This is a monthly autopost to prevent Yahoo from deleting this group (a fan
club, as it were) from inactivity.
The JRAS is responsible for producing the comprehensive Jane Relf 2-cd
compilation called "Jane's Renaissance," from Renaissance Records USA. The
tracklist is available both at the label's website and at amazon.com.
Label: http://cdthen.net/janerelf.html
Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/5ne6gd
or http://amazon.com/dp/B001GF9MA2
After 12 months, the label has sold 800 copies.
Buy yours now in time for the holidays, before it goes out of print!
The JRAS is also has the following web features in the "Files" section:
1) "A 15 Year History" - written in a Barry Miles style, this brief pictorial
history of Renaissance, Illusion, and Jane Relf is likely one of the most
concise histories of these artists available on the internet.
2) "Songs" - contains the rarities Carpet of the Sun, High Mountain, Won't You
Come Along, Kellogg's Country Store (advertisement), and an intriguing vocal
warmup in rehearsal that transitions from Silent Night, to Happy Xmas, to Gone
Fishing. Plus, there is a special Mpeg video of the Coca Cola television
advertisement that gained very wide critical and public acclaim in 1971, in
which Jane was a participant.
3) YouTube links - Feel free to contribute YouTube links to this folder! Thanks
to Josh for producing some wonderful tribute videos to Jane and the band!
4) Jane's Renaissance Reviews - We will try to find reviews and or links to
posted comments about the Jane's Renaissance release, and post them here.
All kinds of goodies on the JRAS. Check in and see!

I saw a review of the Renaissant album a while back;
it looked interesting, so I put out a search for it on eBay. Two or
three years on, it still hasn't appeared even once -- which suggests
either that it's so fabulous that no one wants ever to be parted from it,
or that it sold very, very few copies.

That would explain the flurry of activity surronding the issue of who
actually owns the Renaissance name.

I liked it. I reviewed it, forgot where I posted the review (I think on JRAS and/or RIS, plus on some Classic Rock Yahoo page). It still can be purchased, I believe, from the Sullivan website itself www.tsullivan.net.

All of Jane Relf's Stairway appearances are on Jane's Renaissance. Stairway makes nice mood music, and is a pleasant, simple, soothing listen. But you will not find any other Jane Relf appearances on any other Stairway tracks that aren't already on Jane's Renaissance. bw

I'd be willing to purchase these two CDs, including also for the additional tracks on each disc, even if those tracks don't feature Jane.
So that's my question: is Jane featured on any of the additional tracks on those two CDs, besides the 6 in question that are already on "Jane's Renaissance?" Or, if I bought those 2 CDs, would all the tracks besides the 6 already included on "JR", all of them in fact not feature Jane at all, only the other musicians?

Thanks for the comments, Marcello. And thank you in advance anyone else who wishes to comment. I do think when I get around to it and despite its greater than $45 price on amazon right now, eventually I'll buy "Through the Fire."

Though the Fire, for me, doesn't have much of the original Renaissance style. Maybe something in common with the second album (Illusions), songs like Love is All. All the lead vocals are done by Jim, Jane only sang backing vocals. The main reference are Louis' unique bass and Hawken's piano, they did a show, like always.
This is what I remember. I only listened to the cd two or three times, on a store. I still don't have it.
Now that "Through the Fire" has been brought up, and seemingly rarely in recent posts within our group, can someone answer each of these questions of mine?
(1) why was nothing from "Through the Fire" included on "Jane Relf: Renaissance"?
(2) Why is "Through the Fire" so rare/high-priced/few in number, in terms of availability for sale right now on amazon.com usa site?
(3) Why is the official amazon description of the album apparently quite inaccurate (although the Yardbirds group is mentioned in it)? Is someone willing to notify amazon of their inaccuracy?
(4) Are there any files within our yahoo group evaluating "Through the Fire"? Can a few of you comment on your assessment of the album?
(5) I've decided my favorite original releases featuring Jane are "Renaissance: Illusion" and presumably, since I loved the 6 Stairway tracks on "Jane's Renaissance", Stairway's "Moonstone" and "Raindancing" releases. These latter two are CDs available on amazon that I'm trying to budget to be able to buy soon. But I'm thinking I'd love "Through the Fire". So, what does it sound like: is "Through the Fire" reminiscent more than anything else, of either: Renaissance MKI, Illusion, or Stairway, or does it primarily go off into even a different direction?
Thanks, everyone,
Paul from Denver

Robert makes a few excellent points concerning ownership of the Renaissance name. In addition also consider the 'Renaissance Illusion' album 'Through The Fire' of just a few years ago. If Jane Relf owned the rights to the name the album would not have been billed as 'Renaissance Illusion' but simply as Renaissance. Whoever thinks that Jane 'owns' the name is mistaken.

