Hi all,

Well, it's 30 days till the festival kicks off and I for one am looking forward
to it. It will be so nice to turn off my cell phone and leave it in the car
unloved for 3 days and be in the great outdoors, soaking up the beautiful
Northern California scenery and weather. Far enough from civilization that my
company can't reach me for the latest emergency. What a joy.

So, what are you all thinking about this years festival? I think the artist
line up looks great. I know we have some first timers in this discussion group
who must have questions so I'd love to see those questions posted.

Also be aware that we now have a "rides wanted" list and a "rides offered" list
in this group. Go to the "database" section on the left hand menu and you'll
see those two lists. If you're looking for a ride or have space in your car for
a music lover you can add an entry into the apprpriate list. Once you have been
matched up, let me know and I'll remove your entry from the list.

Ticket refunds ended on May 15, so if you find yourself with an extra ticket,
you can use this group to look for a buyer. And if you suddenly need another
ticket you may want to use this group to ask if anyone has an extra.

So, let's get this discussion going. Have any of you seen Emmylou or Richard
Harris live before? Were they as good as on CD's? I saw Shawn Colvin at this
festival when she came along with Mary Chapin Carpenter and she was quite good.
I'm looking forward to seeing her again.

Who are you looking forward to seeing?

what questons do you have about the festival?

what suggestions do you have from prior festivals that you'd like to offer.

Etc.

                            Dan

Could you tell me anything you know about where the RV's are put? I understand
there are no hookups, and generators are only allowed during the daytime.

How far is the festival from the rv sites? Emmylou harris is on sunday night.
Can we stay until mon am? Can we barbeque at the site? We have an attached
propane grill....

Are there enough RV sites?

Thanks
Patty

See the Map on the festival website, rv’s  are put in the meadowland Carcamp,

http://www.cumuluspresents.com/kate/maps_directions.html

I understand there are no hookups, and generators are only allowed during the daytime.

That’s correct.

How far is the festival from the rv sites?

About 5 min walk to main stage.

Emmylou harris is on sunday night. Can we stay until mon am?

Yes

Can we barbeque at the site? We have an attached propane grill....

Propane is OK, no open charcoal though.

Are there enough RV sites?

Usually plenty of site available, it’s a large area.

Thanks
Patty

Well, I think a STRONG warning about the sunshine on the car camping
pasture is a good idea. You NEED to bring your own shade if you're going to be
out there if you intend to spend much daylight time in camp.
Personally, I'm really going to miss Utah Phillips. I'm looking forward to
his son's presentation this year. It's really the unique feel of the Kate Wolf
Festival that appeals to me. And Utah was central to that uniqueness. No other
festival of this size can match either the intimacy or .... well, I don't quite
know how to put it. The, "I'll be a hippie till I die" statement by Wavy Gravy
a few years ago might sum it up best. The attitude seems very '60's to me. And
it's not the headliners who tend to create that (not that I don't enjoy them).
But you see the same headliners at all the festivals. Rather it's the smaller,
often local, acts like Utah and the people who man (or maybe I should say person
;)) the gates and carry the trash and etc. For me, that is really this
festival's strength. It's very northern California.

Hi Patty,

I see you got an answer already from Tom which are very accurate. However let
me expand on them a bit

As Tom Said, RV's are in the car camping area (unless you are "alter abeled"
which we can talk about if it applies to you). The car camping area itself is a
large rectangular meadow. It is about 4 to 5 time longer than it is wide (the
mainstage, food court, and vendors are accessed from one corner of this large
rectangle. From the farthest end of this meadow to the where the action is
takes about 15 minutes walking at a normal pace (not including stops along the
way to listen in on some fine jamming)

The car meadow is quite level except for one spot where it sinks down into a
hollow. It is divided into rough zones. There's Family Camp, Crew camp (off to
one side in the sunken hollow section which happens to be wooded), open camping,
and quiet camp (in that order). The farther you go from the event area the less
dense the camping.

