I've prob. answered my own question, but want to make sure.

I'm awaiting delivery of a Roland A90EX controller as the main workhorse for
my setup. Although it has 64 note polyphony for its own internal sounds,
would this limit its *send* polyphony to a module having 128 note polyphony?
This wouldn't make much sense as all this time I've been using my K2500s as
a controller for other 128 voice synths without noticible problems. Thanks

Hello-

After owning a PC88MX for several years, we have upgraded to the K2600xs.
Very impressive instrument.

One problem:

When I updated the ROM Objects from the Kurzweil website to the current 3.0
baseblocks and the 1.01 Options, the added sounds do not work properly. Most
are absent entirely, some play a few keystrokes and quit, and many just
breakup when played.

Master Page>Intonation Parameter:
#18- Obj B 3.0
#19- Obj C 1.01
#20- Obj 0 1.01
#21- Obj L 1.01
#22- rom3v1.27

Thanks in advance for any ideas,

Jim Hall

Hello everyone.
I have a new problem here that I hope someone will be able to help me with.
Is anyone on this list using a Roland VSR-880 midied with their K2500? Or on
of the other Roland VS series digital recorders?

This is what I want to do...
While in song mode on the K2500, I want to be able to click on RECORD/PLAY on
the Roland VSR-880 and have the K2500 start playing automatically. That way,
i will know that all tracks will be recorded in the same measures/time. I'm
using the internal sequencer on the K2500, so I guess basically, I need the
VSR-880 to send a command of PLAY to the K2500 when I hit PLAY on the
VSR-880. This makes sense?
Anyone know if this is possible? Unfortunately, I'm not too well versed on
midi. I've been reading both manuals to get information on this feature, but
I have not been able to figure it out.
Thanks

We really need more info.

Are you connected via MIDI to a computer?
If so, select LOCAL ON on the MIDI XMIT page. Your computer may be
resetting the values.

Take Care,

I've repaired the weighted action on my K2500X twice, about a year apart. I
took the entire Kurzweil apart (quite an ordeal). The problems was that the
plastic casing around the weight was cracked and broken. I used plastic
model glue to repair it.

It seems that at one time, the older model K2500Xs had a production line
upgrade to a better weight set.

Two months ago after my key weight broke so did the ENTER key on the mail
control panel shortly after. I found out that my Kurzweil had an older
control panel and the older weight set. So I bought a replacement control
panel ($180 usd) and a new weight set ($65 usd on sale) and spent two days
replacing the old ones.

Of course a K2500 is different.

Hi,

Another question for the list...

My K2500 keyboard action has a few keys that are getting a sloppy
feeling from over-use!

The touch resistance has gone to zero on a few keys that I use for midi
note entry like my 'hi-hat' key...!! I guess I shouldn't hammer them so
hard. Ooops!

Anyone on the list have information as to how to adjust the touch
resistance back to factory spec...????

Thanks in advance,

I have a K2000RS and when sampling the K2000RS own output, using
option "Src:Int", the module not responds (and freezes the MIDI notes
i'm playing during the recording).
The sample, after recording, is empty (only silence).
When sampling Src:Out is OK.
What's happening?

The 2000 series cannot resample itself....errr...it can, just not easily.
This is all documented very well within the sampling supliment to the
manual.

For starters, I've never seen the Src: Int on the 2000 series (could just be
blind :-)...not sure if this is a rack thing or not.

I've always simply patched a cable back to itself when I've wanted to do
this fast, or better yet, hook it up to my computer.

Secondly, MIDI stops processing when you sample on the 2000. You'll not be
able to do anything more with midi until the sampling stops. This means
that you won't be able to sample phrases or arps or loops or any of that
stuff.

Its not the best way to sample, but a lot of us have found work arounds.

Iain,

Thanks for your email! Where did you order the replacement weight sets?

I am not able to buy repair parts from Kurz (some song and dance about
not being a wholesaler and voiding my warrantee)... and am also NOT able
to buy replacement parts from any authorized Kurz repair center without
them doing the repair at $65US/hour and weeks in the black hole of
"we'll get to it when we get to it...".

