Asperges Me Domine is apt for the Easter season and if its 90 degrees in the shade could be a call for a cooling mist. A man for all seasons.

Hmmm. Just did "Fire, Fire" in a concert with the University of Illinois at Springfield Chorus last night.

I don't suppose that's the one you're considering? I already know the Bass line. ;-)

Our madrigal choir did Fire Fire one year ( I was with them for three years).  It's a GREAT song!  Loved it!  I'd definitely recommend it as it is fun to perform and at least equally fun to listen to.

I just learned "Fire, Fire" for a local chorus and suspect this piece may be dropped from the too-lengthy program before we can perform it. I would be glad if it were chosen for Pennsic.

Robin -- my friend who sings early music, is giving concerts next week.
She passed me this information.

I will post it to the SCA lists but I don't know if I can attach the
poster.... so sending you one with a copy of the poster.

     * Amasa-Stone Chapel, CWRU campus, Thursday, 4/22/10, 8 pm. Donation

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's the first paragraph from the program notes, to give folks a sense
of what the concert is about:

Women are portrayed very rigidly in the traditional (male-authored)
courtly love literature: a lady is virtuous, demanding, and
unattainable --- and usually complained about either for withholding
her affection or for granting it. These women are more like the
figures in stained-glass windows than real people. However, women
also contributed to this literature, and their self-portrayals are
more varied. It is these women that I wanted to show. The powerful
Comtessa de Dia states plainly her desire to sleep with someone other
than her husband (``Estat ai en greu cossirier'') and advises women not
to worry about court gossips (``Ab ioi et ab ioven m'apais''). Clara
d'Anduza rages about her lack of power: her husband prevents her from
seeing her beloved. And Na Castelloza is neurotic, stealing a man's
glove and pretending that he has given her his token (``Ia de chantar
non degra aver talan''). Women are lusty (``Quant ce vient en mai ke
rose est panie'') and vain (``Ab greu cossire et ab greu marrimen'').
They grieve (``Bele Doette,'' ``Ab lo cor trist environat d'esmay'')
and, possibly, court other women (``Na Maria'').

Hello, I was wondering if there is a problem with registering for the choir this
year? I went to the Pennsicwar.org site and tried to register for this year's
choir and I kept getting pop-ups when I tried to click on the link.
Also is there going to be downloads of the music online to practice before
Pennsic.

If anyone can give me some information that would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Folks,

Lots of things are happening:

- I expect to have music selection completed this week with sheet music and
learning tracks to be posted immediately thereafter. I've been enjoying the
discussions in this group and am still open to suggestions. I have no particular
theme in mind this year other than it helps if the pieces are somewhat known (so
have stood the test of time) but not TOO well known (so we aren't tired of them)

- Rehearsals and the performance are scheduled as follows (all in the Performing
Arts tent):

8/5, 8/6, 8/7, 8/8, 8/9, 8/11 - 3:00-5:00pm
8/10 - 4:15-6:15pm
8/12 (dress rehearsal) - 1:00-3:00pm
8/13 (concert) - 6:00-7:00pm

I have the Performing Arts tent reserved longer on most days (usually 2-5) in
case we want to have an occasional sectional or whatever. Try to keep that 2-3
slot open in your schedule if possible, but no 3 hour choir rehearsals!

We are also listed as a class in Pennsic U...

- I'm working on getting the registration process setup through the
Pennsicwar.org webpage. Stay tuned for more info on that!

- Master Li Kung Lo and Mistress Ygraine of Kellswood have agreed to record the
concert and produce the CD again (or at least the Dress Rehearsal).

I have no plans in place yet for a video recording. Suggestions?

Thanks for your patience, I expect we will have a great time this summer.

Folks,

The music for Pennsic 39 has been posted!

But first, through a series of typos, I gave the wrong date for the concert.
Here is the corrected rehearsal and performance schedule:

8/5 (Th), 8/6 (F), 8/7 (Sa), 8/8 (Su), 8/9 (M), 8/11 (W) - 3:00-5:00pm
(Performing Arts Pavilion)
8/10 (T) - 4:15-6:15pm (Performing Arts Pavilion)
8/11 (W) - "teaser" performance during "Midnight Madness" - about 8pm
8/12 (Th) (dress rehearsal) - 1:00-3:00pm (Performing Arts Pavilion)
8/12 (Th!!) (concert) - 6:00-7:00pm (Performing Arts Pavilion)

The music is this:

Ave Maria - Josquin (4 part version)
Fine Knacks for Ladies - Dowland
Il est bel et bon - Passereau
Innsbruck, ich muss dich lassen - Isaac
Matona Mia Cara - di Lasso
Musica dulci sono - de Rore ("Music is a sweet sound from the heavens....")
O Salutaris Hostia - de La Rue
Weep O Mine Eyes - Bennet

And still maybe a surprise or two...