This is open field camping. No defined spaces, no picnic tables, no fire pits.
If you're real close to the event area, expect to get to know your neighbors.
If you go way out to the quiet camp area at the far end you will have plenty of
elbo room. BTW they do have a shuttle (golf cart) that goes back and forth for
folks that need a ride to/from the event area.

In terms of shade, as Tom said it's hard to find, but not impossible to come by.
The rectangular area I described runs more or less north to south the long side
parallels Hwy 101 (but not right next to it). The sun comes up on the other
side of 101 (which of course is to the east). The west edge of the meadow is up
against a wooded area. If you pull your camper up to the western edge of the
rectangle (farthest away form 101) you will get afternoon shade. There are
also some trees sparsely scattered around the meadow that you can cozy up to and
there is also more ample shade at the farthest end in the quiet camp area.

Tom was also correct that propane BBQ is OK as long as it's not sitting directly
on the ground. No other form of fire is permitted. Generator use in an RV is
OK up to about 10:00 pm (charge those batteries). Technically though they are
not allowed in quiet camp at all but unless you have an exceptionally loud one,
it's not been a problem to fire it up mid day to juice up your batteries.

In all the festival years, they have never run out of camping space. But, later
arrivals will be a bit farther down the meadow along with the people who prefer
being a bit further away (eg. they want to sleep at night or just prefer a bit
more room). You are allowed to stay overnight on Sunday night, but need to
vacate by noon on Monday.

There is plenty of water but no hookups. There are water tanks scattered around
with various forms of spigots and drinking fountains but most of the tanks are
in the sun so expect warm/hot water. There is no sewage dump for RV's

Hope that helps Patty.

                    Dan

I really like what emeisse says. Let me echo the part about sun. Don't skimp
on the sunblock and drink plenty of water. As a note, most of the music meadow
(where the main stage is) is in sun most of the day. However, there is always a
decent portion of the audience area that has shade at any point in time and you
may occupy any unused chair until the owner returns. During the day, you can
alomst always find an empty chair in the shade.

I too am missing Utah and am eager to hear his son. However, I'm afraid I will
compare the son to the dad and that will be a disservice to him since no one can
live up to Utah. I am grateful that Wavy is still with us. Wavy has a lot that
same presense and ability to spin a good yarn as Utah did.

When I tell people on the East Coast about this festival, one thing I usually
say is "if you've ever wondered where all the hippies went, come to the KWMMF
and you'll know". I get as much out of just being with "my people" as I do from
the music, but I do wonder what these people do in the real world.

I am concerned though that I'm not seeing as many younger faces as are needed to
carry on as us people who actually remember the 60's age away. I'd hate to see
the festival slide further and further away from the musical genre of it's
namesake in order to attract younger people.

                   Dan

Wondering about Daytime Highs and Nighttime Lows at the festival. Understand
there's no telling with Northern California weather but the photos all seem to
indicate 75-80+ in the day time. Night time is less clear.

Also, is the festival area large enough to encourage the use of a bicycle to get
around or its all walkable and a bike would be more trouble than its worth.

Hi Rajiv,

As you said, Daytime highs vary from year to year but usually follow the pattern
of the prior week or so. In general, the cooler years have highs in the mid to
upper 80's. The Hot years have highs that can be well into the 100's. But
always clear except for a hight fog in some years (call it clouds) that burn off
by 10:00 am.

The nights are quite pleasant, but cool. I'd say that lows are usually in the
low 50's or mid 40's. When I'm out and about on the site around 4:30 AM I
usually wear a medium weight jacket over a sweater. It's comfortable for
sleeping. In terms of the hours up to midnight when most folks are at the
mainstage, you almost invariably will want to trade your shorts in for long
pants and get some long sleves on over the T-shirt. Some years that's enough.
In other years you'll want to add another layer or two. It's also quite dark at
night. I know that may sound foolish, but if you're used to city or suburbs you
may not be used to how dark it can get out in the country away from the light
pollution of developed areas.

