Deffo sounds like an intermittent connection to me.
You could try to check the cable connecting the wheel with the board for
any trace of mechanical wear & tear and then proceed to measure the
resistance for any break in the wiring. After that, try to replace the
cable with another one to see if the problem is resolved.
