Funny, I thought the way I described, saving new programs from mixer page, was
the first
and perhaps only method documented in my K2000 manual. But your method gave
same
result.

That was it, I deleted all program change messages at the top, and the problem
went
away.

I love this feature of being able to see and edit the events in the midi file.
I was wondering
what kind of software would be able to do this.

Thanks, and Thank Kurzweil! This is what I love about the Kurz! Everything can
be seen
and edited.

Hello out there,

I inadvertently spilled some water with a water soluble nutrional powder on the
lower half
of my K2500X keyboard. Since I haven't figured out how to open the keyboard
(which I've
had for about 10 years without a single problem), the water with my nutritional
supplement - a water soluble substance called glutamine - dried inside the
keyboard
causing some (several) of the keys to stop playing or playing inconsistently.
I'd like to be
able to open this keyboard to wipe off and clean what I can to see if it would
correct the
problem.

2 Questions... Anybody have instructions re: how to open this keyboard? There
are at least
16 screws. The manuals I've had don't tell me anything. And has anybody spilled
liquids
into the keyboard - any advice? At least it didn't have any sugar.

It's reprehensively expensive to buy a box and mail this somewhere. I used to go
to EPR
which was near me in NY but they moved to Florida - Sweetwater (where I
purchased from)
would be an option. I'm trying to avoid a disastrous repair cost.

Any positive help or advice is greatly appreciated in advance. Thanks.

Do Drum programs eat up a lot of P-Ram? I'm wondering b/c the person who owned
my
K2500rs before me made quite a few drum programs on it. And now I can't seem to
make
a simple patch b/c not enough memory.

Is P-Ram user installable? I installed extra 128 mb of Ram no problem.

Quickest way into a K2500X (well, other than a chainsaw):

1. Place unit on a keyboard stand that will give you access to the
screws on the bottom. Place a sturdy padded surface (table) behind it
to hold the top when you hinge it off. Unplug everything.

2. Consult with your deity of choice for wisdom, guidance and courage.

3. Undo all (and only) the 7 screws across the back that are just at
the seam between top and bottom halves.

4. Underneath, locate the 7 screws that go into groups of three holes
and remove them. Leave all others in place.

5. Each end cap is held on by 6 screws at the ends of the metal body.
Remove only the top one at the back on each.

6. The top is now free, but retained by tabs that slide forward into
slots just inboard from the end caps. Release it by pushing firmly
backwards on the top. It may be stiff, but outright resistance should
be countered with a search for any screws that may have been missed
in the above process. Only a backwards motion will work; lifting and
prying will break things. You may need to loosen the reaming end cap
screws if you need a little more clearance.

7. The top should slide back, but it's still attached by many cables.
Once it's free of the unit, flip it onto its top onto the padded
surface. Tag and label all connecting cables, especially since it's
your first time in here.

8. Consult once again with your favourite higher power (refer to step 2).

9. Consult with this list for how to get the keybed out - I've never
done it, so you're on your own from here, baby.

Enjoy!

Well you are in luck with the glutamine. Completely water soluble and
easily removed once you get in there. Be sure and let it dry completely
before zipping it up, which a repair shop won't have room or time to let it
dry for a week. You are better off opening it yourself and cleaning it
carefully and drying it carefully for a week.
WASH with plain DISTILLED water. (Glutamine will congeal with pH
changes-like soaps and cleaning solutions so.. plain water. I'm a chemist
also.)

Disasemble the keyboard to wash/clean the sticky mechanical parts, don't get
water all over everything.

The keys part is a quasi-separate tray and the the spill should not have
extended into the boards and electronics deeper down (but check anyway).
(Unless you dumped the entire glass between two keys rapidly...)

You may vacuum or blow dry (LOW heat) the excess water as you apply it. In
other words don't overfill the key tray. I believe there are some holes in
the key tray which you might cover with tape for safety?

The electronics will be just fine. The only electronic item injured by
plain water is electrolytic Caps. There are none in the keyboard area so
you won't have any problems. Electrolytic Capacitors (possibly on the power
supply, but usually sealed on the bottom of the Cap.) will be injured by
using the cap before it dries. The dry time on an electrolytic Cap is about
4 weeks but they will dry. Do not overheat with a hair dryer. a low power
computer fan is plenty.
Complete details for drying electronics can be found in QST magazine (HAM
radio) where the problem occurs frequently and proper recovery is critical,
(emergency communications). I'll dig this out if you need it and email it to
you but article is about 5-6 years old and deep in my piles.