Some folks bring bikes but not many. The crew and staff use bikes to some
degree, but not that many attendees do. Not really needed unless you decide to
camp at the farthest part of the camping area (that's where quiet camp is).
From that location it's about a 15 to 20 minute level walk to the event area at
a moderate walking pace. Roadways are dirt/gravel so a mountain bike would not
have a problem but it might be a bit rough for a touring bike with skinny tires.

               Hope that helps

I have to admnit to being a more avid walker than most people. But I make
the walk from the very farthest reaches of the camp to the stage area in less
than 10 minutes. So I think 15 is probably closer to what most people do than
20. I suspect that only the slowest walkers would take a full 20 minutes.

We have several friends coming this year for the first time. As we've worked all
the festivals at Black Oak, we've been in Bear Camp w/ the other workers and
have no idea what the pluses and minuses are to the various camping areas.. Any
thoughts that I may pass on to them?

As I said in an earlier post, most of the camping is in full sun. The
shady spots fill up fast. You want to bring shade creating devices with you.

Hi Sherry,

Let me give you my opinion on the camping options available at the festival.

RIVERSIDE

Riverside is the nicest and most popular but has some drawbacks.  It is the only one that has abundant shade in most sections which in hot years is a big consideration.  Other than at set up and tear down times, vehicles are not allowed in the area.  In other words you can drive in to drop your stuff off but then must move your vehicle to a parking lot for the duration of the festival.  Since it is the most popular, it is also the most crowded.  Be prepared to be elbow to elbow (tent to tent?) with your neighbors.  For some this is a feature (make new friends) for others a detractant (no privacy).  While there are many level places to pitch a tent, much of the area is sloping which I find tough for sleeping.  This campground also is where the Arlo Hagler and Revival stages are so you can hear some good music right from your camp site if you set up near one of them.  Riverside tends to have the most spontaneous activity meaning that the party goes pretty late.  If you desire 8 hours of sleep and can't block out extraneous noise it's not the best place to be.  It is the closest campground to the event area and the river and is very near the shower building.  It fills fast on Friday so if you are aiming for it, arrive early.

CAMPING MEADOW

The rest of the camping is in what I call the "camping meadow".  This is a flat field about a quarter mile long and maybe 200-300 yards wide.  In general this is open field camping with little shade.  It is divided into rough areas designed to meet various needs which I'll describe below.  Vehicles (cars, trucks, RV's, etc) are permitted in your camp site.  The event area is accessed from the one end of this meadow (through a parking lot).  That end is the most crowded and as you move farther and farther away from that end the camping density diminishes.  You can see a map at http://www.cumuluspresents.com/kate/maps_directions.html. The meadow runs NW to SE but since it parallels US-101 I think of it as N to S.  the event area (vendors, main stage, first aid, etc.) is at the north end.  Other than a few trees scattered around, the only shade is along the western edge where it is adjacent to a wooded area.  If you snuggle up to that tree line you'll get afternoon shade.  T

The areas described below are all in this meadow in order starting with the area closest to the event area.

FAMILY CAMP

This area is roped off.  It is for families with kids.  It is adjacent to the Riverside campground and some shade can be found.  It is close to the showers and as I understand the new Utah stage (Utahopia?) will be near this area.  If you have kids with you this may be a good choice.

MEADOWLANDS CAR CAMP

This area makes up the bulk of the real estate available for camping.  There is one wooded area in a hollow that is reserved for Crew and Staff so if you see a nice wooded area in the middle of the meadow it's probably that reserved area.  In general though it's full sun all day but level and you can have your vehicle with you. As mentioned above afternoon shade can be found along the western edge or under one of the trees scattered around.  The camping here is less "urban" than riverside.  More like the suburbs of the camping options.

QUIET CAMP

Quiet camp is at the farthest end of the meadow.  It does have some good shade trees that you can get under.  Usually it is very roomy there with plenty of elbow room, and is the most peaceful area.  Fewest people, and a concerted effort to keep it peaceful.  You won't have late night jams or noisy neighbors at night.  It is about a 15 minute walk from this location to the food court/main stage area assuming you don't stop along the way to visit or listen in on some jamming.  They do run a golf cart shuttle service through the campground for those that need a lift.

