Woody is just Woody. He is just a voice and a guitar. Harsh voiced and nasal, his guitar hanging like a tire iron on a rusty rim, there is nothing sweet about Woody, and there is nothing sweet about the songs he sings. But there is something more important for those who will listen. There is the will of a people to endure and fight against oppression. I think we call this the American spirit.

- John Steinbeck

Next year's Festival is set for June 26 -28. Tickets will go on sale
the end of November and announcements regarding line-up confirmations
will be made in the coming months.

The Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival started as a one day, one time
event back in 1996. Now in its 14th year the festival has grown to a
three day, three night, camping event at beautiful Black Oak Ranch in
Laytonville, 3 hours north of San Francisco. This will be the 9th year
at Black Oak Ranch for the Festival.

Hi,

I created a photo album in the Kate Wolf Festival discussion group for
attendees to upload their photos from the 2008 festival. Please feel
free to post your pictures from 2008 in this folder.

As the 2009 festival draws near, there will be lots of questions posted
here about camping, terrain, swimming, camping, showers, weather,
camping, food, water, camping, ambiance, rules, jam sessions, and
camping.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, it would be very helpful to
have photos from you, the attendees, that show what festival life is
like to help those who haven't been before.

                         Thanks -- Dan

Hi all,

This is a cross post from "NorthEastFolknRoots@yahoogroups.com".

The full article and discussion thread can be found at

While this is not strictly related to the KWMMF, since Utah had been
so instumental in the creation and continuation of the festival, and
had performed at virtually all the festivals (I think he missed two)
I believe it is appropriate to post this on this disucssion group. --

Subject: 2 CD tribute to Utah Phillips!
From: Dan Schatz
Date: 29 Dec 08 - 07:15 PM

It is an absolute joy to announce the upcoming release of Singing
Through the Hard Times - a Tribute to Utah Phillips, a double CD on
Righteous Babe Records. Musicians include Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton,
Emmylou Harris and Mary Black, John McCutcheon, as well as several
Mudcatters, including Kendall, Jean Ritchie, myself, Big Mick, Mark
Ross, and more. The official release date is February 24, but it
should be available from Righteous Babe a few weeks before that.

It all happened like this:

Last winter, when Utah Phillips was very ill, a number of folks were
planning benefit concerts for him. At a gathering in Maine, I started
talking with Kendall and Jacqui Morse about maybe putting together a
benefit CD - a little CD-R, perhaps, of songs by and for Utah from
various friends and admirers. The funds would go to defray the
medical expenses.

Jacqui went into the kitchen, tapped Gordon Bok on the shoulder, and
said, "Gordon, I wonder if I might have a word?" Two minutes later
she came back and said, "Gordon says he'll do Goodnight Loving
Trail." An hour later Will Brown and Cindy Kallet had agreed to
do "Going Away," I'd put myself down for "Queen of the Rails,"
Kendall for "Phoebe Snow," Kat Logan for "The Faded Roses of
December," and Jacqui and Kendall for "Miner's Lullaby."

Kendall wrote to Pete Seeger, and Tom Paxton, who both said "Yes." I
talked to John McCutcheon, Si Kahn and Cathy Fink. Mark Ross joined
us, and a slew of Rose Tattoo Folks. Mick Lane said yes. Rosalie
Sorrels said yes. Magpie said yes. Jean Ritchie said yes. Art Thieme
said yes. And Emmylou Harris and Mary Black agreed to donate a rare
recording of the two of them singing "The Green Rolling Hills of West
Virginia" as a duet. Utah suggested talking to Harry Tuft, who said
yes. Ani DiFranco donated a fabulous instrumental version of "The
Internationale" and offered to release the album on her label,
Righteous Babe Records. Charlie Pilzer agreed to master. Everyone we
asked said yes - in the end we completely filled two CDs with 39
tracks of amazing music.

