Jack Lawrence dies at 96; songwriter did lyrics for 'Tenderly' and 'Beyond the
Sea'
By Dennis McLellan LA Times
March 18, 2009
Jack Lawrence, a songwriter who wrote the lyrics for hits such as "All or
Nothing at All," "Tenderly" and "Beyond the Sea," has died. He was 96.
Lawrence, who fractured his pelvic bone in a fall in his Redding, Conn., home
Friday, died of complications Sunday at Danbury Hospital, said Richard D.
Lawrence, Lawrence's longtime partner whom he adopted.
In a songwriting career that began in the early 1930s, Lawrence had his songs
recorded by artists such as Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, the Andrews Sisters,
Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Tony Bennett.
Among his songs, written in collaboration, are "Sunrise Serenade," which was
recorded by Glenn Miller; and "Yes, My Darling Daughter," a hit for Dinah Shore.
Singer-pianist Michael Feinstein, a friend, said Lawrence had lots of hits
through the years but comparatively few became standards.
"A standard is a song that lives through the ages," Feinstein told The Times on
Tuesday. "Like many songwriters, a lot of his hits at the time have not endured
past the era in which they were popular."
But, Feinstein said, "various other songs were ones that became a veritable
theme song" for the performer, and their status as standards was assured.
"Tenderly," he said, became Rosemary Clooney's theme song.
"All or Nothing at All," he said, "was one of Frank Sinatra's early hits that
survived because of Sinatra's love of the song and his revising of it and
re-recording it through the years."
And "Beyond the Sea" will always be connected with Bobby Darin.
"It was a French song for which an English lyric was created with no success,"
Feinstein said. "Then Jack wrote a new English lyric, which was successful with
an anthemic sort of lyric that matched the majesty of the tune.
"But when Bobby Darin found the song and swung it, it became an instant classic,
and people only perform it a la Bobby Darin."
Although Lawrence was primarily a lyricist, he also had great success writing
music and lyrics, said Feinstein, who wrote the foreword to Lawrence's 2004
memoir, "They All Sang My Songs."
Lawrence's song "Linda," which he wrote for his lawyer's young daughter, Linda
Eastman -- she later married Paul McCartney -- was a big hit for Buddy Clark.
And "If I Didn't Care" established the success of the Ink Spots.
The son of Russian immigrants, Lawrence was born in Brooklyn on April 7, 1912.
He was a self-taught pianist and began writing songs at age 10.
But after he graduated from high school, his parents urged him to enroll in the
First Institute of Podiatry.
He did and graduated in 1933, about the same time his first song, the hit "Play
Fiddle Play," written with Arthur Altman and Emery Deutsch, was published.
Lawrence, who served in the Coast Guard and the Merchant Marine during World War
II, continued writing songs throughout the war.
His songwriting took him to Hollywood -- he shared a best song Oscar nomination
with Richard Myers for "Hold My Hand" in the 1954 comedy "Susan Slept Here" --
and Broadway, for which he wrote music and lyrics for a number of productions,
including the 1964-65 musical comedy "I Had a Ball."
In the '80s, Lawrence was both a Broadway producer and owner of the Jack
Lawrence and the Audrey Wood theaters.
He was co-producer of off-Broadway's long-running "Other People's Money" and on
Broadway with "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music" and "Come Back to the 5 &
Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean."
Lawrence was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1975.
"He was very secure in his place in the songwriting order," Feinstein said. "He
knew that he was not the best-known, but he also had the confidence of having
had great success through the decades."
Richard Lawrence is his sole survivor.

You didn't miss anything. The guys only played once, Wednesday afternoon. Then they had a meet and greet session ( like they have after most every show, and an autograpth session. Dean told me it was very uneventful. Had a good time with Paul Revere and the Raider and Bobby Vee. Didn't mingle much with Burton Cummins and The Guess Who. Limited available of places to eat and as Dean said, "you know how tight I am, so I didn't drink much beer. However, had it been free he would have let the Good Times Roll. That is the week in a nut shell.

Hi everyone:
Nice new site.
By accident I came across a Surf City Allstars show announcemnt that was going to be on a cruise ship. Unfortunately I found it one day after the ship sailed without me. It was to the Caribbean. I would have like to have gone on that one but had no clue.

I received my copy of the CD today and Wow! The clean sound of these
new recordings are great. I have always enjoyed the cuts from the
unreleased 'Carnival Of Sound' album, and to have new versions of seven
of those tracks is phenomenal. Keep up the good work and I look
forward to Vol. 2 (I personally could have done with less of the
montages).

