Iron & Wine: "Jezebel"
Iron & Wine's Samuel Beam has had a successful
year, effortlessly making the transition from
bare-bones acoustic recordings to Brian Deck's
considerably glossier production style on Our
Endless Numbered Days. "Jezebel", from his
upcoming EP, Woman King, further demonstrates his
skill crafting songs with more densely
orchestrated arrangements. This track first
appeared on 9/20/02 Home Recordings, a collection
of early demos, but on this re-recorded version
Deck fills out the original with subtle dulcimer
and piano embellishment. Most of the song's key
elements remain intact. Now, delicate tenor
harmonies add further emotional power to the song
and its bittersweet, ambiguously redemptive
depiction of Beam's elusive, departed muse
(embodied by the Biblical temptress). Beam's
casual guitar accompaniment and deliberate
mid-song banjo solo also help to temper the
sadness at the core of the song. The track, like
the rest of the EP, doesn't necessarily expand
upon Our Endless Numbered Days' sonics, but it's
arguably as beautiful as anything Beam has
recorded. [David Moore; December 10th, 2004]
