Hi Edward,
Glad you enjoyed the photos. Hope they help new attendees get a sense of the
environ's before their drive to the site. Should help with planning what to
bring in terms of camping gear and what it will be like.

Hi,
I've posted about 100 photos of the festival site. These are shots of the
various areas of the site such as music bowl, camp grounds, food court, etc.
There are no shots of the performers in this collection. I'll leave that to
others.
The main purpose of these pictures are to help new people next year get a sense
of what to expect in terms of the facilities and environment. In past years I
have tried to explain it in words, and will continue to do so, but being able to
see what it looks like will very much help.
Since most of you were actually there, I don't think you'll learn much from
these photos but feel free to take a look. To see them, click on the "Photos"
icon on the left side the discussion group web page, then select the 2009
folder.

Hi Patty,
I'll check my MySpace address again tonight, and repost if it's incorrect on

What a great festival again (my third) all acts were great. Only improvement
would be the availability of showers on the Monday morning, apart from that
everything very well organised.
I have posted some pics on My Space if anyone is interested, and I do have more,

Ok.. been looking for the past two weeks through the RV, guitar cases etc...
I think I may have left a little cosmetic-type purse at the revival stage when
we played there. Either that, or it bounced out of the pocket of the gig bag
going back to camp.. It contained a tuner, capos, power-picks, maybe $40 (tips
from a previous gig).. I couldn't find lost and found info on the website.. The
darn thing was my mother's.. old and beat up, but was long enough for the
intellitouch tuner to fit.. my name was on the tuner and probably the capo too
(everybody's looks like everybody else's...)
thanks,

Hello dear Kate Wolf producers! This was my first Kate Wolf festival (in fact,
my first camping folk festival) and it was incredibly wonderful. I have a few
suggestions, but first I want to make sure you know what an amazing event you
are putting on. I came home totally blissed out, thoroughly bonded with the
folksinging-group friends I came with, intensely inspired to learn more music,
and planning to make this a yearly pilgrimage from Oregon.
The performer lineup was great. I liked the variety; I especially liked Chris
Smither and Girlyman, and hope you get them both back. I'd love to see the
Indigo Girls there, too. Jamming 101 was excellent, too, and I hope you continue
to have them come.
But even more important than the performers was the feeling of community. I was
amazed at how close I felt, not just with the group I came with, but with
everyone! People were smiling, talking, getting to know each other, helping each
other. I'm sure this is because of the kind of people who are attracted to this
festival, because the festival is built around our love for Kate Wolf and her
music. But I think that the way the event is run has a lot to do with it too.
The rules were fair and civilized, based on people's needs. And the staff was
without exception relaxed, cheerful, and helpful, even as they managed hundreds
of people looking for a campsite or a chair site.
Little touches like the sprinklers were great! I felt taken care of. Anything
else you can think of to help deal with the heat would be good.
The first aid tent people were SO helpful with the very minor problem I had.
A couple of suggestions:
--Is there any way to have more shade at the main stage?
--More variety in the food court would have been good, including some non-spicy
vegetarian food. Loved the raspberry freezes!!!
--We camped near the fire circle, knowing that it wouldn't be quiet--and most of
us were up late jamming. Later, though (2:00-5:00 am), I realized that it was
the clapping that kept me awake, not the music. Since it is set up as a sharing
circle, I wonder if a norm of a moment of silence and smiles instead of clapping
could be established after 1:00 or so?
--The handout/guide could be greatly improved. It would really help to have the
different stages listed in parallel (as they were on the website) so that one
can see what's going on at the same time. I ended up writing it all in on one
page. Or at least put them on adjacent pages! The map needs to be much bigger
and clearer, with better icons for things like bathrooms and ice, and to have
all of the stages on it. It would be easier to find the info on a particular
performer if they were alphabetized.
--Signs to the river were unclear as to where clothing-optional and
clothing-required areas were.
--I think someone else said this--it would have been helpful to have a marked
path from the riverside campsites up to the bathrooms.
Thank you so much for listening to my feedback! I'll be back next year (with a
larger group because we're talking it up!).

Folk is in fact a very big tent these days. I think that Roots Music and
Americana fit in it just fine. I'd say Preservation Hall and Riders are Roots
bands. Dave Alvin certainly fits, too, in his way. Was there really anybody
there who couldn't have fit into the broader definition of folk? I'm not sure
I'd go as far as Louis Armstrong (All music is folk music). I think for
instance that Britney Spears is an example of corporate or industrial music (for
lack of better words). And I'm sure we could all think of other examples. But
in cases like that, I think there would be mutual aversion. Most of us wouldn't
want them. And they wouldn't want to play for us.

As far as this being a FOLK festival in honor of Kate I have several comments
regarding this. Most festivals are having a very hard time in this economy
surviving. It is important that a great venue like this continue to thrive. A
poorly attended festival with a narrow focus will not survive. It is important
for the promotor, the artist, the attendee and any non-profit beneficiary to
come away from the festival feeling they have received something of value
whether that is money, good music or good vibes. If any of these parties do not
"profit" in some way the festival will not continue. FOLK is a BIG umbrella !

