Iron & Wine readies EP featuring six new songs
recorded with producer Brian Deck
Micah C. Harding reports:
As 2004 draws to a close and the Pitchfork staff
begins work on the three-day year-end
superfeature which may or may not contain his
2004 full-length Our Endless Numbered Days, Mr.
Sam Beam of Iron and Wine prepares to add another
EP to his rapidly expanding catalog. Entitled
Woman King and scheduled for release via Sub Pop
on February 22nd, the disc will contain six brand
new songs-- his first recordings since Our
Endless Numbered Days. Recorded at August House
Studio in Chicago's Roscoe Village with producer
Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Red Red Meat, Holopaw),
it follows close on the heels of October's
Passing Afternoon single, which featured a
previously unreleased song, "Communion Cups and
Someone's Coat", and a version of "Dearest
Forsaken" recorded live in-studio at KCRW.
If you're an avid follower of Iron & Wine (and
don't forget, we can see inside your soul), you
might know that in addition to the tracks that
ended up on 2002's The Creek Drank the Cradle,
Beam sent 11 other demo recordings to Sub Pop
Records prior to being signed. You probably also
know that those 11 songs have long since surfaced
on the internet as a collection entitled
09-20-02, and if so, Woman King's second track
will likely seem a bit familiar-- albeit in
re-recorded form. It's only one of his best.
Tracklist for Woman King:
01 Woman King
02 Jezebel
03 Grey Stables
04 Freedom Hangs Like Heaven
05 In My Lady's House
06 Evening on the Ground (Lilith's Song)
Several songs from Woman King are reportedly
planned for inclusion on the soundtrack to Paul
Weitz's upcoming workplace comedy In Good
Company. Its soundtrack is set for release
January 11th, with The Shins, Peter Gabriel,
Aretha Franklin and previous Shortlist star
Damien Rice also in tow. The film itself stars
Scarlett Johansson and your boyfriend, Dennis
Quaid.
Finally, if you can't get enough Iron & Wine in
your system before the release of the new EP,
Beam is touring the West Coast until
mid-December. So, you know, hopefully you live
there. Dates:
