Our Endless Numbered Days" by Iron & Wine (Sub
Pop Records).

FSU film school grad Sam Beam entrusted his
supple, delicate songs to the studio
ministrations of producer Brian Deck (Modest
Mouse, Red Red Meat) and the result is a luminous
and stirring document. Beam and crew - which
includes Tallahassee guitarist Patrick McKinney
of Langtry and drummer Jeff McGriff - paint sonic
pictures that flare across the aesthetic horizon
like epic sunsets. This exquisitely spare and
completely gorgeous disc throbs with a visual
sense as gossamer as a spider web, not surprising
given Beam's other job as a cinematography
teacher in Miami. This is one of the most
spiritually satisfying and aurally addictive
albums of the year. I defy you to resist the
allure of a song such as "Each Coming Night,"
which is capable of rendering you speechless with
its stunning, deceptive simplicity.
