Hi all,

Just a short note on the artist list so far.

•The Neville Brothers
•Ani Di Franco
•Steve Earle
•David Grisman Bluegrass Experience
•Linda Tillery & the Cultural Heritage Choir
•Baka Beyond
•Poor Man's Whiskey
•Robert Earl Keen
•Stacey Earle & Mark Stuart
•Greg Brown
•Po' Girl

Looks like it's shaping up real nice.

Don't forget you still have till January 18 to get tickets at the "Holiday"
price which is the lowest price offered by the festival. This is a $55 saving
over the gate price for a full festival ticket. If money is tight for you don't
miss this savings opportunity.

Don't forget that you can keep up with all the latest at the festival web site
at http://www.cumuluspresents.com/kate/

Edward,
That's great.  I assume you've attended in the past.  Any suggestions for new comers?

I haven't missed it since I first attended in about 2003...or maybe 2004.
I personally think it rivals Strawberry. Newcomers should be prepared to camp
in full sun. Bring some shade with you. They should also be prepared for a
swim in the creek. The creek is a sure way to beat the occassional heatwaves
that accompany the festival from time to time.

Hi all,

I'm getting excited about this years festival. It promises to be a great one.

Now that the time is getting closer, I expect to see more use of this discussion
group. Please feel free to ask questions. We have many people in the group who
have attended many times and between them and myself we can provide a wealth of
informaiton. Anything from camping, to facilities, to weather, and other
"logistics" - so please feel free to ask.

For those of you who may be new to the group, we have a ride board for people
either needing a ride or offering a ride. We also have a ticket market for
those needing to sell or buy spare tickets. These items are in the "database"
section (see menu at the left of your screen). Click on "Database" (to your
left), then click on the table you want (rides wanted, rides offered, or ticket
market). This will open a window of the items currently in the list and by
using the "Add Record" button you can add an item of your own.

I'm looking forward to another great festival.

Dan,

I suggest you start a Facebook group page for Kate Wolf Music Festival. There's
a page for Kate Wolf, but it's about her and her music, not about the festival.
There is currently not a group for the festival. Anybody could start and
administer such a group, and there can me more than one admin. So why not you,
Dan rather than someone out of the blue?

They say the parking lot opens at 8 and the ticket booth at 8:30 butfor
the last 5 years they have said the same thing and when we have arrived at 7:30
the gates were open and there were at least 2 to 4 rows of parked cars.
Consequently we try to arrive earlier and earlier to get a campsite as much in
the shade as we can in the Riverside camp.

Hi Jan,

First of all, the CHP requires that no traffic flow be impeeded by the festival
so that means no line up of cars is allowed on the highway.

As you enter the site from US-101, you will find yourself in a parking area. To
the left is the day use parking and to the right is the short term parking, at
the end of which is the ticket tent. The gate from the short term parking area
to the camping area opens on Friday at 8:30 and no one is allowed into the
camping area until they have traded thier paper ticket for a wrist band at the
ticket tent.

As you enter the short term parking area, you park your vehicle in the order of
arrival (in rows) and you are then allowed to leave your vehicle to walk over to
get your wrist band. RV's and cars towing trailers line up off to the side.
Once the Camping gate is open, the cars are released to the gate in the same
order they arrived.

It's all very carefully controlled to assure that it winds up in
First-Come-First served order (unless of course you are not at your vehicle when
your parking row is released).

I don't know for sure what time the gate from the highway to the parking lot
opens on Friday, I could be 8:30, but it may be a bit earlier (8:00?, 7:00?
6:00?). If you get there too early (i.e., before the gate to the parking lot
opens) you will not be allowed to stop and wait. You will have to move along
down the highway to a spot where there is a pull out that isn't closed and wait
15 to 30 minutes, then turn around and take another pass by the gate. I suspect
there will be a few other folks doing the same thing.

