So, are you looking for a necklace with an alto clef
charm on it? Are you interested in having one made?

I can do one, cast in sterling silver for ya!

I looked around on all the most popular music "stuff"
pages. I found 2 that had other types for viola
players,

I have a friend in the Barony of Twin Moons, Atenveldt, who is an excellent bone carver.  If he had a picture, I'm sure he could make one for you, too.  I have no idea of price.  It depends on what type of bone.  I'll have to get back to you about what his website is called.  I can't for the life of me remember.  His work is beautiful.

I am ashamed to admit that I have "done" music all my life.  Piano, flute, tenor and baritone sax, recorder, theory, and voice lessons.  Been in choirs, "etc., etc., etc." (to quote Rodgers and Hammerstein  in The King and I).  And yet I never knew an alto or C clef existed.  I am embarrassed.  Thank you for teaching me something new.

the alto or tenor clef is one of the original clefs.
It denotes the Ut or C on the staff. Being an early
musician......I read it well although I don't play the
viola.

My original idea is a C clef that is about the same size as my current G clef.
Other than that, I'm open for whatever grabs by fancy.

What would you charge?  Let me know.

Well, let's see. To make one charm of an Alto clef would be the
same amount of work pretty much to make a few, just for
instance.... I'd have to make the mold for the castings, and
then to cast them is the easiest.
The end cost for a sterling silver charm for a neclace,
let's say might end up being between $25-$35 each and thats
pretty much materials/silver only.

I've never done a clef before!!

I'm trying to find any decent copy of Tempus Adest Floridum from Piae Cantiones.  I'm planning to perform it at Regional A&S on the 30th, and a copy of the music would be so cool...

I found a website in Denmark that has facsimilies, but TAF didn't seem to be part of it.

Everyone in the world seems to reference it, but I'm having a bugger of a time trying to find it!

Seems like when Niamh  (hi, Niamh!) began her search for C-clef jewelry, someone on the list mentioned being a bit timid about learning to read the movable clefs.  I suspect this may apply to many of us.

I have an idea for how to learn C-clef.  Get lots of good old music written on a four-line staff.  Chant works well for this, but there's plenty of other stuff out there as well.  Play through it all on the instrument of your choice (in your closet, if you're shy....).  What the four-line staff does is eliminate all preconceptions about "lines" and "spaces", because there just aren't enough of them.  C is wherever it says it is.  It literally forces you to relearn how to read music.

This will also help improve your vocal sight-reading as well.  Yeah, I see you rolling your eyes, but it really will, because it makes you think of *intervals* rather than lines-and-spaces.  You get good at reading intervals, and you can sight-read a cappella vocal music lots easier, and impress your friends (to say nothing of your director).

How I learned to read the C-clefs, well, back when I was a college student, I went to early-music rehearsal one day.  Dr. A. handed me an alto recorder and asked, "Do you play F fingerings?"  I said, "No."  He pointed to the second line of music.  "Do you read C-clef?"  I said, "No."  He said, "One, two, three...."  Cruel man.

Hi, Elfrida!  Call me!  539-2038.  We should get together!  You should come to Southern Oaken A&S this weekend!  I'm doing Tempus adest Floridum!

While I am comfortable with G and C Clef, when I took up harp I had to tackle the dreadded (as opposed to dredded - for all of you who know Sir Ustad) F clef!  I had successfully avoided that clef for many many years...all to no avail.

It was slow going, and that old dog / new trick stuff kept rearing it's ugly head...

Good gentles,

I think I was the one with questions about the alto clef.  Can I assume that the little doohicky between the two backward C's comes to a point on whatever line is going to be C?  (Boy, I should REALLY have paid more attention in music theory class...)  I can see that if C is always changing its position on the staff from song to song, one could get better at sight reading.

Correct. The same is true of tenor clef, which uses the same clef
symbol as the alto but locates it a third higher on the staff. Here's
a website with a nice graphic illustrating the alto clef's placement.

Amy Marie,

Don't feel sheepish. I didn't even know there WERE other clefs. And I
thought my 12 years of piano lessons had taught me music...

I'm learning a lot, thank you, everyone, for the explanations.

I always thought of it as a fancy 3, but yes - the center point is C.  That's why it's so handy!  You can move it anywhere and know where C is.

Thank you for your kind education about the clefs and for not making fun of my ignorance. <grin>  The older I get, the more I find to learn.  And unlike primary, secondary, and college, I now enjoy learning for the sake of learning (instead of only to get A's).  Boy, that German saying my family used to quote IS TRUE:  "Too soondt oldt and too late schmart."  <another grin>

Oh, fear not, they weren't wasted. I've read that kids who learn piano
see improvement across the board academically, especially in math. One
study compared kids who studied piano, others who learned computer
keyboarding skills and a third group who learned a non-keyboard musical
instrument. The pianists won on cognitive development tests, hands
down.

My 9-year old is in his second year of piano and we've found another
surprising benefit. He has learned to sing on pitch, which he didn't
do very well until he learned piano.

So even if you've lost the muscle memory to play piano two-handed, you
can console yourself that you've gained other things from the
experience!