Of the 39 tracks on the CD, all but 10 are brand new recordings - and
many of the 10 are fairly rare. The title song, "Singing Through the
Hard Times" is an ensemble piece with Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer,
Magpie, Emma's Revolution, myself and a host of others. Like a few
songs on this compilation, it's never been recorded before. There's
even a recording of Utah's son, Brendan, and his band Fast Rattler
singing a never recorded Utah song from long ago.

All proceeds go to Joanna, Utah's wife, to help with the many
remaining expenses, and anything she doesn't need will go to
organizations that help musicians in need.

I can't even begin to express the amount of love, care and generosity
from so many people that went into this recording - especially
Kendall and Jacqui Morse, who worked very hard to turn this from a
small project to a Big Deal. There were lots of folks, too, who heard
about the project and offered to send recordings, but sadly, we'd
already filled up. They too deserve thanks.

So that's the story. I'm heading out to California, and am planning
to debut the CD in a KVMR - fm radio show this Friday or Saturday.

Here's the complete track list.

1. Magpie, Dan Schatz, Emma's Revolution, Cathy Fink, Marcy Marxer
and Friends - Singing through the Hard Times (3:26)
2. Will Brown, Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen - Going Away (4:55)

8. Harry Tuft and Jack Stanesco - She'll Never Be Mine (3:01)

20. Emma's Revolution - Hymn Song (3:45)

The CD is listed by Righteous Babe at a VERY reasonable $15.98 and if
you buy directly from Righteous Babe Records, all the proceeds will
go to the benefit! They haven't gotten it up on their website yet,
but you can call them at 1-800-ON-HER-OWN (716-852-7978 for
international customers) and ask for the Utah tribute – item number
RBR065-2-CD . Even better, you can e-mail them at
store@....

I can't wait until this is released – there's some amazing music on
these CDs, and it is a real heartfelt tribute to Utah.

"I Want My Country Back"- The Music Of Greg Brown

CD REVIEWS

Greg Brown: In The Hills Of California- Live At The Kate Wolf Music Festival 1997-2003, Greg Brown, Red House Records, 2004

The last time that the name Greg Brown, singer/songwriter and free-wheeling homespun philosopher appeared in this space was just recently as I found myself publicly `flirting', via cyberspace of course, with his wife the also accomplished singer/songwriter Iris Dement, my Arkie angel (See my review of her "Infamous Angel" CD). It is all Greg's fault, in any case. I was `introduced' to Iris on his tribute album "Driftless" where she did a cover of "Jimmie Rodgers Going Home" (complete with yodel at the end). So to be absolutely aboveboard and fair I find it necessary to review some of his work...

AMERICAN LEFT HISTORY

This space is dedicated to the proposition that we need to know the history of the struggles on the left and of earlier progressive movements here and world-wide. If we can learn from the mistakes made in the past (as well as what went right) we can move forward in the future to create a more just and equitable society. I will be reviewing books, CDs and movies I believe everyone needs to read, hear and look at as well as making commentary from time to time.

I've got my ticket!! This lineup is even better than ususal,
although I will miss Utah Phillips. In late May or early June I'll
be posting on the ride board as well as here since I have no car.
I'm willing to contribute some cash for the ride from Santa Rosa on
Friday and to Santa Rosa on Monday.

In relation to Edwards comments, I think we'll all miss Utah - he was one of a
kind. However, it is good that his son, Duncan Phillips, will be hosting a
Tribute to Utah at this years festival.

Hi,

It does not appear that Nina will be attending this year, either in her old
capacity as musician at large or with the Dave Alvin or Guilty Women acts. Of,
course, things could change. Perhaps if fans send Nina a "please come" email
she might change her mind.

Hi all,

We now have a place for ride sharing on the Kate Wolf Festival Discussion group.

You can use this facility to either post a need for a ride or to offer room in
your vehicle to someone else.

There are two tables in the "Database" section of this site - one for rides
wanted and one for rides offered. Click on "Database" on the left hand menu,
then select the table (ride wanted or ride offered) for your situation.

You can look through the database of people looking for or offering rides and
respond to them. You can also add your own row in the database for others to
see. Once you add an entry, please email the moderator (Califdan@...)
if you need to change or delete it.