Warren,
Amazon it catching up.
There was a delay at the post office in Lexington, KY. Amazon has received a number of shipments from us, waiting to be put into their system.
Cameron is on them about it . . . So for all those who pre-ordered, just hang tight and the matter should be resolved soon.
There is also an option at Amazon to order directly from the label (Cinecam) . . . and the album is also available through CDBaby.com:

Thank you for the prompt response. I knew that "Nice Guys Finished Last" couldn't have been Jan & Dean. I've always thought it was a pretty good song - even though my copy is unbelievably muddy, the nice arrangement and catch melody still manages to come though.
Just wondering: is there any cd compilation that you're aware of featuring the Matadors... or Jan Berry's outside productions? It'd be nice to hear these rarities in a clear format.
On another note, as others are offering their two-cents, I thought I'd like to comment on your selection of material for the Tribute album.
I think the choice of selections for this project were outstanding and that limiting yourself to covering just 'the hits' would have been a big mistake. Jan created some wonderful stuff that few people have
ever heard. I remember the first time I 'discovered' stuff like "Fan Tan" - I was completely blown away.
The early surf stuff is/was great, but there was much more that Jan and Dean had to offer when 'the accident' occurred. Even though their career had hit a bit of a snag by that point, there's enough evidence to support the idea that a resurgence was just around the corner. Imagine the possibilities had an uninjured Jan been given the studio freedoms allowed by, say, a label like Warner Brothers. Whew!
No, I think you did exactly the right thing by offering up these classic tracks. Heck, there are dozens of cover bands that can (and do) nothing but the smashes... there's nothing special about that.
Thanks again!

Derek,
I get what you're sayin' . . . but we're out to broaden the market for Jan & Dean. We certainly want to attract the "oldies crowd" . . . the Boomers (that's a given) . . . but we also want to appeal to the sunshine pop / psychedelic audience . . . and just as importantly, the younger generation of listeners and musicians who revere that era.
Jan & Dean DID have a presence in that era . . . It's just not widely known.
If you want the more familiar hits . . . there are plenty of Dean Torrence covers to choose from -- from the 1970s through the 1990s, and beyond (with his band).
On the other hand . . . this is only "Vol. 1" . . . and I do have the raw materials (original music scores) to re-create more of the hits in the same fashion as we've done with the current album.
Our approach to this project was calculated . . . and will pay dividends down the road, in terms of Jan & Dean's legacy.
Thanks in advance Mark for doing this I am really looking forward to this CD . Jan always seemed to be looking for the next trend. Like the way he used the Vic Diaz and the Matadors on Stingray- already going for a little bit of the mid-60s East Los Angeles sound. 2008 is turning out to be a good year for J & D fans with the resent release of the Liberty Singles & now the obscurities which I really like that you put on the Jan Tribute Album. I must say, it's a very ODD selection of songs. Typically, a tribute album focuses on an artist's popular hits and most well known singles and album tracks, rather than focusing on very obscure and unreleased songs. I'm not saying this won't be a good album. As a true fan and collector, I'll certainly buy a copy. I've heard some of the samples and they sound good. I just think it's a very bizarre approach to Jan Berry and his music, especially from a marketing point of view. An album like this is only going to appeal to die-hard fans and collectors (like us), while it will have little appeal to mainstream oldies listeners and typical Jan & Dean fans. Just my personal opinion. Even if it does sell alot of copies, I would still have preferred to see an album packed with cover version of all their classic hits instead of obscurities.

The exception to all of this is the phenomenal 1985 JAN & DEAN SILVER SUMMER album which is amazing. I'd dare say the 1985 Dean Torrence version of HONOLULU LULU with it's powerful track and searing lead surf guitar gives the original a major run for its money.

There are plenty of hits compilations out there. This is a compilation of the best and most interesting Jan Berry productions and songs - the art, if you will, of his and Dean's career, particularly those musical moments that are both brilliant and largely unheard. The gems that underscore his talent as a writer, producer and arranger, particularly after the accident. Take a song like FAN TAN - not heard by most folks as it's so rare - but as spectacular as any of the hits.
This collection is not meant to be "The Best of Jan & Dean" by other artists. Quite frankly, who in the hell would want to hear that?

I must say, it's a very ODD selection of songs. Typically,20a tribute album focuses on an artist's popular hits and most well known singles and album tracks, rather than focusing on very obscure and unreleased songs.

My copy of the Jan and Dean boxe set arrived. All things considered, I like it. It does sound very much like my vinyl records, though. I was disappointed that Baby Talk and Heart and Soul were not on there, I just assumed they would be. But I have been wishing for a coph of From All Over the World for a long time. All I had left was a record album and you couldn't find that on anyting but a rare cd. So I will add my two other favorite songs to my ipod and consider I have a rather comprehensive collection all in one place.

If Im not mistakenBitman1 is correct about the fact of the Liberty LP releases (in mono) were just folded down stereo (or should I say Visual Sound?
However, GTTOLR are Jans 45 mixes, according to interviews Ive read (I will look up citations later), but I remember that Dean wanted to release Jans mixes due to their reflection of the sound heard on car radios (where Jan would often have acetates of the 45s played on KFWB and would audition them in his own car before OKing the releases.

