Last weekend I took a big step and was married to my soul mate Lynn.  The wedding was here in Beloit at the Country Club as was the reception.   The evening was total bliss and was topped off with a very lively dance featuring the "Blue Healers" from Hays, Ks.   This is yet another Hays group that follows in a long order of great musicians from that part of the state.  It was mine and Lynn's night and our feet never stopped moving from the first to the last note played.

As if that's not enough I also retired from my life-long job at Sunflower Mfg. Co.  I had been there 39 1/2 years.  The economy prompted a lay-off of 50 people and so during this process the company was offering early retirement packages, so I jumped at the chance to leave and start a new beginning.

I look forward to finishing many projects I have had in mind to do over the last five or six years and to further my musical career with friends and bandmates.

For now Lynn and I are still riding the wave and the next two weeks seem pretty busy, but once the dust settles I'll have some time on my hands to do what I want to do and that's important.

Lynn & I just wanted to share our happiness with you all..

Ever since I first heard of Eric's passing, I've been thinking about how much I enjoyed playing the Alan Parsons Project when I was doing AOR radio in the 70s. While I have enjoyed music of all formats, those days and that music bring back special memories.

Here's an update on Kerry Livgren, a video from Topeka Bible Church. Kerry & Vicci give their testimony of the experience they've had since his stroke and what the possibility of not continuing in music means. They're the second testimony, about 6 minutes into the video: http://www.topekabiblechurch.org/services/sunday.../sermons/978-abcs-of-thanksgiving

HOW TO SING THE BLUES ... by Stretch Melon Clinton

1. Most Blues begin, "Woke up this morning."

2. "I got a good woman" is a bad way to begin the Blues, 'less you
stick something nasty in the next line, like "I got a good woman, with the
meanest face in town."

3. The Blues is simple. After you get the first line right, repeat
it. Then find something that rhymes ... sort of: "Got a good woman -
with the meanest face in town. Got teeth like Margaret Thatcher - and she
weigh 500 pound."

4. The Blues are not about choice. You stuck in a ditch, you stuck in
a ditch; ain't no way out.

5. Blues cars: Chevys and Cadillacs and broken-down trucks. Blues
don't travel in Volvos, BMWs, or Sport Utility Vehicles. Most Blues
transportation is a Greyhound bus or a southbound train. Jet
aircraft an' state-sponsored motor pools ain't even in the running. Walkin'
plays a major part in the blues lifestyle. So does fixin' to die.

6. Teenagers can't sing the Blues. They ain't fixin' to die yet.
Adults sing the Blues. In Blues, "adulthood" means being old enough to get
the electric chair if you shoot a man in Memphis.

7. Blues can take place in New York City but not in Hawaii or any
place in Canada. Hard times in St. Paul or Tucson is just depression.
Chicago, St.Louis, and Kansas City still the best places to have the Blues.
You cannot have the blues in any place that don't get rain.

8. A man with male pattern baldness ain't the blues. A woman with
male pattern baldness is. Breaking your leg cuz you skiing is not
the blues. Breaking your leg cuz an alligator be chomping on it is.

9. You can't have no Blues in an office or a shopping mall. The
lighting is wrong. Go outside to the parking lot or sit by the dumpster.

10. Good places for the Blues:
            a. highway
            b. jailhouse
            c. empty bed
            d. bottom of a whiskey glass

            Bad places:
            a. Ashrams
            b. gallery openings
            c. Ivy League institutions
            d. golf courses

11. No one will believe it's the Blues if you wear a suit, 'less
you happen to be an old ethnic person, and you slept in it.

12. Do you have the right to sing the Blues? Yes, if:
             a. you're older than dirt
             b. you're blind
             c. you shot a man in Memphis
                        d. you can't be satisfied
             No, if:
             a. you have all your teeth
             b. you were once blind but now can see
             c. the man in Memphis lived.
             d. you have a retirement plan or trust fund.

13. Blues is not a matter of color. It's a matter of bad luck.
Tiger Woods cannot sing the blues. Gary Coleman could. Ugly white people
also got a leg up on the blues.