All members of the group can see the content of both of these tables.

Hi all,

Well, it's 30 days till the festival kicks off and I for one am looking forward
to it. It will be so nice to turn off my cell phone and leave it in the car
unloved for 3 days and be in the great outdoors, soaking up the beautiful
Northern California scenery and weather. Far enough from civilization that my
company can't reach me for the latest emergency. What a joy.

So, what are you all thinking about this years festival? I think the artist
line up looks great. I know we have some first timers in this discussion group
who must have questions so I'd love to see those questions posted.

Also be aware that we now have a "rides wanted" list and a "rides offered" list
in this group. Go to the "database" section on the left hand menu and you'll
see those two lists. If you're looking for a ride or have space in your car for
a music lover you can add an entry into the apprpriate list. Once you have been
matched up, let me know and I'll remove your entry from the list.

Ticket refunds ended on May 15, so if you find yourself with an extra ticket,
you can use this group to look for a buyer. And if you suddenly need another
ticket you may want to use this group to ask if anyone has an extra.

So, let's get this discussion going. Have any of you seen Emmylou or Richard
Harris live before? Were they as good as on CD's? I saw Shawn Colvin at this
festival when she came along with Mary Chapin Carpenter and she was quite good.
I'm looking forward to seeing her again.

Who are you looking forward to seeing?

what questons do you have about the festival?

what suggestions do you have from prior festivals that you'd like to offer.

Etc.

                            Dan

I understand there are no hookups, and generators are only allowed during the daytime.

That’s correct.

How far is the festival from the rv sites?

About 5 min walk to main stage.

Emmylou harris is on sunday night. Can we stay until mon am?

Yes

Can we barbeque at the site? We have an attached propane grill....

Propane is OK, no open charcoal though.

Are there enough RV sites?

Usually plenty of site available, it’s a large area.

Well, I think a STRONG warning about the sunshine on the car camping
pasture is a good idea. You NEED to bring your own shade if you're going to be
out there if you intend to spend much daylight time in camp.
Personally, I'm really going to miss Utah Phillips. I'm looking forward to
his son's presentation this year. It's really the unique feel of the Kate Wolf
Festival that appeals to me. And Utah was central to that uniqueness. No other
festival of this size can match either the intimacy or .... well, I don't quite
know how to put it. The, "I'll be a hippie till I die" statement by Wavy Gravy
a few years ago might sum it up best. The attitude seems very '60's to me. And
it's not the headliners who tend to create that (not that I don't enjoy them).
But you see the same headliners at all the festivals. Rather it's the smaller,
often local, acts like Utah and the people who man (or maybe I should say person
;)) the gates and carry the trash and etc. For me, that is really this
festival's strength. It's very northern California.

Hi Patty,

I see you got an answer already from Tom which are very accurate. However let
me expand on them a bit

As Tom Said, RV's are in the car camping area (unless you are "alter abeled"
which we can talk about if it applies to you). The car camping area itself is a
large rectangular meadow. It is about 4 to 5 time longer than it is wide (the
mainstage, food court, and vendors are accessed from one corner of this large
rectangle. From the farthest end of this meadow to the where the action is
takes about 15 minutes walking at a normal pace (not including stops along the
way to listen in on some fine jamming)

The car meadow is quite level except for one spot where it sinks down into a
hollow. It is divided into rough zones. There's Family Camp, Crew camp (off to
one side in the sunken hollow section which happens to be wooded), open camping,
and quiet camp (in that order). The farther you go from the event area the less
dense the camping.

This is open field camping. No defined spaces, no picnic tables, no fire pits.
If you're real close to the event area, expect to get to know your neighbors.
If you go way out to the quiet camp area at the far end you will have plenty of
elbo room. BTW they do have a shuttle (golf cart) that goes back and forth for
folks that need a ride to/from the event area.

