically acclaimed, award winning production that is part Spoken Word and part Choreopoem, with evocative Motown pieces in between.

Offering something for everyone, it previews at The Harlem School of The Arts (645 St. Nicholas Avenue -- between 141 & 145 Streets) on Friday, March 28th (7:30 PM). It officially opens Saturday, April 5th at 7:30 PM.

WEBEIME is the portrayal of one man’s coming to terms with the repercussions of the decisions that he has made in life before the inevitable happens. With little time on his side, he searches his soul for inner peace and his mind wanders back down the road that put him in his current predicament. A beautifully written story, WEBEIME takes its audience on a journey filled with emotional ebbs and flows that eventually leads to a dramatic climax sure to move even the most stoic audience. Gray explores universal themes such as abuse and family violence with an eloquence usually reserved for the most seasoned of playwrights. This piece has played to sold-out audiences in Los Angeles and North Carolina at the National Black Theatre Festival, where theatres from around the country fought for the rights to produce the play. THEATRE CORPS NY touts WEBEIME as “…a warrior cry after the bloody battle has been fought and survived- ‘Gripping, unforgettable and deeply profound.” …NY THEATRE says it is, “Poetry in motion- you simply have to see it to get it. There were tears on and off stage- tears came to my eyes.”

Layon Gray is a successful playwright with a number of artistic awards under his belt, including the coveted NAACP Award for Theatre Achievement for his play “The Girls of Summer.” Quickly gaining recognition as one of the hardest working artists in the Los Angeles area, he has been rewarded with loyal audiences for his efforts in keeping African American theatre alive and thriving. Having created the Los Angeles African American Repertory Company in 2003, the theatre has been responsible for continuing to provide provocative work exploring life from the Black perspective. Unapologetic about writing through the prism of a particular cultural lens, his plays are embraced by all races and nationalities because of the honest exploration of universal themes together with his eclectic directing and choreographing skills.

The NEC is no stranger to producing powerfully written and directed plays, such as A Soldier’s Play, written by Charles Fuller (who won the Pulitzer Prize for that groundbreaking production) and directed by Douglas Turner Ward,; The River Niger by Joe Walker, a Tony Award Winner and Tony nominated Playwrights Samm Art Williams and Leslie Lee.

Tickets and Group Sales for WEBEIME are available through Ticket Central (212) 279-4200, and online at www.ticketcentral.com and www.NECINC.org