If your goal is Riverside campground (most shade, most people, most noise late
at night) be aware that you can drive in to find a campsite and unload your gear
but then you must move your car to a parking lot designated for Riverside
campers' cars. If your goal is a different campground, there is not as much
need to be one of the first ones in.

          Dan

They say the gate from the highway to the parking area, short term, at 8 am and then the ticket booth opens at 8:30. We arrived one year and parked along the highway with about 25 other cars and waited until the main gate to the parking opened. The last few years we have left Willits at about 6:30 or so and arrived well before 8am and there has been 2 to 4 rows of cars parked at the short term parking waiting for the ticket booth to open. It would seem to me they open the gate from the highway to the parking area to wait for the ticket booth to open sometime before 8am.
I like the Riverside camp because it is closer to main stage area. My wife would like to try another area further away but I have disability and closer is better and the camp where people with  disabilities park is not very inviting.

Hi ,

In my own experience from last year, they said the same thing about not arriving early, when we arrive at the time they stated we were way at the end of a line that eventually parked in the reception parking but we ended up having to camp way out from the main gate. It appears that they say one thing but do another.

I really wish they would open up the gates the night before, just to the short
term parking, then folks could arrive as they wished and just spend the night in
their vehicles until they open up the festival...

The amount of folks driving back and forth on 101 waiting for them to open the
gates is a real traffic hazard.

I do understand the logistical problems though.

Just a reminder...

Springtime Pricing Ends May 24th
Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival June 25th – 27th
At Black Oak Ranch, Laytonville, Ca

Featuring Little Feat, Ani Di Franco, Robert Earl Keen, Steve Earle, Greg Brown,
Charlie Musselwhite , The Waifs, David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, Linda
Tillery & The Cultural Heritage Choir & Much More!
The 15h Annual Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival, takes place June 25 – 27, at
the beautiful Black Oak Ranch in Laytonville, California. This family friendly
festival is one of Northern California's best summer events.

Springtime ticket pricing will be in effect until the 24th of May and offers the
best possible pricing for full festival tickets; with adult tickets priced at
$160 and youth tickets (7 — 14 yrs. old) at $55. Full festival tickets include
three nights of camping.

This year sports a full moon on the Saturday night, with both The Waifs and
Little Feat closing out underneath the bright lunar glow in the Main Music
Meadow. Following them, for the late-night crowd, at the more intimate stages,
will be Hot Buttered Rum, a tip of the hat to Norton Buffalo with Charlie
Musselwhite and Catfish Jack, and a dance party with the Love Choir. Friday
night features Robert Earl Keen, Greg Brown, Po' Girl and more, while Sunday
night concludes with the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, Steve Earle (solo),
and Ani Di Franco. And once again the Sherry Austin Band will perform a full set
of Kate Wolf songs. Amongst the many other highlights scheduled for the weekend
will be a late afternoon set on Sunday joining Poor Man's Whiskey and Hot
Buttered Rum in a grouping dubbed "Poor Buttered Rumskey", and the dance
inducing songs and rhythms of Baka Beyond, a band of musicians from Britain,
France and Africa.

The festival is just a three hour drive north of San Francisco and two hours
south of Arcata. With a large stage in the Main Music Meadow, three other
intimate stage areas, workshops, kids' area, camping, food court, music jamming
area, and flowing creek, the annual Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival is a
wonderful place to relax and enjoy a weekend with friends, family, and lovers of
great music. Black Oak Ranch is home to the Hog Farm and Camp Winnarainbow-a
circus camp for kids. Having garnered a reputation as a calm, peaceful gathering
of music lovers, the festival grounds cover approximately 150 acres, and the
event is powered by bio-diesel generators.

Hello everyone.

We attended the Kate Wolf festival in 2008 and would have liked to have been
back this year. Unfortunately we can't make it so we are dead jealous of you
all as you have a treat of a line up this year.

We hope to be back there in 2011, but as our daughter gets older we me have to
come out in mid July as opposed to late June. I wondered if there are any other
festivals of similar size and with a good atmosphere that we could consider if
we can't make it back to KWF.