In terms of shade, as Tom said it's hard to find, but not impossible to come by.
The rectangular area I described runs more or less north to south the long side
parallels Hwy 101 (but not right next to it). The sun comes up on the other
side of 101 (which of course is to the east). The west edge of the meadow is up
against a wooded area. If you pull your camper up to the western edge of the
rectangle (farthest away form 101) you will get afternoon shade. There are
also some trees sparsely scattered around the meadow that you can cozy up to and
there is also more ample shade at the farthest end in the quiet camp area.

Tom was also correct that propane BBQ is OK as long as it's not sitting directly
on the ground. No other form of fire is permitted. Generator use in an RV is
OK up to about 10:00 pm (charge those batteries). Technically though they are
not allowed in quiet camp at all but unless you have an exceptionally loud one,
it's not been a problem to fire it up mid day to juice up your batteries.

In all the festival years, they have never run out of camping space. But, later
arrivals will be a bit farther down the meadow along with the people who prefer
being a bit further away (eg. they want to sleep at night or just prefer a bit
more room). You are allowed to stay overnight on Sunday night, but need to
vacate by noon on Monday.

There is plenty of water but no hookups. There are water tanks scattered around
with various forms of spigots and drinking fountains but most of the tanks are
in the sun so expect warm/hot water. There is no sewage dump for RV's

Hope that helps Patty.

                    Dan

I really like what emeisse says. Let me echo the part about sun. Don't skimp
on the sunblock and drink plenty of water. As a note, most of the music meadow
(where the main stage is) is in sun most of the day. However, there is always a
decent portion of the audience area that has shade at any point in time and you
may occupy any unused chair until the owner returns. During the day, you can
alomst always find an empty chair in the shade.

I too am missing Utah and am eager to hear his son. However, I'm afraid I will
compare the son to the dad and that will be a disservice to him since no one can
live up to Utah. I am grateful that Wavy is still with us. Wavy has a lot that
same presense and ability to spin a good yarn as Utah did.

When I tell people on the East Coast about this festival, one thing I usually
say is "if you've ever wondered where all the hippies went, come to the KWMMF
and you'll know". I get as much out of just being with "my people" as I do from
the music, but I do wonder what these people do in the real world.

I am concerned though that I'm not seeing as many younger faces as are needed to
carry on as us people who actually remember the 60's age away. I'd hate to see
the festival slide further and further away from the musical genre of it's
namesake in order to attract younger people.

Wondering about Daytime Highs and Nighttime Lows at the festival. Understand
there's no telling with Northern California weather but the photos all seem to
indicate 75-80+ in the day time. Night time is less clear.

Also, is the festival area large enough to encourage the use of a bicycle to get
around or its all walkable and a bike would be more trouble than its worth.

Hi Rajiv,

As you said, Daytime highs vary from year to year but usually follow the pattern
of the prior week or so. In general, the cooler years have highs in the mid to
upper 80's. The Hot years have highs that can be well into the 100's. But
always clear except for a hight fog in some years (call it clouds) that burn off
by 10:00 am.

The nights are quite pleasant, but cool. I'd say that lows are usually in the
low 50's or mid 40's. When I'm out and about on the site around 4:30 AM I
usually wear a medium weight jacket over a sweater. It's comfortable for
sleeping. In terms of the hours up to midnight when most folks are at the
mainstage, you almost invariably will want to trade your shorts in for long
pants and get some long sleves on over the T-shirt. Some years that's enough.
In other years you'll want to add another layer or two. It's also quite dark at
night. I know that may sound foolish, but if you're used to city or suburbs you
may not be used to how dark it can get out in the country away from the light
pollution of developed areas.

Some folks bring bikes but not many. The crew and staff use bikes to some
degree, but not that many attendees do. Not really needed unless you decide to
camp at the farthest part of the camping area (that's where quiet camp is).
From that location it's about a 15 to 20 minute level walk to the event area at
a moderate walking pace. Roadways are dirt/gravel so a mountain bike would not
have a problem but it might be a bit rough for a touring bike with skinny tires.