GTTOLR was mono, but may not have been Jan's mono mixes. This album uses Jan's original 45 singles masters. I'm guessing that back in the day when Bones mixed the cuts to stereo for Jan & Dean's albums (back in the day when they came out in both mono and stereo) that the stereo mix was just 'folded down' to mono for the mono album master. More than likely those fold downs were what they used for GTTOLR. I'm thinking this will be our first chance ever to hear Jan's (except for Popsicle, which I'm hoping will be Dean's 45 mix to keep it original) original creations on CD.

At the time that album came out (1974) original J&D albums were hard to find... this was the only way to hear rare stuff like Bucket T, Three Window Coupe, Schlock Rod, etc. If United Artists had spent a quarter of Capitol's ad budget for ENDLESS SUMMER this collection would have gone platinum. Well, it's not exactly a unique idea. I mean, it looks like it's basically along the same lines as the "Gotta Take That One Last Ride" CD, which I think is still in print and available on the internet. The "One Last Ride" CD also had the original mono mixes of many of their hits and singles, although it had less songs than this new collection.
I'll definitely being buying this new CD, and I'm glad to see that attention is being paid to Jan & Dean once again. I'm just not sure that it's going to sell very well, since most of these songs are already available on "Gotta Take That One Last Ride" and various other CD compilations.

It won't be out until 6/17, but I've preordered. It's a Collector's Choice exclusive of the mono mixes of all their Liberty singles - Both A and B sides. These are Jan's original mixes from the master tapes. A 2-CD set with liner notes, pics and interviews with Dean, among others.
Just ordered the cd box set last week and received a notice that it has been shipped. Can't wait to get it. Was wondering what people thought of the book, noted below. I haven't found that anywhere yet.
Has anyone heard's Dean's opinion on the new cds?

Hi Trish,
I'm glad to hear you are doing well. The list stays pretty quiet, but fortunately is still active.
I FINALLY (!) received my copy of the Liberty Singles today. I had pre-ordered. It WAS worth the wait! The mastering is stellar - the sound is so clear and full. In my opinion, this is THE CD most fans have been waiting for. I know it's at the top of my list in terms of sound and having all the mono singles in one place. Now, if they'd only release the LP's in mono.... Naw, never happen, but there is always hope.
My Landy, this seedy sounds grate!

Hi friends. I must agree with the other messages that have been posted so far. This collection was great, and it's a MUST HAVE for any Jan & Dean fan!!! If you haven't already done so, get your copy today!
Honestly, I never had so much appreciation for mono mixes as I did when I listened to this CD collection. I've heard people say that stereo is better because all the instruments and vocals can be heard more clearly, and they aren't all "meshed together" like when you listen to music in mono. But sometimes on the stereo versions, the most essential vocals are mixed-down too much, while the volume of other instruments is turned up too much. For instance, the backround falsetto on "Who Put The Bomp" is much more prominent on the mono version, while it is barely audible on the various stereo versions I've heard. Also, Jan's lead vocals stand out more on many of the mono versions, while they are often drowned out by the band and orchestra on the stereo versions. Plus, I really don't like those mixes that have the lead vocal coming out of only one speaker. Somtimes they even have all the vocals coming out of only one speaker. I'd much rather hear the song in mono, which sounds much more natural to me.
So, to sum it all up. "Jan & Dean: The Complete Liberty Singles" may be the best J&D compilation ever! I really loved hearing it. I will also hold out hope that the original LP's may also be re-issued in mono one day.

Got the new Liberty Singles CD. WOW!!! What great sound and lots of punch. I don't think I'll listen in stereo again. Cool liner notes and pics, too. If you're wondering if it's worth the price tag, the answer is 'Yes!!' Too bad Jan isn't with us to enjoy his work again...and so we could thank him again. The sound on this set is stunnng.

Interesting...I haven't heard GTTOLR in ages...since I converted to CD then mp3 years ago. In any case, it seems to me that GTTOLR was issued on CD by One Way. I've had a few of their CD's and while they're okay, they're certainly not meticulous about re-mastering, to say the least. This set should be quite an improvement...I hope!

I went back and doubled checked, and what Ron told me related to LP masters. This guy "Bert" in the early '70s -- during the UA days before EMI bought them -- copied a bunch of LP masters to new Ampex tape (via Dolby), and then destroyed the originals from the '50s and '60s. So any of that stuff that gets used now has to be "baked" first.
But this isn't the case with the single masters. According to Ron, they're all there but a few. For example, Ron could never find "Frosty" and "She's Still Talkin' Baby Talk" -- and he once used a mint 45 needle drop of "Frosty" for a Christmas comp he put together.
Also, people have mentioned "Gotta Take That One Last Ride" in this thread . . . and I know there are a number of audiophiles who dislike those mono versions.
This new CCM mono J&D comp should sound a cut above anything we've gotten so far, in terms of mono comps.

Hi Mark,
Do you mean "baked" as in baking to take the moisture out? 1960's and earlier tapes don't need baking.
A lot of reformulated tapes from the late '70s/early '80s (especially Ampex 256) are notorious for attacting moisture and "gumming" up tape machine mechs and heads.
I wonder what the reasoning behind the baking of the original masters was? Has anything been written by Ron Furmanek on the subject?