Last visit we spent all our time north of San Francisco; this trip we'll
probably focus on mid Califinia/Yosemite/Sequoia & Kings Canyon & most likely
we'll rent an RV.

Music styles folk/alternative country/anyone that would appear at KWF.

thanks in anticipation

This will be my first year attending the Kate Wolf Festival. I cannot tell you
how excited the kids and I are. Any advice other than the ordinary? My kids are
seasoned travelers and we road trip every year. I just wanted to find out if
there are any things you have learned through the years that may make our
experience better. I have not been back to California since I last saw the
Neville Brothers, JGB, David Grisman in Lake Tahoe (close to 20 years ago). I am
eager to return and share the beauty with my kids. We will be coming by route of
Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon and visiting Redwood National Park before we head to
Laytonville. Any advice along the route would be welcome to.

Hi Shelly,

You don't say how old your kids are so it's hard to know what to reccomend.
Here are some geneal ideas. If you or your kids are in need of a good nights
sleep (especially if light sleepers) may be better to seek out the "Quiet" or
"Family" camps. Those are not as attractive (not much shade) but in Riverside
the party tends to go well into the wee hours of the morning. If you have an
issue with nudity, make a note of where the clothing optional swimming area is
and steer clear of it. In the program you'll get when you arrive, make note of
the kids area activities and the performer schedule in the kids area. Don't let
your kids miss John McCutcheon if he performs on that stage. After you arrive
and get your camp set up, you may want to find the security station (which is
next to first aide) and make sure your kids know to go there if they (or you)
get lost. In general the KWMMF is very safe and well run, but it is a community
of several thousand people and in any group of that size it's always wise to
alert. With the kids, try to hit the shower tent off hours rather than prime
time. It will be much less hectic then and you won't feel as rushed as you
would if there was a long line waiting to get in. Note sure what else would be
relevant to having kids there. Let us know their age(s) and any specific
questions and I'm sure someone will offer an opinion.

In terms of getting here: I assume you've considered the big ticket stops like
Yellowstone, Tetons, and Glacier, so will concentrate on the Oregon, N. CA area.
if you have time you may want to swing by Mt St. Helens for a few hours which I
found quite interesting. Also, a don't miss is Crater Lake (you may want to see
if you can camp there the night before you camp at Redwood NP). Not too far
from Crater lake, and on the way toward the coast, is Oregon Caves. Another
nice place is to consider on the return trip is Mt. Lassen.

Hi Friends,

It's been many years since I have been to Black Oak Ranch (last time I was there
was for a Hogfarm Pig-Nic). I really don't remember the layout.

I'll be going to Kate Wolf this year with a 2 year old who still takes a long
nap every day. I understand that both the kids camping area and the quiet
camping area are both in full sun. I'm worried about excessive heat in the tent
while she's sleeping in the middle of the day. Can anyone give me advice on
shady camping options in the kids area or quiet area? Do shady sites in those
areas even exist?

I'm willing to try and sell my ticket for the sake of her safety, but of course
that would be a bummer!

Thanks,
Catia

Hi Catia,

I'm not sure how the Pig-Nic events are layed out so can't give you a comparison
but can give some comment on the KWMMF layout. Both the Quiet camp and the
Family camp are mostly in the sun. Having said that there are some shady area's
available in both. The family camp is much closer to the areas where things
happen (stages, food, ice, shower, etc.) whereas the Quiet camp is near the far
end of the camping area - where it's less crowded and quieter as one would
expect.

Both of these camping areas are mostly (80%-90%?) in an open field but one side
of each area is along the edge of the tree'ed area (on the NE side of a tree
line that runs NW to SE). If you can grab a spot against or even tucked into
this tree line you'll get morning sun but by noon can be in shade. As the
afternoon progresses more and more of these two areas become shaded. As I
recall, the Quiet camp area has more area tucked into the trees than does Family
camp. The key to nabbing one of these more shady spots is getting there early
on Friday before these spots are taken by others.

