i hear that. i haven't gotten the words to tori's latest enough to
really get what she's talking about. and frankly, i often don't get
her lyrics, since the first cd. but i'm interested in trying to hear
her social criticism, so i'll read and listen some more! i agree that
ani is very in-your-face. but mostly i like that. i also think she is
so overwhelmed by the atrocities going on right now, that she does in
fact feel like everything sucks. and i guess i forgive her for that
because i kinda agree that a lot is really fucked up lately... but i
haven't listened to reveling/reckoning enough to comment. it didn't
hold onto me musically so i let it go. i do intend to listen more
eventually, just like scarlet's walk. i also agree that is usually
more powerful to talk about how to make changes than to simply talk
about how bad things are. but also, it's important to really look at
how bad things are and feel the pain associated with that if you're
ever going to get to the change part. it's hard to want to make
changes if you are so blind to the problems that you feel like
everything's okay, or even if you ignore the pain that the problem
create. does that make sense? for example, sometimes in a conflict
with a friend, all you really need from them is for them to really get
the pain you're in over something. if they got that, you'd trust them
more, you'd have hope that they'd consider your feelings in the future.
and if they never hear you, you can't even get to the change part. i
think sometimes ani is just stuck on the feel-this-dammit part, maybe
because so few people in this culture actually feel and see the painful
parts of this society. the media is all focused on getting us out of
our bodies to buy shit and we walk around not feeling the pain and not
being present enough to make powerful decisions. anyhoo... i'd love
to see the Render dvd... i'm new to dvd's in general, but you're an
avid collector! that's why you made such a great bootleg page for me!
okay, tangent. i get what you're saying. and there's some more
thoughts about it...
peace everybody,
kristi

well, I don't find Tori depressing.... Scarlet's Walk I think is a social
criticism but I think Tori says - this is how things are and if we think
about that we can work to change it. Sometimes I feel that Ani is so
in-your-face everything-sucks with nothing I find uplifting. I feel that she
just says - this is how things are and it sucks. Period. I just think she is
angrier than Tori maybe... I don't find your music depressing probably for
several reasons... I think your stuff has a positive thread in it - "I'm not
a hooker, I'm a healer" or "maybe someday you'll learn how to fall in love"
-- I think your music takes a bad situation but says, look there's still
something else than just this situation.... also, as you said, you are so
bright and upbeat at your shows that it gives the songs more of an upbeat
feel. Lately from Ani I've just felt negativity... in the Render dvd she gets
pissed at the fans for singing along to Dilate... Self-Evident - which is an
amazing piece of poetry, don't get me wrong - just makes me sad... she makes
some very good points in that song but to me it comes off as everything
sucks... there's not much in the way of look, this is how we make things
better as a people. A little about us getting out of the oil business and
going back to touring in train cars but not really much else...
One song that is recent Ani that I love is Grey from the Revelling/Reckoning
cds but it's so sad... it just sounds like she is thoroughly depressed
because her relationship got messy.... it makes me cry. Evolve to me seemed
like 10 more songs about her crappy relationship... I think it's a recent
trend in her music... even To The Teeth I didn't find depressing because I
think she still had a will to change things and say, look if we get rid of
the goddamn guns, this shit won't happen... I think her last couple cds have
just come off as defeatist... there's just something that's turning me off
about her lately.

do you think tori is depressing? i'm wondering what about ani sounds
depressing to you. because i am not really hearing it that way... and
this is an important issue to me, because in the past many people have
told me my music is really depressing to them. now, that hasn't
happened as much since i've been touring full-time, which i think has
to do with my stage banter-performance energy being too upbeat to hear
songs as so depressing... but anyhoo, this is just an interesting
topic to me... to me, ani's song "in the way" is not at all
depressing, but really liberating and revolutionary about healing in
relationships. so i'm curious about your take on it...
tah-dah. a full-fledged discussion group topic! take it on, people!

ditto. It was on sale at Target so I picked it up... I like a lot of the
lyrics but not necessarily the songs themselves. It really sounds depressing
to me :( I still have not figured out if her and her husband are still
together or not - all her relationship songs lately have been sad so I'm
curious... but I will probably try to re-listen to it once I pry Tori out of