Exposed metal (like springs and screws can rust) but quick drying (hours)
of these items prevents this.
I don't recommend WD40 (actually nothing more than Kerosene) type
products into the mechanism to lubricate. They will only attract dirt later
and you will be back in there with a more difficult clean up later.
I don't have a 2500 (the only one I don't have) so, someone else will
guide you inside.

This is encouragement to get started yourself :-) Take your time and
good luck.

david in raleigh.

Looks like others are helping get it open already!

I'm experiencing full velocity on the F4 key regardless of how light I may
strike the key.
Additionally it sends this full velocity message thru midi output.
This is only manifests on this key and no other. Is the tip of the hammer broken
or the
surface that it strikes ? Any one else experienced this ? Any ideas on what the
problem is
and how to repair it ?

... on a seperate issue, I have some buttons (setup & quick access) that when
depressed
nothing happens along with several on the calculator grid.
How do you repair this problem ? Any info greatly appreciated .... TIA

The surface that is struck is probably torn or dirty. It's called a
contact. I replace damaged contacts. The keyboard has to be opened to
accomplish this.
Sounds like some of your buttons need to be replaced as well. A trip to
the Kurz Doctor is probably in order unless you feel real confident at
disassembly and repair. Buttons are a might more involved that contacts.

In addition to this you might try using a can of compressed air with
one of those small "straws" to help direct it.

I would try is first without any disassembly by blowing it between the
keys. If the powdered material has dried there can't be very much, you
might be able to disperse it from the critical areas.

If that doesn't work, I would use a very small amount of distilled
water between the keys and use the canned air again. Blow-in some
water and let it have a few moments to disolve the powder (again).
Then blow it dry. I would try this repeatedly. In general try not to
blow the water toward the electronics.

BE SURE TO LET IT DRY OUT! Use your judgement. You shouldn't need to
use much water.

If this didn't work I would remove the top as descibed earlier by
Stephanie, then repeat the cleaning procedure but with better access
to the keyboard.

Hope this helps!

The keyboard determines the "velocity" by measuring the time
differintial between the actuation of 2 contacts (one "early" contact
and one "late" contact on each key). One of them is malfunctioning
causing Kurz to think that you are striking the key at MAX velocity.

You might get lucky and just have a dirty contact. Try the cleaning
procedure outlined in the "spilled liquid" thread.

Loops are never really recommended that you let them go in loop and go
mode...yeah, I know, thats how most of us have done this for YEARS, but more
than likely if you are playing against any other clocked source, you quickly
find that you'll start fading quickly no matter how precise your edits were.

The recommended way of doing this is to retrigger the loop every measure.

And that leads to the sequencer and the arrange page.

Use a sequence to retrigger the loop every measure and it will be in perfect
time...and if you hit stop on the sequencer, the loop stops (duh!). Using the
arrange page, you can add more to the loops and layer them up (read the chapter
on this subject!).

But if you still want to do it the other way, look into setting up keyzones and
set your trigger key and a blank note to an adjacent key...and then set up that
keyzone to be mono -- that will cut the other off.

So there are a few ways to do it. Good luck!

Very clever with the keyzones Cliff!
I also need to retrigger every measure which is easy with a sequencer.

I have a K2500XS AES and the battery is extremely low something like 0.5 or so.
I have been putting off changing it as I have nothing saved on it anyway. I
don't know if the battery goes completely out that I have anything to fear or
not. It will be my first experience with a battery change.

A couple of days ago or so everything comes on as usual but I get no sound in
either the head set or speakers. Could this be directly related to the low
battery. I hope that's all it is. I did notice a few days or so before the no
sound that when I turned on the power it went thru some sort of reboot process
that I had never seen before. I figured it was due to the low battery. Two days
later I had no sound in speakers or headphones.

Thanks for any insight. No I have not checked the manual yet but just thought I
would ask. Thanks for listning.-

You can use my Midi Companion (
http://www.ravenware.com/music/Companion_Doc.html ). It will read
all the patch names from your Kurzweil. Then you can copy them from
the Companion and paste them in to Logic.
Specific instructions are here;

Should work. Works for me.