I don't expect Kate fest would have the great food that Jazzfest has but I would
expect them to have more choices then were there. The ice cream vendor (could
have been a gold mine) had no choices. There really was no GOOD CHOCOLATE to be
had anywhere. What happened to the Turkey booth ? Where were the great
sandwich vendors ?

1. More restrooms in the end of the riverside campground and near the camp fire beach area. The porta potties were clean when ever I had visited. place extra paper as several had run out.
2. This year was missing flag ropes to indicate a walkway from the road in riverside campground up the the road with the restrooms- walking through sardenes to the porta pottie.
3. The Security was heavy handed at the campfire telling us "not to sing together as the sound carries..." singing together is what the camp fire scene is all about and this was before 2AM. Mean sceurity bad vibes, over kill and pissed off people.
4. ICE 20 LB bags available only to vendors and it was cheep? So, 7 lbs bags were sold the general people at triple the price at the event. Sad money maker for someone had us over a barrel.
5. New stage- forgot the name was not listed on the map next to the camp store and showers no one could find it. The map was not updated this year.
6. Showers- Not open or available on Monday several answers were given, saving water, too hard to clean. I really needed a shower apon packing loading in 100+ degree temp and about to drive 4+ hours. peeeew.
7. Important elders Rosealie, Rambling Jack were given small venues to play in very packed need bigger stage areas.
8. After the gig on monday AM the lost and found was moved from the security booth and no one knew what happend or the location of the box. I still have lost items.

With all due respect to Kate, this festival has evolved beyond simply folk. And
in order for festivals of this type to continue to thrive and appeal to a
younger crowd, some amount of diversification in music is essential.
And I am not talking about bringing in Metallica. But in previous years we have
seen Robert Earl Keen and Los Lobos who both seemed to fit fine into the overall
feel and had splendid Sat nite sets. I can think of lots of bands who would fit
the bill. Even switching around Patty Griffin and Dave Alvin would have worked
better for me and I loved Patty's set.
But, we all enjoy festivals in our own way.

Great festival, we'll go next year. Had a motorcoach, and by 0900 Fri, the good spots were gone.
Yea it was hot, never made it to the river, saw a sign that said "Beware of snakes". Uh oh. I thought people were very courtious (sp) with each other.
My only suggestion would be more golf carts for transport. The heat, the average age of the festival goers and et al, should generate more transport. I saw some '60ish people walking with assitive devices, and the carts were full. Granted too, there are rocks which at night can be dangerous.
The food was good, although with the heat, we didn't eat too much.
My goal next year is to work for Rock Medicine and see the festival from a new perspective.
Thanks for your kind help Dan.

was nothing that I really didn't like as far as the music is concerned. But the

offer Asleep at the Wheel, The Time Jumpers, Ranch Romance, Cowboy Jazz, Cow
Bop, Leon Redbone, Connie Evingson and the Hot Club of Sweden, Wayne Hancock,
Big Sandy and the Fly Rite Boys. The other thing I would offer is some local
acts that I know of. The Hot Frittatas and Harris-Youngblood come to mind.
Those two would probably be afternoon acts. But they could also work some
smaller stages. I have not been in touch with Phil for a very long time. But
Swing Street is another very good local act if they're still going.

I'd like to have also had an Elk burger and an Ostrich burger . But the Asian
place was so good that I kept going back. I also tried the Greek place. Very
good. I have been to the African food place before, too. And it was good. But
I just didn't get around to it this year.

confusing. It was hard to tell where swimming suits were required and where
they weren't. I personally don't care. And I think most attendees to this
particular festival don't. It's not too unusual for women to invade the men's
shower house when their side is too crowded. And nobody seems to mind that
either. But the friend who was with me would have preffered to be in a swimsuit
required area.

think that about covers it. I love this festival. Great acts. And something
to do no matter what happens. I wish I could have seen and done more. But
there is always next year. Thaks.

Hi all,
Hope most all of you made it to the festival, and those of you that used the
Ticket Market or Ride board found it useful.
I just got back home after a very enjoyable (although Hot) weekend.
Now it's time to hear from you. The promoters do monitor this group and have
expressed an interest to get feedback on the festival. Your feedback is a major
source they use to improve the festival from year to year. They want to know
what you like, what you didn't like, what changes you think should be made, and
what you think of new changes from year to year. They also are interested in
your view of the artist line up, vendors, security, etc. In essence the entire
attendee experience.
So, if during the the festival, you found yourself saying things like "Gee. I
wish ....", "Boy, that sure is nice...", "That certainly sucks", "Man, this is
great", "Wow, that was handled well" or any other such thought, this is your
time to jot a quick note about it.
We really want to hear from you!
Thanks -- Dan

Here's a working link to the 5-day Accuweather forecast for Laytonville CA. In
past years they have been very accurate.
http://www.accuweather.com/us/ca/laytonville/95454/forecast.asp
This site actually has localized weather forecasts. Laytonville is NOT the same
weather as Ukiah, because it is much higher elevation, and has less of a
mountain ridge to block flows from the northwest where the cooler air comes
from.

Is Ukiah's weather the same as Laytonville's? If not, what's the usual
temperature difference? Ukiah seems to be the location for the weather web
sites.
I think a good rule of thumb is the Strawberry Fest limit of 32" in height.
I noticed that Strawberry has raised it from 28" over the years.