muah ha ha ha ha (maniacal laughter knowing i've tortured Lisa)
just kidding. there'll be more shows and i know you'll be there!
so yeah...
i have actually been really not into many of Ani's later albums. i
loved them all very thoroughly until little plastic castles, the first
of her albums that actually had songs i really DISliked on it. i
couldn't believe it. certainly i'd had favorites before, and therefore
ones that were less than favorite, but to actually cringe from hearing
an ani song was truly a surprise to me. i do love some of little
plastic castles. and i do love a few songs on each album after that.
but evolve was actually a pleasant surprise for me, in that not a
single song made me cringe, and i really really got excited about 4 or
5 songs on the album. i do have some negative criticism of the album,
but i really really like it better than most of her recent stuff.
Slide has got to be one of my all-time favorite songs even though the
lyrical content lacks cohesion to me. the music of it is just
brilliant. and the lyrics and music of the song Evolve are fab. and
the lyrics of In the Way are profound. so i am more into ani's latest
than i'd expected. of course i buy them all anyway. even with my
various disappointment in her, i have the utmost respect for the woman.
whooo hooo for the cd version of With Mouth and Hands!!! you rock,
Lisa!!!
yay. could we get any input from the other 5 people on this list? i'd
love to hear from y'all.
blessings,
kristi

Kristi - what do you think of Ani's Evolve?? I listened to it once and found
it terribly depressing.... I have just been feeling un-Ani-ish these days....

hey everybody,
if you're on this list you probably already know about the tour diary,
but i thought in case you don't know...here is my latest entry. check
the website if you want more tour diary info.
xo -k
may 7, 2003
whoa - my goodness! i KNOW
it's been TOO long since i've written in here. the end of the tour was
crazy busy and then i got home and things are incredibly strange when
you get home from a long trip. you have to re-enter your life, your
love, your home, your schedule, your community. it's a lot of work.
so i've gone through 6 weeks of mail and messages and catching up.
i've rested a little. i've tried to get used to home life. i'm
starting to book shows and such again. we had a show in the bay area
thursday night. Littlebird and i played together for the first time
since...March 6th! can you believe that? 2 months! it was an outside
gig and we were so happy it didn't rain, but it did get awfully cold
when the sun went down. frozen fingers don't play quite as well as
warm ones.
so let's see...i listened to Ani's Evolve so much during the last leg
of that tour. i drove SO much, a total of 8,259 miles in 40 days, for
26 shows! I played in 13 states, drove through 24 plus Canada and only
spent one night in a hotel! phew!
i wandered around ABQ a bit the day after that Madrid gig. it was
actually really really sunny and hot there, even though i'd seen hail
and snow the night before just 40 miles north. the show at Kelly's was
nice too. and then i drove to Tucson where my friends complained
because i was staying so short a time. the show in Tucson was
FABULOUS!! yay for all my Tucson fans who came out to support me. it
was so much fun to see you all. i really like Vaudeville Cabaret. i'd
never played there before and it was really a fun venue. my friends
and i all went to the Grill before AND after the Vaudeville show! it's
practically next door and it's the only restaurant open 24 hours (that
i know of) in Tucson. and they have fabulous coffee shakes. yum.
next morn my friends and i went to Gus Balon's, which you know is one
of my favorite breakfast places in the country(!). then i drove away
:( to San Diego :) for a show at Claire de Lune's, a cafe with
excellent food! i was tired from lack of sleep and so much driving.
so as i set up i felt kinda negative about playing. but of course my
mood changed once i started playing. i love performing and connecting
with people! my friend Ben Carson came and played guitar for me on
Gillian Welch's Everything is Free. i played a full set and then took
a break and then my friend Matt Silvia came and played a song of his
and then we did Indigo Girls' Kid Fears and Incubus' The Warmth. then
i played solo and asked him back at the end to accompany me on Give
even though i'd already done it in the first set... it was a two-Give
night. it's always great to hang out with my friends all over the
country. it's amazing how much more i get to see them now that i tour
nationally so much of the time!
i'm working on a solo northwest tour in august-september (Littlebird
will be training to be a dog trainer!), a duo southwest tour in october
and another cross-country tour in november, as Littlebird and i move to
Rhode Island!
i gotta lot a work to do!
meanwhile, the bound single proof has STILL not arrived. i hate to
tell you this icky news. we don't know what is going on with it. i'm
trying to at least find out what is going on, and then we may have to
start over, re-design the cover with a new company, to get the thing
duplicated for you all! we've been SO frustrated by this! we thought
you'd all have bound in your hands by March, and it's May and no where
in sight! eeeek. so i'm /hoping/ that i will be sending bound singles
out by summer's end. keep your fingers crossed for me.
speaking of bound singles...thanks to EVERYONE who has donated to the
next cd, The Mule. we are one third of the way to completely funding
the whole project. when we get to half we will go into the studio
(we're hoping to record in December) and when we get to three quarters
will will duplicate it. we're hoping to release it by spring 2004.
keep those donations coming!
what else... it's good to sleep in the same bed every night. i'm home
for a bit now. next month i'm doing a few CA shows. one is a
dance/music collaboration with my long-time friend and collaborator,
Dawn Frank. we'll be showing the piece in Davis. it might turn into a
longer project to be premiered in the fall. i'll also be playing a
house concert in Richmond and one in San Rafael, a queer arts festival
in San Francisco and that sweet Salada Beach Cafe in Pacifica, the one
with the best carrot cake. and our faithful former intern, Sheryl,
will be merch girl for the Salada show -- always a nice thing to have
that cheerleading going on. we haven't seen her in a while, so it will
be a happy little reunion. yay!
thanks to everybody who shows up and buys my cds and gives me priases
on the road. it's a long road, and i'll give you all the thanks and
praises cuz you really rock my world.
love and laughter,
kristi