I have a K2500XS AES. My battery is flagging me low voltage at 0.5 and it was so
low that it prompted a reboot of my system when I turned it on. I have been
putting off changing it because I am don't feel qualified. Recently the unit
powers up but now I get "NO SOUND" from the speakers or head set. Everything
else displays normally. I'm wondering if this is a function of the low battery
or something more serious.

Respectfully I realize to gain such insight to my problem I guess this means I
may have to crack the code of THE BOOK and "read the fantastic manual" but I
thought I would ask my trusty kurz friends.

I wish it were a K2600 so I could escape dying of pure pleasure before the
inevitable honor of changing out the battery.

I'm not worried about any memory loss on the creative side as nothing of value
is stored but I hope I have not done the unit any harm or loose anything of
value with the low battery or have I?

So back to my main question: Does low battery equate to loss of all sound or is
it more involved than that. Maybe I just accidentally pushed a mute button or
something. Smile

Again any help aside or including the obvious belabored battery change out in
solving my sound problem would be greatly appreciated.

Nah -- the battery just stores USER objects.

So if you have anything loaded, you'll jsut have to load them again.

Its pretty painless.

I don't know about the no sound problem, but you might want to just go ahead and
change the batteries and see what happens. If the sound doesn't re-appear, you
might want to see about reinstalling the OS. Its a simple proceedure...grab the
appropriate discs and stick them in while starting up and make sure you do them
in order. If you don't have them, you can grab them off the

      KurzweilMusicSystems.com

website...it will have the instructions with them. I've never heard of a low
battery corrupting the OS, but who knows :-)

Good Luck

low that it prompted a reboot of my system when I turned it on. I have been
putting off changing it because I am don't feel qualified.

Rudy

Michael,

Saved material is safe for about two weeks after the low voltage signal
appears.

I'm not really sure that a weak battery would cause the problems you
describe but to replace the battery is no big deal. I replace mine when
the unit is running to make sure nothing is lost. There's a door
underneath the unit that exposes the batteries. I lay with my back on
the floor and can get to the door quite easily. Have a flashlight handy
and a friend to hold it if possible because you only have two hands.
Anyway, open the door, take the old batteries out (3 AA I think) and put
the new batteries in. Make sure polarity is correct. That's it. It's
really no big deal. Rechargables are specifically not recommended
because of longevity issues.

If it freaks you to do it when the unit is turned on, the batteries can
be replaced when the unit is turned off and a capacitor will keep saved
stuff for about 30 seconds after the old batteries have been removed and
while the replacement is being accomplished. Make sure you have
replacements at hand if you do it this way.

Tell me how it works.

Hi Kurzmates,
I'm Shai, keyboard player of the band Gin.
For a new song of ours, I am looking for a chromatically playable sound
effect. I own a K2000 with Orch ROM.

I need two variations of the Sound Effect:
1) harsh version, to resemble the noise of a steam damper or air damper: The
kind that is heard when a door opens in a public bus, or in trucks when
they're lifting their back box.
2) lighter version, can be the sound heard when a long object rotates
through the air, i.e. a lasso, a sling or a boomerang;
It should create an acceleration effect, preferably with speed control
through modulation.

The sound will be overdubbed to top an existing "tremolo Wurlitzer" patch.
The help from each and everyone of you would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Shai

Great Cliff !!

Both options

The second option i worked on before: but did not
think of mono mode

I had a lame option: I used altered drum tracks to get
a beat to my wind playing.
I used ramp the volume down , and hit a panic button..

Hi Galen:

Looking at your shopping list and your statement that you're a newbie
starting from scratch, you've got a very deluxe system here. Sibelius
is a bit of a mouthful for a beginner, and taming it to drive two
synths to the point that they "just work" can be a little daunting.

Please forgive me if the following sounds simplistic or patronising;
I have no idea of your expertise level so am simply trying to present
information that will work. Other readers may have other
recommendations - midi is complex and versatile.

The PowerMac G4 can do everything that a G5 can do with regard to
MIDI; it will not alter how you hook stuff together nor make it any
easier or harder to use.

You don't mention a MIDI interface. you will need one. It's a box
with a bunch of MIDI ports on it and a USB port for connecting to
your computer. Many musical instrument stores sell them, and they
show up on eBay as well. While you can daisy-chain two keyboards
together, life will be simpler if you get a two-port midi interface
(two in, two out)l even a simple box like the M-Audio Midisport 2x2
will work well.