14. If you ask for water and Baby give you gasoline, it's the Blues.
           Other acceptable Blues beverages are:
             a. wine
             b. whiskey or bourbon
             c. muddy water
             d. black coffee

The following are NOT Blues beverages:
             a. mixed drinks
             b. kosher wine
             c. Snapple
             d. sparkling water

15. If it occurs in a cheap motel or a shotgun shack, it's a Blues
death. Stabbed in the back by a jealous lover is another Blues way
to die. So is the electric chair, substance abuse, and dying lonely on a
broken down cot. You can't have a Blues death if you die during a tennis
match or while getting liposuction.

16. Some Blues names for women:
             a. Sadie
             b. Big Mama
             c. Bessie
             d. Fat River Dumpling

17. Some Blues names for men:
              a. Joe
              b. Willie
              c. Little Willie
              d. Big Willie

18. Persons with names like Sierra, Sequoia, Auburn, and Rainbow
can't sing the Blues no matter how many men they shoot in Memphis.

19. Make your own Blues name (starter kit):
              a. name of physical infirmity (Blind, Cripple, Lame, etc.)
              b. first name (see above) plus name of fruit (Lemon, Lime,
                      Kiwi, etc.)
              c. last name of President (Jefferson, Johnson, Fillmore,
                      etc.)
For example, Blind Lime Jefferson, or Cripple Kiwi Fillmore, etc.
                                       (Well, maybe not "Kiwi.")

20. I don't care how tragic your life: you own a computer, you
cannot sing the blues. You best destroy it. Fire, a spilled bottle of
Mad Dog, or get out a shotgun. Maybe your big woman just done sat on it.
I don't care.

Thanks, Dawayne, for the links on the Stein and Salina information.  I have long had an interest in community bands.  Back in 1985, my article on the MK&T RR Band of Parsons was published by the Katy Railroad Historical Society.  I had the privilege of interviewing a couple of the early band members who were members from 1914 through the 1940's.  The most noted director of the MK&T Band was William E. Thomasson and he, like Stein, penned a couple of marches.  One was entitled "Come and Take A Ride With Me" which became the official marching song for the MK&T Railroad.  He was eventually appointed Supervisor of Bands, MKT Lines."  A published account of the band traveling to Sedalia, MO in 1924 stated that Thomasson wrote and performed a march entitled "The Missouri State Fair."  To this day I have been unable to find a copy of it in any form.  So, the article you linked us to gives hope that sometimes some long lost music can be discovered again.

Thanks for the links Dawayne.  I had heard about the Stein's but wasn't aware of all of this.  My band Original Sin played a couple of benefits in the park at the gazeebo to help drum up money for the new Oakdale stage.  I have also played on the Oakdale stage the first year of it's existence.  There is a bronze plaque somewhere on the stage that names Original Sin along with others as helping that great cause.
It's an awesome stage to perform on.

We'll have to really try and remember Pagan Ballet or the Stein's for next years nominees

http://www.salina. com/entertainmen t/story/Salina- Municipal- Band-7-31

Band formed in 1884

The Salina Municipal Band was formed in 1884 from a combination of three other brass bands performing in the area. The combined band became the Fourth Regiment Band under the direction of Walter Packard.

In 1895, the Fourth Regiment Band was renamed the Salina Military Band and was primarily a marching band at parades and city events. In 1914, it was renamed the Salina Municipal Band under the direction of Salinan Tom Howell.

C.F. Lebow became its director 10 years later.

The director with the longest reign was Eric Stein, who also conducted the Salina Symphony. Stein spent 44 years with the Municipal Band before stepping down in 2004. He died in 2007, and the stage at Oakdale Park was named after him.

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed an Armistice Day for November 11,
1919. The United States Congress passed a concurrent resolution seven years
later on June 4, 1926, requesting the President issue another proclamation to
observe November 11 with appropriate ceremonies.

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U.S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the
11th of November in each year a legal holiday; "a day to be dedicated to the
cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice
Day'."

In 1953, an Emporia, Kansas shoe store owner named Al King had the idea to
expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who served in
World War I.

King had been actively involved with the American War Dads during World War II.
He began a campaign to turn Armistice Day into "All" Veterans Day.

The Emporia Chamber of Commerce took up the cause after determining that 90% of
Emporia merchants as well as the Board of Education supported closing their
doors on November 11, 1953, to honor veterans.

With the help of then-U.S. Rep. Ed Rees, also from Emporia, a bill for the
holiday was pushed through Congress. President Dwight Eisenhower signed it into
law on May 26, 1954.

Congress amended this act on November 8, 1954, replacing "Armistice" with
Veterans, and it has been known as Veterans Day since.