okay i know this is way later, but i tried and tried to send this from

finally fixed! so here is my untimely response to that last post...

LOL. did you know that that single (hey micki you're so fine...) was
THE first recording i ever bought? i was 9. it was a big hit. Toni
Basil. i got the 45. that totally cracked me up!
thanks for the cheerleading. it's true, i can always use it when i'm
out on the road and when i'm booking. it's just plan hard work. 14
hours driving yesterday. morning yoga, it's true! 5 hours driving
today (felt like nothing!) then a no-pay gig to not-that-interested
people at a bar in a town about 400 people big. used to be a ghost
town. gotta play there when it's a better season and tourists are
there to spend money. anyhoo, then i drove another hour to abq to find
out where i was going to stay that night. eeek. so now i'm in the
empty apt of someone i've never met, but this is the second time i've
slept in her bed. weird, no?
yep, can't wait for my own bed!

What the heck!?!? I'm pissed. I just tried to send that message in

For those on the west coast, I just saw Kristi and Littlebird 4 nights in a
row down here in San Diego. It was lovely :) Kristi's friend Ben showed up at
Lestat's on Sunday and at Claire's last night to join Kristi and LilB for a
lovely rendition of Gillian Welch's Everything is Free. Also last night was a
new Kristi song called Day of Rain! woohoo :)
my current Kristi show count is 17 :)

yep! I actually have an extra copy of Brave Enough that I think I may send to
RBR.... oh Hammel on Trial was awful.... really terrible... sucked big time.
There wasn't a person in the crowd around me that liked him either. He kind
of does white-boy talking rap thing while playing one really loud chord on
the guitar. Ani must have been smoking some serious weed the night she
decided to have him open for her...

Was Hammel on Trial really terrible? Cause they must be with her
for the whole tour cause she's got two dates here on the east coast
in march with them...too bad it's a shame. Yeah, Kristi would work
well with her I think too...Now all we need is for these big talents
to realize and acknowledge that Kristi has big talent potential to be
huge and she needs their help! hhmmmm...
I was thinking Ani.... Ani fans would probably really like Kristi :) much
better than that horrible Hammel on Trial I saw open up for Ani :P

So folks, I'm interested in your opinions: Who do you think Kristi
would be perfect to open for in concert? It's a difficult one for me
to answer myself. I kinda think Tori Amos would be a good one but
they may be too similar? I dunno...J.Lo is always an option as well.
What do you think?
hey there discussion group about me!
i wanna hear some discussion! so anyhoo, i'm on this here list just in
case one of you asks a question that only i'd know the answer to. so start

hi everyone :)
just wanted to report on the details of last night's last-minute
house concert! It was very fun... only about 10 of us there but very
nice and cozy and Kevin was a very good host. Kristi and Littlebird
sounded wonderful, as usual. And I somehow got elevated from #1-fan
status to stalker status ;) hmmmm...
anyway, Kristi let me write the set list which was lots of fun :) so
the songs done were (in no particular order): carry it on, the mule,
for josh, all I want (joni mitchell cover), maiden and her master,
comeback, give, rise, fly, honor, roadsong, my name, hooker, see you
sweet, through that door, procrastination (Lilb's song with Kristi on
piano/backup vocals), silver and even free. Oh and a glimpse of their
planned punk cover of You're So Vain :) Very nice set (if I do say so
myself...)
Kristi and Lilb are in San Diego tonight and I was going to try to
make it but ended up sleeping all day :P (sorry Kristi!)
I am working on my Kristi bootleg page but if anyone has Kristi boots
to trade, let me know!
:) Lisa
hello! just wanted to say hi to the new listees :) Kristi rocks :) anyone
feel like introducing themselves??
:) Lisa (the SoCal fan in the running for seeing Kristi the most, holding at
10 times :)