Hello all.. things are progressing nicely for this year's program. I
admit, I am working a little more slowly that in years past... when
I've had programs and music ready like in FEBRUARY... but this year is
a little different. I will have music ready to be sent by the end of
May AND I will include some files here on this page. In addition,.. I
hope to have the KnownWorldChoir.org up and running.... it's taking a
little while longer than anticipated.

We are getting registrations every day for Pennsic and its GREAT. I
am looking forward to directing this year.......the ALL JOSQUIN
year!!

Keep checking back here to see new messages and keep updated.

Known World Choir
Greetings from Lady Erlandr Nordskald, Director of the Known World
Choir at Pennsic.
This year's Known World Choir program features the music of Josquin
DezPrez, in honor of the 555th year of his birth. We will be
rehearsing a few of the famous Mass movements, L'Homme, his
Frottola's, and the 24 voice Motet, in addition to other favorites.

Those interested in singing with the Choir should be able to read
music or at least fake it pretty well. A familiarity with Renaissance
Vocal music is a must, even if it's only something that you only
dreamed about doing.

All singers need to register and receive music prior to coming to
Pennsic and may do so by contacting Erlandr. If there is room for
more voices at war, then we will accept them gladly, especially if
you're a tenor.

We did the 24-part piece under Mistress Josselyne way back at Pennsic
19 or 20. I had the privilege of being on part 1 - no pressure, no
pressure! :-) Loved every minute of it. The architecture guild made
the barn into Chartres Cathedral for our concert...what an amazing
performance that was!

I was there as well. I do remember the Cathedral.
Jocely was only suposed to take a 2 year hiatus,.. and
here we are now....11 years later!!!

I have reservations actually about doing Qui Habitat,
only because it's probably not Josquin's. There is a
lot of music attributed to him but is actually NOT
his. In themost recent editing of his works, not the
Smijther's (sp) edition, it is included in the list of
works "most NOT likely" to be his.. so.. I might not
include it.

and of course you can get music no matter what. .More
details on this to follow........

I was there, too, on Sop 6.  What an amazing piece of music.  What a cool set!  I'd love to be a part of singing that one again.  With that many people singing the piece, in the middle of the song the whole piece suddenly takes on a life of its own.  The Barn was so silent after the end of that song that you could hear a pin drop.  My husband described his experience listening to the piece:

"That was phenomenal--I thought the Rapture had happened and angels had come for me because that's the kind of music you'd hear in heaven"

I consider that performance my favorite, of my entire singing career,
believe it or not. :-) We were awesome, the music was awesome, the
audience was awesome...I'll never forget the feeling I had as we
exited the barn, singing chant, lining up outside to wait for the
audience's reaction. You're right; one could hear a pin drop in the
silence following our exit. The tumultuous applause and hooting just
frosted the cake!

There was a blonde lade from Settmour Swamp who said her husband
taped it...could that be you? I'd dearly love to acquire a copy
somehow...

KWC schedule:
http://www.pennsicwar.org/penn34/AANDS/choir.html

Performing arts Pavillion Schedule:

http://www.pennsicwar.org/penn34/AANDS/center.html#schedule

I have music and it might be ready in oh, I'd say
about a week.

at the moment the line up is:

Ave Maria (6 pt - SSAATB)
  - same initial phrase as the 4 part (sol - do) but a
little different and heavier on the female ability.

Tu pauperum refugium (SATB and recorder)
(always wanted to do this one)

Mass sections are Kyrie from Pange Lingua (SATB) and
the GLORIA from Dux Ferrarie (hardly EVER done) (SATB)

Absalon fili mi (SATB) and ONLY if we have the bass
power to pull it off.

Ell Grillo (SATB)
Scaramella (SATB)

MAYBE the 4 part L'homme arme) problem with that is
it's in the middle category of possibly NOT by
Josquin.

Ile Fantazies De Josquin (reocrder)
Mon Mary M'A Diffamee (recorder and smaller group
female voices)

De Tous Biens Plaine (recorders)

I am including some recorder / vocal things and will
be doing separate recorder sessions for any one
interested or if you know someone.

Keep checking this group listing for updated ...
stuff.

PS, We need tenors and basses... start recruiting. I
might need to put together a war chest full of booty
if we get desperate!!

Thanks

Erlan

I know I'm not the only recorder player on this list (Hi, Arianna!),
but you can certainly add me to those interested (at least for the
pieces that don't need vocal tenors). I can play bass, alto, soprano
or sopranino (no tenor recorder, sorry).

Gee, Richard, thanks a lot for "outing" me! :-S Yeah, I play recorder,
or at least I used to, and I do have a tenor, soprano, and alto though
it's been so long since I've played alto I'm sure I've forgotten my F
fingerings. If you're short of players I might be able to participate.

My primary issue would be scheduling rehearsals around child care.
Since the 4-6 pm choir practices don't conflict with battles, my
husband and I can juggle the kids reasonably well, but at other times
I'd have to bring them with me (and probably let them bring the
normally-forbidden Gameboys) or find someone else to watch them.
