Current count:

13 sopranos (8 1sts, 5 2nds)
13 altos
7 tenors
2 basses

As you can imagine, if you CAN sing a lower part (especially tenor to bass, and
then alto to tenor) I will ask you to do that.

And if you know of a singer coming to the war that can sing one of the lower
parts but is not planning to sing with us, please do some friendly 'arm
twisting'. The ability to read music is not a requirement, nor is 100% rehearsal
attendance (if there are good reasons to miss one or two).

And for those of you planning on singing with us but haven't yet registered -
please do so ASAP so I can get an idea of where we stand.

I just sent an email to all of the people I received a registration from (except
the one or two people who didn't include emails). If you think you registered
but didn't get anything from me - you might try registering again.

Finally - I am working on finishing and posting SUNG learning tracks. I had to
create a new group due to space limitations, so join KWChoir41 to download those
mp3s. Some are up now and they will be going up gradually as I finish them.

Thanks, and see you all in a few weeks!

lol - thanks. Those are recorded with Judith Overcash on soprano1 and 2 (she
will likely be singing with us at Pennsic) and me on the other parts. :-)

"Sumer is icumin in" sung tracks are posted to KWChoir41. Couple of things:

- Pay close attention to the melody - it is likely NOT exactly as you know it
(more on that at the war)
- It's not sung in the key as written. We will experiment a bit at the
war to see what works best
- Won't necessarily be women on melody and men on the pez
- Use the pronunciations as on the sung tracks. We will try to get a written
pronunciation guide done as well....

Hello,
This message is mostly for our director, gut input on propriety is welcomed
(since i don't want to be "that guy")
Originally I thought we would have an extra family member at war to help me
wrangle my 4 year old.
With that in mind, i had planned to join the Known world choir. As it turns out,
I will be the sole kid care technician this year.
is there a possibility that Wolfie could accompany me to rehearsals if I have
care for him during our real performance? He is used to hanging out at
performing arts guild meetings and church choir rehearsals, but he is just 4
years old, and I might have to step away with him on occasion.
I have a low female voice (usually alto, but I can sing tenor or soprano),
oodles of enthusiasm, and some experience singing polyphonic music .

In my experience the SCA has been very 'family friendly' and I see no reason the
KWC should be any different. As long as he doesn't become a distraction....and
feel free to step away as needed. Better to have you there 80% of the time or so
than not at all!

A couple of classes I'm teaching/facilitating/hanging-on-for-dear-life at
Pennsic that should be of interest to this crowd - that did NOT make the booklet
(even though they were registered on time! grrrr)

Drop-in Madrigal singing

8/2 (Th) and 8/5 (Su) at 12:00 PM in the Performing Arts Pavilion (bring your
lunch!).

Description: Bring your "Oxford Book of Madrigals" and sing your favorite
madrigals. This is a participatory class purely for the enjoyment of singing our
favorites in a low pressure setting. A limited amount of sheet music will be
available to borrow at the class.

Last time I ran this it was people saying "Let's sing "April is in My Mistress
Face' " (or whatever their favorite) then we would open our books/flip through
our sheet music, assign parts and sing it. Sometimes we would do it again even
trying other voice parts. Laugh and celebrate, then off to the next one. Great
fun was had by all.

Sing the Known World Choir top 10

8/3 (F) and 8/6 (M) at 12:00 PM in the Performing Arts Pavilion (bring your
lunch again!).

Description: The Known World Choir organizing group has selected 10 standard
(and relatively easy) period pieces that would make a great starting place for
your local vocal group. Come to this class and read through the songs to both
see what they are and get some experience with them. Packets of music will be
available to take home. Handout Fee: $3.00

Great class to kickstart your home group, find new rep for your group, and learn
common repertoire you can sing with any SCA chorister whenever you are together.

See you at the war!

All your classes are on the Pennsic University Schedule Maker at this address:

http://pennsic.flame.org/

I had to order another copy of the Oxford because mine is in a box at school and I think they're waxing my floor.

The scheduler sends an alert to your phone if you "watch" a class.  Check it out!

So...it has taken me a long time to make up my mind, but I've finally decided
what piece I'm going to conduct for the Pennsic 41 Known World Choir! It is:
"Todos Los Bienes" by Juan del Encina, one of the many many pieces in the
collection called the "Cancionero de Palacio" from early 1500's Spain. (More
info about the collection at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancionero_de_Palacio
)

I'll be working on the vocal mp3 files soon, and I know Robyn is going to help
with that, but in the meantime, feel free to take a look/listen to the sheet
music and midis in their respective folders at:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/KWChoir/files/Pennsic%2041/

The midis are just a hair faster in tempo than what we will do (I may change the
files soon; if I do, I'll put a note so you'll know it's the "new" slower
version).

Can't wait to see you all at rehearsal!

Thanks for your patience,

Eliane

The Top 10 survey landed here:

Pastime with Good Company (Attributed to Henry VIII)
Sumer is icumen in (Anonymous)
Alle Psallite (Anonymous)
Ah Robin (Cornysh)
Sing We and Chant It (Morley)
Stella Splendens (Anonymous)
There Were Three Ravens (Ravenscroft)
Belle Qui Tient Ma Vie (Arbeau
Tanzen und Springen (Hassler)
Remember, O Thou Man (Ravenscroft)

"Now is the Month of Maying" also was in there, but two Morley madrigals seemed
a bit too much.