All the sheet music is up as well as midi files. I will start working on singing
learning tracks with proper pronunciations which should help the learning
process go quicker. If you need something other than midi files (like mp3's or
your part predominant) let me know.

The registration page should be active very soon and I will announce when that
is ready as well.

Finally, I think it's worthwhile to hear some good recordings of these songs to
get an idea how they can (and should?) sound.... :-)

The first one (probably most unknown of the bunch) is "Musica dulci sono".
Amazon.com has an MP3 of the Hilliard Ensemble doing this song - $.89 for the
download. Search for "Musica dulci sono"....

Very much looking forward to this summer,

Robyn

Go to www.pennsicwar.org:

- or get there from the Site Directory (below "Registration")

- or from the Cultural Affairs front page (use the "A&S" button along the top of

The trick, I think, is to have music that is 'bouncy' and 'upbeat' without
being too overwhelming.

Naxos as a label has a lot of good period music recordings, listed as 'Early
Music*Alte Musik'. Some recordings from Naxos I would recommend:

Chominciamento di gioia; Virtuoso dance-music from the time of Boccaccio's
Decamerone - Ensemble Unicorn - DDD 8.553131

Carmina Burana (Medieval poems and songs) - Ensemble Unicorn / Michael Posch
/ Ensemble Oni Wytars / Marco Ambrosini - DDD 8.554837 (note, this is NOT
the Orff composition)

At the Sign of the Crumhorn; Flemish Songs and Dance Music from the Susato
Music Books - Convivium Musicum Gothernburgense / Sven Berger / Andreas
Edlund - DDD 8.554425

Codex Faenza; Instrumetal Music of the Early XVth Century - Ensemble Unicorn
/ Michale Posch - DDD 8.553618

Other labels:

Sinfonye's "Amydde The Karole For To Daunce" - on the Authentica label of
Tring International Plc. Item code seems to be AS 003

"Minstrel Songs And Dances for a Medieval Banquet" - I HIGHLY recommend
this, for general SCA purposes as well as for what you are doing. It was
released by a British chain store called Past Times (they sell historical
'stuff' - reproductions, etc.) I don't know if they 'onsell' their CDs to
other stores, but their website is www.pasttimes.com. My copy is c.1994; I
don't know if they are still selling it. Order code on the disc is PT 1828

"Music of The Tudor Age", released by Soundalive Music on their Music
Treasures Series, is another good, general music CD. Code is SAMMT/CD/104

Hopefully that's of some use to you. Good luck!

Folks,

Due to file size limitations in the Yahoo group I created a new website for
posting the sheet music, MIDI files, and singing learning tracks. Please find it
at:

sites.google.com/site/kwchoir2010

email me at dsrubin1@... if something doesn't work

All of the MIDI tracks are up, and the first couple of singing learning tracks
(more as I finish them).

Thanks to those of you who have registered already (15), but only 2 tenors and 1
bass so far! Please talk this up with your local singers, it should be a fun
choir and concert...

Robyn

Closer to the end of July would you be able to provide a rough count of the
number of members registered for the Choir

Thanks

Hello again good folk,

hope you are all well and enjoying the lead-up to this year's Pennsic and choir
experience! One of these days I'll get back there....

Meanwhile. Thanks to my mom digging through piles of old VHS videos at my
brother's house, I have some more Pennsic Choir archival footage to share.
There are some moments from XX and XXI, and then one more Chartres piece.

I will try to keep uploading what I can - it's all digitized now, just takes a
while to get onto YouTube.

Anyone with info on faces in the video please feel free to post on the YouTube
comment area... it'd be cool to hear what you're all up to these days!

Enjoyed going through the memories - be well,

Quick question....

Have the section leaders been chosen?
Could you tell us who they are?

Thank you

sure...registration is still running a bit slow, but it's early. Aren't we all
procrastinators at heart?