If you look at the map posted on the web site
(http://www.cumuluspresents.com/kate/maps_directions.html) you can see where the
family camp is (I7). I'm not sure what that solid gray line is that runs
between Family camp and Riverside camp, but it essentially marks the edge of the
tree cover (with the Riverside camp being in the trees and the family camp being
mostly not in the trees). Since these two camp areas share a common border, you
could set up in Riverside (if you're tent camping) next to family camp and have
more shade but also be in essentially the same "noise" environment as family
camp a few feet away. Please note that Family Camp is level, but then there's a
bit of a slope for about 10 feet down to the more level area Riverside camp.
People do set up tents on this slope but this should be considered.

If your main concern is noise during nap time, any campground should do unless
you're near one of the stages (see "mask" icons on map plus an unmarked small
stage by the camp store). In Riverside (the shadiest), in mid afternoon, there
will be people walking around and there may be some folks playing musical
instruments at their campsite but it's actually quite relaxing with the soft
music floating by. However, from what I understand, Riverside camp does stay
awake quite late (early?) with much more jamming which may or may not keep kids
awake (depending on the kid).

Finally, if you do wind up in a sunny spot for afternoon nap time, you could
take a blanket/tarp off to a quiet/shady area of your choosing and do naptime
there.

Hope that helps, but if not ask again. You can also see some pictures in the
"Photos" area of this web site. make note of the following photos:

- "MLCG Willow 02 through 05" - shows shade near far end of campground (quiet
area)

- "Family Camp 1, 3" and "MLCG Quiet 2" shows some shade in those two areas

Husband and I went to Kate Wolf last year for the first time.  We had the luxury of staying in our motorcoach, and honestly even with the AC on during the day via generator, it took forever to cool because of the heat.  We were in full sun.  Personally, if you have the ability to let your 2 year old stay with someone at home, I think it would be better.  There were kids there, but boy it gets hot hot hot.  I know we were in the triple digits last year.  Not trying to be a downer, but even in the shade it gets a bit hot there.  The quiet camp as said before is way far away from the main area.....there are golf carts that come and go but not always when you want them.  The family camp as said is closer.....but i would probably go the first year solo then decide for yourself

Agree that it was hot and dusty, but our 4 year old loved it.

Can't say that we were in our RV very much in the day, but we camped down at
Oak.

This was a bit further out than we maybe would have liked, but it was peaceful
in the evenings.

There's not a lot of shade when you get down to the stage area. There is the
"parachute" tent that, if you get there early, is a nice place to be most of the
time. It sometimes gets a bit noisy if there is someone that really needs
"listening to", but the chair policy means that you can usually find a chair to
sit in nearer the front.

I wouldn't be put off. Sit around and relax in the warmth - or come to England
and get frozen....or rained on....most of the time.

Off peak, wander into a shower, and out again - you'll be dry before you've gone
too far.

It's a beautiful festival and we hope to be able to get over there again soon.

Ian,
England.

We did a tour acouple of years back that took in the Kate Wolf Festival as well
as Lassen and the Pacific Coast.

My advice would be to skip Redwood National Park, and spend at least a day and
half working your way along the Avenue of the Giants. That's not to say we
didn't enjoy Redwood National Park (love the banana slugs), but we enjoyed
"Avenue" more.

It was relatively easy to pull over and park (we'd rented a 26ft with slideout)
at will i.e. if you saw something you liked you could pull over within reason.
First day we went on a hike, not overly far, but to a creek and spun stones and
walked and marvelled....the blue jays will nab your lunch if you aren't alert!
We also found a nice place to camp at the southern end, which was really nice
with a pool and crazy golf. If you like I'll dig out the details.

Ian,
England

they will be returning?

We're hoping to hear that sweet duo again. Last year they sang at the Lagunitas
stage and wowed us all. Are they coming?