Install the driver for your midi interface; yes, I know it's a Mac
but it still needs you to install this so it can communicate with
your interface.

Connect the midi box USB port to your computer with a regular USB
A-to-B cable. Use one of the ports on the computer itself; don't plug
it into a USB hub or the spare port on your keyboard. (Why? Because
many such midi boxes are powered via USB and there may not be enough
power available to drive your box.)

Midi ports are unidirectional; the OUT from your interface goes to
the IN on the keyboard and lets your computer play the keyboard. OUT
from the keyboard goes to the corresponding IN on the MIDI interface
so what you play on the keyboard can be recorded on the computer. Use
regular MIDI cables for these, widely available at music stores.

Once you have all the wiring in place you need to tell your Mac
exactly what you've got. Use Audio Midi Setup
(/Applications/Utilities folder) which gives you a nice graphical
interface for drawing all the connections you just made.

Presumably you have some way to hear the audio from your keyboards
(mixer, amp, speakers, headphones). Get that working, then click the
Test button in Audio Midi Setup. You should hear a quick blast of
many notes from each keyboard, indicating that the keyboards can
actually receive midi being transmitted from the computer.

You'll now have to fire up Sibelius and talk to the Sibelius experts
to learn how to configure it to use CoreMIDI (the Apple MIDI system,
not the built-in QuickTime synth) and get it going with two keyboards.

Enjoy!

Hello,

In Setup Mode: check LocalKbdCh (MIDI Receive page)
In Program Mode Do you have a meaningfull program active on the selected
channel?

You can check MIDI activity on the MONITOR (push both central soft switches
under LCD simultaneously to get into MONITOR; then select the appropriate
monitor)

If all this does not bring any sound, a Hard Reset might!

Did you try outputs A, B or C ? (no effects!)

Thanks Erwin

I turned on the K2500 to attempt your suggestions but the screen read "waking up
system followed by please wait and then a blue screen with no data. I waited for
20 min followed by other attempts only to get the same results. I guess I will
have to change the battery and see what happens next. I must admit that I did
not expect the LCD would be blank due to low battery.

Hello Rudy,

Looks like your System got corrupted. Did you try to get into diagnostics
mode by pressing and releasing the 'Exit' button while "Please wait ... " is
displayed on the LCD?
If you can get to the screen "K2500 Boot Loader ... ", first try a Hard
Reset. If that doesn't help, you could proceed to Install System from the
boot loader.
The fact that your Battery went low might be indicating a problem with PRAM.
Do you have extra PRAM installed. If so, try removing it.

Good luck,

PS: As I am still on Clif's blacklist (must be a life sentence), this can
take about half a day or even more to reach the list. Very motivating
indeed, Clif !!

First, thanks to all the offers of assistance while I was on tour without my
equipment because of Katrina's wicked ways. I did find a Kurzweil PC-88 at a
church I was scheduled to play and they permitted me to borrow it for the
duration of the tour.

My PC2x did survive the flood, untouched by water. Now however, I have
purchased the classic keys expansion card in New Orleans recently, but did not
have
the keyboard with me at the time. Now I am in St. Louis MO with a need to
install the card. Can I do this myself? Is there someone close that can do it
for me ? The Kurzweil "technician" in St. Louis hasn't done an installation
AND wants $35 up front -- to start. I would rather not do it myself, but my
confidence in this technician is not very high -- based on my first impression.
Additionally I haven't used it with my G3 as of yet so I am not quite sure of
the connections needed to update the keyboard.

My travels will take me to Indianapolis next Sunday for a few days, so
anywhere inbetween St. Louis and Indianapolis (or anywhere relatively close) can
be
traveled to.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi Kurzmates,
I'm Shai, keyboard player of the band Gin.
I'm looking for the following two K2000 (Orch ROM) FX Patches,

1) harsh air damper sound, to resemble the noise of a steam valve or
pressured air valve: The kind that's heard when a door opens in a public
bus, or in trucks when they lift the back box.
2) the sound, heard when a long object rotates
through the air, i.e. a lasso, a sling or a boomerang;
It should preferably accelerate according to speed control
through modulation.

The help from everyone of you would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Shai
