Hey did anyone see the documentary about Solomon Burke.. on friday night on bbc2, it was shown before on bbc4. whos that.. he was special guest at the winter tour.. got to see him at RAH last year he was fab.. the tv program  was a story of how he started off in the music business, and there was clips of him in Jools studio (well a lot of the band were in the room, so i think it was his studio). He has such a fab voice! lucky us to get to see him..

Ruby is in Hayes, Middlesex tonight, and Winstons Band Real, is at Jagz in Ascot, Friday, i will be at the friday gig so see you then..and Derek Nash will be doing an acoustic set at Jagz on 22.10.06!

I can happily oblige and tell all that the gig on Friday night was
fantastic!

Is that boy talented or what? He played keyboard, moog synthesiser,
trumpet and flugel horn. He also has a very sweet singing voice and
apart from a couple of songs, he had written all the material himself.

The music is a mixture of thumping hard beats with melodic tunes that
got the crowd up dancing and cheering for more. He started with a
gentle rendition of "Pure Imagination" from the original Willie Wonka
film and then let rip with a great song written by himself that he
told me was called "The Amorist".

There were several songs from his album "Welcome to Jonnyland", a
couple of which you can here on his myspace.com/welcometojonnyland
site. There was a great rapport between Jon and the crowd and
they loved it when he played the theme music from tv's animation
series,"Rhubarb" as well as the music from chanel 4's "Deal, No Deal".
I know that sounds mad, but it really worked!

Dave Swift was majestic on bass and Theo Gordon and Harry Bennett from
Roots Manuva gave the gig a real edge.

For me, as a huge Jools fan, I was stunned to see two of my favourite
members of the orcherstra doing something so different. It was truly
amazing! I thought I was too old to get into music that I am
unfamiliar with but I had a fabulous night and would travel a fair
distance to see them again. I can't recommend the band highly enough.

Folks,

May I draw on the collected wisdom....

Down here in rural South-West France, one of the regular needs is
visiting the internet cafe to connect at high speed rather than
dialup. This morning, mine host was playing music as usual and had
the Small World, Big Band Volume 1 CD on. The Suggs track, Oranges
& Lemons came on.

This got a discussion going as to what was the meaning of Oranges &
Lemons, or to be precise, the line in the song which Suggs sings
which is "Turned out Oranges and Lemons again, three bags in a row"

My own research reveals the meaning behind the child's nursery rhyme
and that Oranges & Lemons was the name of a dance from 300 years
ago. But what does it mean in the modern context? Is it Cockey
Rhyming slang? And if so, for what? One (plausible) theory was
that in the nursery rhyme, it is the bells of St. Clements which
says Oranges and Lemons and "St. Clements" sounds like "inclement"
and he was merely talking about the weather!

Oh, the only other thing I seem to remember is that the song is
actually a tribute to Ian Dury.

Any ideas folks?

Thanks,
David

Wow, thanks Jane!! =P

It sounds fantastic, I really wish I could have been there... I'll
hopefully get to the next one though, do you know when that will be?
I've got the album and think it's brilliant so I guess I'd travel a
fair way to see him perform =P

I've met Jon a few times before and he seems like a great guy, his
music sure does reflect that!

Speak soon... Jane :]

It's "All three bells in a row" but I don't really know what it
means. It seems to be very much a song about London or Londoners,
or your hunch about Ian Dury fits the lyrics and that seems to be
what the BBC reviewer was told here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/classicpop/reviews/jools_small.shtml

There are a couple of good resources about the nursery rhyme here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oranges_and_Lemons
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A696125

Blimey, just seem the new Jools album cover! Is that a quick
cut'n'paste sample before they do the proper one...?!

Daryl

Hi all!

I have two tix for RAH and I'm heartbroken that I will
not be able to make it over to England to see Jools.
The same thing happened last year. I will not go into
details about what has thrown me off course again this
year. :-(

The tix I have are for December 2. Here's the info:

Dec 02 7:30 PM
Front Arena
Price Each: £ 38.00
Section: Arena F
Row: 7
Seat: 27,28
Quantity: 2
Sub-Total: £76.00

I am willing to sell the tickets separately or as a
pair. I would be more than happy to pay the shipping
costs to send them to whoever wants them. I'm selling
them at face value. Since I'm in the U.S. I guess you
could pay me via Paypal (please choose US dollars
under currency) or something like that. We can sort it
out later. :-)

This is first come, first serve.

Regards,

Clarisa

Would anybody have a copy of that documentary that they would be
willing to loan me to make a copy of.I was kinda busy dealing with a
sick son,but saw the last 10 minutes of it and was enjoying it alot.
Id be more than willing to sort something out to make it worth
the while,a wee donation to charity or something.

Tickets go on sale on the 21st of October and are priced as ˆ22,50 - ˆ 25,50.

Don’t know why there’s a price difference this year, just hope that this doesn’t mean it’s seated!!

Jools radio show on BBC Radio 2 last nite (2130 hrs) was one of the best and really funny. For those that missed it I'd suggest you have a listen again on BBC Radio 2's listen again section (they keep it for a week on there and take it off then!)

Chris Difford was Jools' special guest and as you know (or didn't) Jools, Chris, and Gilson was in the band Squeeze. It was great to hear Jools, Chris and Gilson talk about their Squeeze days and the stories were really funny.

Though I spend more time with Dave, Eunice, Clarisa and the Ladyboy in
another dimension. But also I suffer from the same old exploding
computer issue that has haunted my last year. Because of this I only
get online at work on my break on night shifts. The replies I generally
write either get timed out by the connection cos I sort of doze off or
I write something in a sarcastic tone cos I hate nights so I delete
it :o) (surely not, sarcasm, moi?) But I do have a regular look in here
just to see what is going on.

I'll say no more about anything else....

Oh except Eunice...the Amsterdam gig is but 2 days after my final lot

Hi everyone,

I have 2 tickets to the gig at the Ipswich Regent for sale.
Unfortunately I have a gig myself so won't be able to make it. They're
in the third row, but next to an aisle, so there aren't actually any
seats in front to block the view (or the pathway to get up and boogie!!)

Let me know if anyone is interested.