               Hope that helps

I have to admnit to being a more avid walker than most people. But I make
the walk from the very farthest reaches of the camp to the stage area in less
than 10 minutes. So I think 15 is probably closer to what most people do than
20. I suspect that only the slowest walkers would take a full 20 minutes.

We have several friends coming this year for the first time. As we've worked all
the festivals at Black Oak, we've been in Bear Camp w/ the other workers and
have no idea what the pluses and minuses are to the various camping areas.. Any
thoughts that I may pass on to them?

Thanks!

As I said in an earlier post, most of the camping is in full sun. The
shady spots fill up fast. You want to bring shade creating devices with you.

Hi Sherry,

Let me give you my opinion on the camping options available at the festival.

RIVERSIDE

Riverside is the nicest and most popular but has some drawbacks.  It is the only one that has abundant shade in most sections which in hot years is a big consideration.  Other than at set up and tear down times, vehicles are not allowed in the area.  In other words you can drive in to drop your stuff off but then must move your vehicle to a parking lot for the duration of the festival.  Since it is the most popular, it is also the most crowded.  Be prepared to be elbow to elbow (tent to tent?) with your neighbors.  For some this is a feature (make new friends) for others a detractant (no privacy).  While there are many level places to pitch a tent, much of the area is sloping which I find tough for sleeping.  This campground also is where the Arlo Hagler and Revival stages are so you can hear some good music right from your camp site if you set up near one of them.  Riverside tends to have the most spontaneous activity meaning that the party goes pretty late.  If you desire 8 hours of sleep and can't block out extraneous noise it's not the best place to be.  It is the closest campground to the event area and the river and is very near the shower building.  It fills fast on Friday so if you are aiming for it, arrive early.

CAMPING MEADOW

The rest of the camping is in what I call the "camping meadow".  This is a flat field about a quarter mile long and maybe 200-300 yards wide.  In general this is open field camping with little shade.  It is divided into rough areas designed to meet various needs which I'll describe below.  Vehicles (cars, trucks, RV's, etc) are permitted in your camp site.  The event area is accessed from the one end of this meadow (through a parking lot).  That end is the most crowded and as you move farther and farther away from that end the camping density diminishes.  You can see a map at http://www.cumuluspresents.com/kate/maps_directions.html. The meadow runs NW to SE but since it parallels US-101 I think of it as N to S.  the event area (vendors, main stage, first aid, etc.) is at the north end.  Other than a few trees scattered around, the only shade is along the western edge where it is adjacent to a wooded area.  If you snuggle up to that tree line you'll get afternoon shade.  T

The areas described below are all in this meadow in order starting with the area closest to the event area.

FAMILY CAMP

This area is roped off.  It is for families with kids.  It is adjacent to the Riverside campground and some shade can be found.  It is close to the showers and as I understand the new Utah stage (Utahopia?) will be near this area.  If you have kids with you this may be a good choice.

MEADOWLANDS CAR CAMP

This area makes up the bulk of the real estate available for camping.  There is one wooded area in a hollow that is reserved for Crew and Staff so if you see a nice wooded area in the middle of the meadow it's probably that reserved area.  In general though it's full sun all day but level and you can have your vehicle with you. As mentioned above afternoon shade can be found along the western edge or under one of the trees scattered around.  The camping here is less "urban" than riverside.  More like the suburbs of the camping options.

QUIET CAMP

Quiet camp is at the farthest end of the meadow.  It does have some good shade trees that you can get under.  Usually it is very roomy there with plenty of elbow room, and is the most peaceful area.  Fewest people, and a concerted effort to keep it peaceful.  You won't have late night jams or noisy neighbors at night.  It is about a 15 minute walk from this location to the food court/main stage area assuming you don't stop along the way to visit or listen in on some jamming.  They do run a golf cart shuttle service through the campground for those that need a lift.

    Hope that helps  -- Dan

PS - for those that don't know, Bear Camp that Sherry mentioned is a backstage camping area for performers and staff. -- DH

Thanks, Dan. That was comprehensive. I've passed it along to a friend of
mine who is coming for the first time this year.
