Hi Dennis,

Great to hear from you...it seems like Jerry is going to have a lot of friends in KC. Mel Graves passed last Nov. so if we do have a reunion we have to find another bass player. Mel was a completely unique player and I miss him a great deal (he lived near me and we taught and played together for 25 years)!

The David Grisman Quintet played Bonaroo last month and had a great time. I myself play a lot of  “avant garde” or new music which I love. And I would love to play with Jerry again someday.  Did you know Manfred Mann covered a tune from the Brotherhood album: Martha’s Madman ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qq4Rg9nCb4I). I didn’t know about it until about twenty years later! They do a nice version but ours is better! ha

All the best,

George

Speaking of George Marsh...last summer (2008) I was working for one of the sound companies doing the Wakarusa Festival in Lawrence.  I was working the backline so I spent time setting up drums, amps, keyboards, etc.  We were setting up for David Grisman, and one couldn't help but notice the unusual kit the drummer was using (no bass drum).

Well, the skies opened up and we had a serious rain delay, so I spent some time backstage talking with the band (I didn't know any of them at the time).  One thing led to another, Mike Finnigan's name came up, the KMHoF came up, and finally George Marsh introduced himself.  Super nice guy, soft spoken, fabulous percussionist.

He explained who he was (I'm embarrased to say I wasn't all that hip to the Jerry Hahn Brotherhood back then...I guess I was too much into British Invasion and Psychedelic rock).  He said he was in fairly regular contact with Jerry. but they hadn't played together for a long time.  George has been in the northern Cal. area for a number of years now and teaches percussion at several colleges north of San Fran.

I mentioned that the KMHof induction would be a great place for a JH Brotherhood reunion, and he agreed.  We talked for a few more minutes, then he had to go on for his set and I had to go back to work.

George can be reached at marshdrum@..., or his web site marshdrum.com.   He gave me his business card, but I somehow lost it out at Wakarusa and just recently found it buried in my pickup.

I'm going to take a chance and CC George on this note.  He's probably up on Jerry's move to KC, but just in case he's not, this will clue him in.  Also, with Jerry close by, maybe we can get the Brotherhood to do a song or two at the next Induction.  The bass player's shoe's will be hard to fill, but I bet they could find a worthy replacement.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!    George, sorry it took so long to get back to you.   Hope all is well.

George Marsh - drums & Mel Graves - bass with Mike and Jerry were the originals.

Dano,
I know what you mean, too. I went home and burned the guitars, burned the drums, even gave the keyboards the evil eye. The harmonicas wouldn't burn. [I looked around for YOUR guitars, but could find none.]
He gave no reason for the move other than suggest the greener pastures were here. He didn't get much support in Wichita. Hope we can improve on that here. He would be a new found gem for KC.
He may have finished his contract for teaching and that could have prompted the move as well. It's the end of the school year, so that would make sense. Doesn't really matter. He's here now and Wichita's loss is KC's gain. Besides, there are several venues here that he could teach...including KU, I assume. UMKC would be the most probable as they have a program and several students have played at Jardines already.
Do you have any clue as to which Brotherhood guy died? We all know Finnegan is still going strong. Haven't heard much about the other two since the album came out in the early `70's.
It would be a real treat for all of us if you could get Jerry to play at the next KMHoF induction. He'd be a lot closer and if he could get those guys he played with Sunday to play with him, well...I'd be happy if you'd just let them play the whole night. But, one set would sure keep me grinning for a long time. You, too, I'll bet.
Who knows? Maybe Finnegan would show up just for old times. Although Joe Cartwright would probably give him a run at who was the best keyboard guy on stage that night. Hmmmmmm..... ..

> Jerry was playing with Joe Cartwright on piano, Bob Bowman on bass, and a very tasty and imaginative drummer whose name escapes me. Jerry was at the top of his game and the other players stepped it up to his level. These "other players" are the best in KC and Jerry acknowledged his joy of playing with such talented guys.