    Hope that helps  -- Dan

PS - for those that don't know, Bear Camp that Sherry mentioned is a backstage camping area for performers and staff. -- DH

Thanks, Dan. That was comprehensive. I've passed it along to a friend of

thanks dan,

I knew someone could explain it much better than I could have.. Other than the
high density around the smaller stages, I really didn't pay too much attention
to the other areas.. I've passed on your information that I'm sure will be very
helpful to my friends.. I've already given the shade structure warning.

Hello,
I am looking for a ride from Berkeley. I can help pay for gas. I'd like to
arrive as early Friday morning as possible to set up camp. I do not work on
Friday or Monday so I can leave as early as possible Friday morning and come
back Monday morning.

Hi Tracey,

Your message has been posted in the messages area. For best results add a row
to our "rides wanted" list. To do this:

1) Logon to the web site at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KateWolfFestival

2) Click on "Database" in left hand menu

3) Click on the "Rides Wanted" table name

4) Click on "Add Record" (it's to the right of the "Search" button)

5) Fill in the form and press the "Add record" button at the bottom.

Once you get hooked up with a ride, let me know and I'll delete your entry in
the rides wanted list.

                                 Dan

Hi Dan,

Please take a look at our "Ticket Market" on the Yahoo Groups page for this
group. There is an entry from Doug who is looking to sell 2 tickets. If that
doesn't work out, add an entry for your request to buy tickets so those that may
have extras can find you.

Here's how....

1) Logon to the web site at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KateWolfFestival

2) Click on "Database" in left hand menu

3) Click on the "Ticket Market" table name

4) Click on "Add Record" (it's to the right of the "Search" button)

5) Fill in the form and press the "Add record" button at the bottom.

Once you get your tickets, let me know and I'll delete your entry in
the list.

Anyone know the Festivals policy on photographers, or camers?

I'm one of several official KW festival photographers. No video or audio recording devices are allowed in the concert bowl due to artists' recording contracts. I don't think there's any restriction on taking still photos from the audience. And of course there is plenty of opportunity for photographing camp life, including jam sessions. Always remember to be kind and courteous, or you'll give photographers a bad name.

You can see my festival photos at www.nwilsonphoto.com/events/katewolf.htm

2008 photos are almost ready. I have over 1500 shots left to select from, polish and publish to the site. I'll probably put up some camp life shots first, then performances, vendors and audience shots.

Nick

Kate Wolf readies another eye-popping lineup

Submitted by druby on 12/10/2008
Keywords: Array, Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival

Every year I rave about the great lineups set for the Kate Wolf
Memorial Music Festival, the laid-back northern California event
honoring the late, great California singer-songwriter.
This year is
shaping up no differently after the festival's initial lineup
announcement this week.

The lineup includes Three Girls and Their Buddy (Emmylou Harris, Patty
Griffin, Shawn Colvin and Buddy Miller), Richard Thompson, Mavis
Staples, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women,
Railroad Earth, Riders in the Sky, Chris Smither and more. There will
also be a musical tribute to festival hero Utah Phillips including the
late songwriter's son Duncan Phillips and friends.

That's a strong roots lineup for most any festival, and especially
impressive at an only moderately well known regional folk festival. As
I have written before, if you are anywhere near to Mendocino County in
June, this is one festival not to miss.
The 2009 festival takes place
at Black Oak Ranch in Laytonville CA on June 26-28.

Kate Wolf’s Catalog of Folk Albums from Kaleidoscope Records to Be Reissued on Collectors’ Choice Music

June 2, 2009 by DirtyLinen

LOS ANGELES, Calif. Kate Wolf was a welcome presence in the late ’70s and mid-’80s folk scene. Her blend of folk, country and pop helped pave the way for artists like Nanci Griffith and Mary-Chapin Carpenter. Wolf never had a hit single, and in fact the All Music Guide points out that “her style is one that tends to grow on listeners over time, as Wolf is not about flash. Her songs, characterized by a strong narrative thread, are about the ebbs and flows of adult life, in terms that are neither overly sentimental not mundane.” As late singer-songwriter Utah Phillips once introduced her, “I’d like you to meet Kate Wolf. She owns herself.”