That's a pretty good list with wide range of easy to not-so-easy songs, and
should keep any of us pretty interested.

I'll work on identifying some good editions, post them somewhere eventually, and
bring copies to the war.

Greetings from Barbara Krege, Society Deputy for Family and Youth Programs,

For those of you attending Pennsic, there are lots of classes and activities for the children, youth, teens, their families and those who work with our youth.

I have created and attached a two page schedule with a listing of all of these classes and activities.

There are four European dance classes especially for the children and youth (12-1pm on 8/1-8/4), followed by a Dance Revel (Ball) especially for them on Saturday, August 4 (5-7pm).

Lady Erlan is directing the first ever Youth Choir for Pennsic, with 8 rehearsals (8/2-8/9) and some performances.

Please forward this document to your other discussion lists.

For this song - please learn the choir I parts (although choir I and II are
identical, just delayed). There is a small group aleady tapped to sing the choir
II parts.

Thanks,

Robyn

With Master Robyn's permission, here's a link to a hosting site to go find all the learning tracks and the sheet music. You must download them to your computer to play them. This is just for storage purposes.

I will add Todos as it becomes available.

That would be a good idea so we will all be singing from the same page, so to speak.

The sopranos would not see much of a difference, but a 3 part version vs a 4 or 5 part version can be harder on the men trying to learn their parts.  And no singing group can afford to discourage the men from joining in and singing.

Greetings all!

In our efforts to expand the choral offerings at Pennsic, the Known World Choir Board of Directors is inaugurating a new choir at Pennsic this year! As yet unnamed, it will consist of a small group of people who are a) up for a challenge, and b) able to learn the music on their own and be ready to work on nuance rather than notes when they arrive at Pennsic.

Because we wanted to get it up and running quickly, this year's group was selected from people who have been involved in choral music throughout the Known World and are known to the KWC Board. The small choir will perform in conjunction with the full Pennsic Choir on Thursday evening. In case you were wondering, the smaller choir will be singing the "echo" part of di Lasso's Echo Song. I am directing the small choir this year.

BUT! For future Pennsics, we would like to make positions in the small choir open to anyone who is interested. To that end, we will be holding auditions in the Amphitheater, located behind the bathhouse, on the last Friday of Pennsic from noon to 2pm.

Bring a piece to perform (yes, it's fine if you want to sing your part from one of the pieces the Pennsic Choir is performing this year, and no, it doesn't have to be a period piece, though we prefer something stylistically compatible). You will also be asked to sight-sing a line in your range. We'll have a recorder to provide starting pitches, but you can bring your own instrument if you prefer.

This group will hold four rehearsals of one hour each, daily beginning the middle Sunday of Pennsic, plus a dress rehearsal with the full choir on Thursday. Those rehearsals will not conflict with the full choir, so you *can* do both - indeed, we encourage you to do so!

Can't make it to Pennsic, or aren't available to attend the audition on the 10th? No worries. You can record yourself singing and then email the file to me. I recognize that you won't be able to do the sight-singing portion.

Decisions about membership in the small choir, which will comprise up to 16 people plus an alternate for each voice part, will be announced in the fall.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I look forward to singing with you!

Arianna of Wynthrope

P.S. We realize that the last day of Pennsic is not ideal, as a lot of people's voices get worn out over the course of the week. Unfortunately, scheduling didn't permit it to be held earlier in the war. My apologies.

The countdown continues! Pennsic in less than a week for some of you and 2 weeks
for the rest of us. Woot!

Current KWC registrations stand here:

Soprano 1 = 11
Soprano 2 = 6
Alto = 15
Tenor = 7
Bass = 4

Needless to say we are top heavy, maybe more than ever! I'm going to ask at
least one of the Tenors to move down to Bass, and ask some of the Altos to move
down to Tenor.

But volunteers are better! So if you can move down a voice and are willing,
please drop me a line ASAP so I can change your main voice preference. Soprano
to Alto would also be greatly appreciated.

With regards to pre-registrations, it's nice to pre-register for choir so we can
make the decisions as above, but don't let the lack of a choir pre-registration
stop you or any of your friends from joining us. Walk-ins are MOST welcome. I
will even have some copies of the music on-site to give out (with a $5 copy and
binder fee) for last minute people. But don't rely on that - if you know you are
going to sing please copy the music and bring it in some sort of black binder.

With regards to above - please continue recruiting, both for singers and for
audience members for the Thursday night concert. With the sung learning tracks
there should be almost NO barriers to someone who wants to participate. All I
ask is that they can match pitch, can hold their own harmony part (not that hard
if they are surrounded by people of like voices) and are coachable!

More on what to expect and what to bring in a later post.

Robyn

As we prepare for the upcoming war, let us not forget about other singing opportunities at Pennsic. One you won't find on any official schedule is the annual drinking and singing walk that starts at my encampment and meanders through the Serengeti, bartering song for beverage.

We meet at Camp Crook'd Cat (Block E02 on the Strand) on Monday of War Week (8/6 for you crazy people with calendars) just before dusk, warm up and practice some Period drinking songs, and then head out once we reach critical mass. We will provide the music, you just need to bring your singing voices, a mug, and a flashlight.

For those of you with poor navigational skills, I can lead a troupe from rehearsal over to my encampment.
