During the opening remarks at this week's NAB Radio Show, NAB
President & CEO Eddie Fritts urged broadcasters to serve their
communities so as to preserve "licensing renewal stability". In other
words, traditional radio is required to serve their communities, but
is under fire from failing to have done so. Should they fail to do so
adequately, it is possible they could lose their broadcasting
licenses.
Internet radio isn't under the FCC's regulations, though there are
those that aim to bring our favorite medium under federal
jurisdiction. Yet does anyone here feel have or know of an Internet
radio station that provides a community service? I'd be interested in
hearing about how the station provides the service, especially in view
of the fact that any particular Internet radio is able to be accessed
from just about anywhere. How would a station serve the world? And
don't tell me, "Through good music and/or programming!" Though
programming can certainly be construed as a public service, let's be
more specific.