1) Jane has no lead vocals (or solo vocalise) on "Through the Fire." Therefore, no tracks were included on Jane's Renaissance.
2) Small label (Kissing Spell), limited release, presumably out of print.
3) I don't know. Anyone can contact Amazon with errors.
4-5) type in "through the fire" on the JRAS and also on the RenaissanceIllusionStairway Yahoo group search boxes (we don't have discussions on RIS anymore, since it's spam-vulnerable, but there's a big archive of photos and discussions), and see if any discussions come up about TTF. I listened to it last month at the same time I got Jimbo's new solo release, and I LOVE Through the Fire (moreso than I realized years ago). Jane's backing vocals are on about half of the tracks, and sound quite nice. I especially love John Hawken's keyboards on TTF, and Jim's lyrics are right on target for what we face in this life.
Now that "Through the Fire" has been brought up, and seemingly rarely in recent posts within our group, can someone answer each of these questions of mine?

The point is that a rumor was started, presented to the JRAS for vetting, and largely disproven. For matters involving Jane Relf, we aim to authenticate any statements that address her, her band, or related issues. Michael, who started the described rumor, is an avid Ren Mark 2 fan, who was in telephone contact with Betty Thatcher Newsinger. He is certainly to be credited for having access to discuss things by phone with a legendary lyricist (most of us don't!).
As this board knows, 5-6 years was spent transforming the "dream" of a Jane Relf box set (Jane's Renaissance) into reality. Those active on this board were patient and supportive during the transformation of a "rumor" into reality. Whether something comes from all this (Betty Thatcher new writings, and possibilities from there translating into a releasable music album) certainly can be exciting to avid fans such as us. It is interesting the life a rumor takes, and the passion that is generated among fans of this music.
"Renaissance 2009" with Haslam, Dunford, et al., is what likely generated all of this new interest in Betty Thatcher's whereabouts. All we can hope is that this tour stimulates the interests of a new generation fans for Mark 2, especially Mark 1, and untimately, the Yardbirds and all their other offshoots (Steamhammer, Armageddon, anything Keith Relf and Jim McCarty ever laid their hands on or lent their talents to). We can certainly hope for new material, new vocal appearances, rejuvenated voices, and so on. But in an era of new music that may not lend itself to legacy, let's continue to introduce new fans to what we now consider "the classics."
Best regards to all.

Alice Cooper does NOT pay royalties to the former members of the original group.
I have known drummer Neal Smith for many years and he has told me that he gets
NOTHING from Alice.
It's not going to happen. The story is totally bogus. According to an e-mail that I received from Jim today he hasnt seen nor spoken to Jane in years.

I came across this interesting reference to ownership of band names while
reading up on Alice Cooper.
The actual ownership of the Alice Cooper name is often cited[citation needed] by
intellectual property lawyers and law professors as an example of the value of a
single copyright or trademark. Since "Alice Cooper" was originally the name of
the band, and not the lead singer (e.g. Uriah Heep, Jethro Tull, etc.), and it
was actually owned by the band as whole, Cooper paid, and continues to pay, a
yearly royalty to his original bandmates for the right to use the name
commercially. Although the exact amount is not known, insiders agree that it is
a significant enough sum for the other band members to live comfortably
on.[citation needed]
Here's the actual link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Cooper#Personal_life
I wonder if Annie and company should be paying royalties to Jane Relf, that is
profits from the concerts? And is she getting royalties from music sales?
Robert
I have e-mailed Jim about this rumor about him and Jane working together again.
I'll let you know what he says. In the meantime check out some new rock n roll
from Jimbo at http://www.yardbirds.us
A collaboration with former Animals guitarist Hilton Valentine and former
bandmate John Hawken from Renaissance. Dave walker (Savoy Brown) on vocals. A
nice rendering of the Graham Gouldman song 'You Stole My Love'
Cheers,
Russ Garrett
Thanks for the (possible) news.
A new Jane Relf/Renaissance-Illusion album would be a great treat.
Let's hope.

I just had an interesting phone call the other morning. My cell phone

was a female voice with a British accent on the other end and low and

Thatcher ringing me from her hideaway in England. It came out of the
blue after I sent her an e-mail with the latest new and the link to the
WFUV interview with Pete Fornatel, Annie Haslam and Michael D.
She also told me the Mr Tout is back home after spending time with
Betty and a friend. From what I was told John was never asked if he
wanted to be part of this Renaissance go round. John also told me on
the phone 2 weeks ago that he did not want to deal with the pressure

What may be brewing is not a colaberation Between Betty and Micheal. I
hope you are all sitting down for this one. Betty may be writing for

wonder if an album/cd will come out of it and wondering even more if it

concise histories of these artists available on the internet.

Hello all: I had the great pleasure of interviewing Michael this morning, my article with his comments on the upcoming Renaissance tour is at this link. Enjoy.
I think Joe did an on-target review. I like the album, but it is a bit of a departure from Through the Fire and Out of the Dark. Top of Time is intimate and personal in ways different from TTF, specifically. I never thought Jim could record anything more intimate/personal than TTF (e.g., "My Old Friend" recounting his being ignored by Eric Clapton when the Yardbirds were being inducted at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony), Top of Time is a peaceful personal journey with strategically sparse production that in the end renders it as nicely intimate and personal, in ways different from what was present on TTF's intimacy (the production of which being more layered in its midtempo pace, illustrated best by the crescendo intro to the opening TTF track "Another Turn of the Wheel"). Both Top of Time and TTF complement each other, but Top of Time should not be anticipated as a "logical follow up" to TTF. Top of Time is its own creation from a masterful muse.
