I just joined the Oldies Music Links Yahoo group
(http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/OldiesMusicLinks/).

Here's what the Oldies Music Links group is all about:

The Oldies Music Links Group is a Yahoo Group (founded in June 2002
now with 210 members) whose object is to share the wonderful music
from the 40's through 80's with other members, basically in one of two
ways ... posting links to sites which have music files, and uploading
our own music files into the Files section.

Members can post links to oldies music websites in a message, and then
add it to the Links page as well. The Oldies Music Links Group shares
members cool Yahoo groups with one another, too. Members are asked to
add the URL's into the Links page to the other oldies music Yahoo
groups in which they participate.

Members upload oldies music files to the Files page. Usually MP3s
which are easy to download. If the Files section becomes full (they
only allow you so much room), the Moderator begins eliminating the
oldest ones to make room for new ones.

The Group's Moderator hopes that as more and more members come in,
more music and links are added, which in turn will draw even more
members. That's the whole basis of the Oldies Music Links Group ...
to call attention to the wonderful music of the Babyboomer era.

I just posted a Link to http://www.rockradioscrapbook.com, a great
site put up by Dale Patterson. He has collected and posted an
extensive archive of airchecks (well known broadcast DJs, such as Alan
Freed, Hound Dog Lorenz, Dick Biondi, and many more, introducing songs
and talking, including advertisements) from 1955 to present. Also,
read rock radio historical information. Many of the airchecks are
from stations in Ontario and New York. Generally, the recordings
on the website are a few to 15 minutes long, and the center parts of
the songs are edited out, so most of the time is talk. I listened
carefully to the 1955-1970 airchecks, remembering why we spent so much
of our money (for me from 55-62 it was ALL my allowances) on records -
it was so time-consuming waiting and wondering when the good songs
would be played again. Dale Patterson has done a fabulous job with
the airchecks & history.
Nowadays, at least on KD Radio, we play the good songs non-stop.
KD Radio's Steve Ricketts has worked to get a pleasant balance of
music, talk, and ads.

Hi Don and all at KD Radio from Victor Harbor, South Australia.
I've only recently come across you on the Internet and love both the
variety of 'Ghost Towns Gold' (my terminology) and the variety of
eras portrayed. Also great to hear your WABC inspired KDSK jingles.
I work in commercial radio in Adelaide the capital of South
Australia and have worked both on & off-air now for 33 years. I
share my birthday with Howard Stern (!), we're both turning 51 on
January 12 and that's where the similarity starts & finishes in
every sense of the word.
Looking at the photos of your facility on the Net, I see (with
respect) old world technology....panels with 'pot' faders and
turntables etc. In reality, how much vinyl do you actually play
versus CD or Digital storage and is most of your broadcast equipment
from a bygone era ? I'm not knocking it in any way, shape or form
just very curious. Also, how much is automated/voice tracked ?
Yeah, I know what you're thinking "nosey Aussie", and you'd be right.
Keep up the fresh sounding and unique format and it's great to see
you're locally owned & operated. Best wishes and all the best for
2005 & beyond. IAN WRIGHT.

Hello Ian,
Great to hear from you. I'm starting to use the
Australian book "The Book: Top 40 Research" (of
Australian charts) to try to get more of you listeners
down under. Sounds like only Derek Lloyd has as much
commercial radio experience here as you do.
I'll ask Steve Ricketts to give a more proper
response to your facilities question. I think what
you see is what you get - I'm glad you haven't
noticed the records' scratches - that's often one of
my biggest concerns.

Thanks Don for your speedy reply and I look forward to hearing from
Steve re the KDSK facility when he has a moment. The book you
mention is a good one as it comprehensively covers the music/radio
scene of Australia's eastern seaboard from 1956 onwards. I own 2
versions, the original charting 1956-1977 and an updated 1956-1999
copy. Having been born in Sydney in '54 and starting in radio as a
trainee announcer/'gofer' in 1971 it really covers my musical
upbringing. Ironically, only this afternoon (South Australian time)
I had KD Radio quietly streaming on my PC at work and on came 60's
Oz rockers The Easybeats with their worldwide smash hit "Friday On
My Mind" ! Our planet & communications have certainly sped up over
the past 5 years and the Internet has taught me a lot about American
radio and made me feel more at home with your country, even though I
have never been there.