Wolf died of leukemia in December 1986 at the age of 44, leaving behind a vast catalog of albums. Five of those albums Back Roads, Lines on Paper, Safe at Anchor, Give Yourself to Love and The Wind Blows Wild will be reissued on CD by Collectors’ Choice Music on July 7, 2009.

Wolf’s legacy is renewed and commemorated every year with the Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival in her native Northern California. That area is the backdrop to many of her songs, which tackle themes of family, love and loss with uncommon sensitivity and insight. It’s music for folks with open ears, hearts and minds.

Hi,

The short answer is around 3:30 or 4:00 am. There is one person whom I know
very well by sight but for the life of me I can't recall his name, that
prides himself on always being first in line. Each year he comes a bit
earlier to assure that honor and I, being a but more sleep oriented tend to
let him. Now don't be fooled by this. You can come much later and still
find attractive seating. I tend to line up between 4:00 am and 4:30 and am
usually between number 10 and 20 in line which is fine for my needs. I
guess it all depends on how critical your needs are. If you absolutely have
to be in the first row, dead center in front of the stage, better be in line
by 3:30 or 4:00. If you're not as picky, adjust accordingly

Having said all of that, let me go over a few other things that are good to
know:

1) There are two lines. One is at the riverside campground entrance to the
music meadow and the other is at the parking lot entrance. The parking lot
entrance line tends to be a little shorter

2) Except on Friday (noon opening as I recall) you must remain with your
stuff in line. No just leaving a chair to hold your place in line. Potty
breaks are allowed. I look at it this way. If your chair was in line
without you, it can go let in according to its place in line, but you can't
go in with it. :-)

3) Each person in line is allowed to bring in 4 chairs. So one person in
line can reserve space for 4 people. What is no longer allowed (starting
this year) is for one person to wait in line (with or without 4 chairs),
then just before the gate opens 15 friends show up each carrying 4 chairs.
If you need space for 5 to 8 people, then 2 must wait in line. For 9 to 12
- 3 people, etc.

4) The vendor area (where the coffee is) is not open till around 7:00. So
you can't use the vendors to caffeinate yourself while waiting in line.

5) The parking lot line forms about 200 yd farther from the music meadow
gate then the Campground line. To compensate for this the parking lot line
"moves up" to the music meadow gate about 15 to 30 minutes before the music
meadow opens, equalizing it with the campground line.

6) Unlike some "mad dash - foot race" festivals, this one has an excellent
process for when the gate opens at 7:00 am. Peter (head of security)
releases 5 or 6 people from each line at a time at 30 to 60 second
intervals. So you are only competing with a hand full of others in that
"release" and not racing hundreds of folks. It's actually very civilized.
No one gets trammeled, no one gets hurt, and even if you're slow, people in
releases after yours will be hard pressed to pass you by.

7) Please pay attention to rules on blankets and chairs on the main web
site. During the "set up" hours each morning there are well trained staff
in the music meadow to deal with problems. They also do a good job keeping
people from being too creative in opening up space by moving other folks
things. Some small adjustments are permitted to close up gaps, but major
shifting is stopped. However, until the area around me fills in, I tend to
stay around to help folks who might not understand this rule. There are no
"pre-marked" spaces.

8) You must remove ALL of your gear each evening and start over the next
day. Just before 7:00 am, security gathers up all abandoned items in the
music meadow and piles it on a tree stump near the back.

9) Security prevents vendors, artists, and staff members from "inventing"
other entrances to the music meadow from the sides or back stage during the
morning set up period.

Hope that helps, and if you have more questions feel free to ask

			 Dan