Many thanks again Don and if ever you want to hear one of the first
(and still one of my favourite) songs I played on the radio in '71,
try and dig up "Golden Miles" by a New Zealand band called Healing
Force, it's still a knockout that doesn't date, unlike myself !
Kind regards, IAN WRIGHT.

Ian and All,
Some KD Radio California studio equipment goes back decades. It's
continued usefulness has been a major cost-saving and source of
station "infrastructure". It was a staging point as KD Radio began to
use computers for various parts of the sound production process in the
late 1990s. Currently, about 70% of our vinyl music (i.e., 70% of the
record library) has been transferred to digital storage. It's that
digital storage that we use during most of the shows these days.

We do very little voice tracking. Most shows are either live or
generically pre-recorded for use on both KD Radio California and KD
Radio New Mexico.

The studio pictures on the website are old, and do not show the
computers. The RCA console in studio 2 shown on the website is
scheduled to be replaced with a new console in about 60 days.

Don, paraphrasing Steve on Dec 5, 2004.

Hello, I wanted to invite everyone to my Gary and the Hornets Yahoo
Group! Gary and the Hornets were from Franklin, Ohio; a town halfway
between Cincinnati & Dayton, and received a lot of radio airplay in
those markets in 1966 and 1967. In addition to "Hi Hi Hazel"
and "Patty Girl", they recorded the first version of "There's A Kind
of Hush" that I ever heard--months before Herman's Hermits' version.
The group consisted of the Calvert brothers, Gary (age 11 or 12 on
guitar and lead vocals, Greg (the oldest at 14 or 15) on bass, and
Steve(age 7 or 8) on drums. Please post any updates or photos of this
rare 1960's group!

Miami, FL -- One of the great groups discovered by Henry Stone, The 2 Live Jews, appears on VH1’s show “The Greatest: 40 Least Hip Hop Moments” courtesy of Joseph L. Stone. The show will first air on Saturday, April 30th at 1:00pm EST.

The 2 Live Jews started as a parody of the hot hip hop group 2 Live Crew. Their debut album, 1990's “As Kosher as They Wanna Be”, featured the rhyming skills of "Moisha MC" and "Easy Irving." These were two aged Jewish-American men who had ostensibly discovered a latent penchant for rocking the mike. In actuality, they were personas created in a studio by Joe Stone (Irving) andEric Lambert (Moisha), who were not even elderly.

The original Ray Charles recording of “Walkin’ and Talkin’” that was released on Henry Stone’s Rockin Records label in the 1950’s is being brought into the 21st Century with a great dance remix by Christian Dio, one of the industry’s top mixers. Dio has mixed for artists as Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys and Angie Stone.

While veteran music men Sam Weiss and Henry Stone were sunning themselves in Florida, their sons, Joe Stone and Michael Weiss, were brought together by record industry A&R man Hosh Gureli. They joined forces and organized this great project.

The remix will be released on Nervous Records for worldwide distribution. Look for this groundbreaking track to hit the streets immediately.

Webcasts and Podcasts are heard using the Internet. KDSK New Mexico
broadcasts over the air and webcasts on the Internet. KD Radio
California webcasts by feeding our signal to a company that
specializes in webcasting services. The most well known webcasting
service is Live 365, and it is relatively low cost for non-commercial
webcasters. You can create your programs on your PC, and send your
programs one-by-one (or stream them continuously) to a webcasting
service. Podcasting may be even lower cost for your purposes. Read
about Webcasting and Podcasting in the Wikipedia.

Interesting historical note (that Derek told me): The Acoma Tribe's
nearby mesa-top pueblo of Sky City is the oldest
continuously-inhabited community in North America, originally settled
(per some archeological estimate) about 1150 AD.

Folks,

I got an alert from Tim in Ohio, and found this week-old overlooked
email from our streaming service in my In Box. I hope this didn't
cause you much lost listening time.

THAT IS NOT CORRECT!

The KD Radio California link has NOT changed!!!!!

It is still http://wma.str3am.com/KDSK

The "KDSK2 link will take you to KD Radio New Mexico!!

There was about an 18 hour mix-up but it is corrected.
Our original server did crash and we are now on the
same server as our sister station...thus the
confusion.

KD Radio California