I feel like I am qualified to do nearly any repair my K2500XS might
require. (The hot end of the soldering iron goes against the solder.
Right?)

Where can I order parts?

I ordered them directly from Kurzweil. I'm not a wholesaler either and they
didn't seem to care. They took my money. Of course I don't have a warranty,
so doing repairs myself wouldn't be a problem with that. And, if I
accidently drilled a hole through the new parts, I'd be stuck with them.

Check their site for the phone number. You'll need to connect to the parts
department.

You might get better support from www.sweetwater.com. They do repairs, but
they may be able to just sell you the part.

Good luck.

Dear friends and colleagues,

I try not to clutter this list up with too many announcements like this,
so this is just a quick note.

The Rhodes electric piano is probably the single most recognized
sound in modern pop and jazz and according to George Duke,
quite possibly the most important new instrument of the 20th century.
To our surprise, no other Kurzweil developers had attempted a
collection devoted to these instruments. Hence REAL RHODES.

For those of you who didn't see it a while back, we lowered the price
on our Real Rhodes volume. This was in response to list members'
discussions of CD ROM prices, so this is your chance to cast your
vote for special pricing!

The history of Rhodes Electric pianos is rather interesting. If you haven't
seen it already, a special article on Harold Rhodes appeared in the May
2001 issue of KEYBOARD magazine You'll find more history and info
here http://www.fenderrhodes.org/rhodes/supersite

The electric pianos we identify with the name Fender Rhodes evolved
from earlier acoustic piano prototypes that were built with scrap airplane
parts. Harold Rhodes went into production with the amplified electric pianos
around 1965. Fender Rhodes pianos took off and were made popular
by the Beatles, the Doors, Sergio Mendez, Steely Dan, Styx, Brian Auger,
Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea, Les McCann, Jan Hammer, Joe Zawinul,
Herbie Hancock, Don Ellis, George Duke, Mike Mandel (a member of
KurzList btw) , Chuck Mangione's keyboard players, Deodato, Harold
Budd, and many other artists who owe their trademark sound to these
electric pianos. Entire musical legacies evolved around these instruments.
More recently, Fender Rhodes have been used by bands like Portishead
and triphop and jungle artists.

Harold Rhodes died last year, but the sound and the spirit of his pianos
lives on. Our samples were designed to bring this timeless sound into
the digital realm. All samples are velocity switched (up to three velocity
layers) to capture the timbral changes of the original. We sampled several
different model Rhodes to provide a variety of flavors. Like real pianos,
each of these EPs have their own unique quality.

All of the Rhodes patches in our collection are fully programmed
specifically for the Kurzweil K2 series to give you real time control
of panning, tremelo and phase shifter effects. The samples themselves
are totally dry, so if you'd like to add your own effects, by all means.
Ans if you've owned a Fender Rhodes, you'll appreciate the fact that
these EPs are not only portable, but completely maintenance free
--no need to worry about keeping them in tune and calibrated!

This collection also includes classic DX7 Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and
Hohner clavs.

Real Rhodes is compatible with any model of K2000, K2vx, K2vp,
K2500 and K2600. No PRAM required, but you need at least 16
megs of sample RAM.

btw, we received an email from Chuck Monte, the inventor of the
Dyno Rhodes, which is a modified Feder Rhodes: "I listened to your
demo of the Dyno Rhodes and was wondering if this recording is
from the real thing or a Kurzweil emulating the sound? I suppose
it's the real instrument due to the obviousness of the polyphony."
Actualy, those demos were all done with a Kurzweil. If you
haven't had a chance yet, you can give the demos a listen at
http://www.pyramid-sound.com/mp3_demos.htm

If you're a blues or jazz player, don't be left Rhodesless!! :-)

It depends on your needs. If you are serious about your equipement,
consider RME interfaces and converters. If you do some field
recording, MetricHalo is releasing a good FireWire audio interface.

Logic and Digital Performer are both great softwares. Logic exists
also in less expensive versions (notably Logic Audio Silver, great if
you don't need a sophisticate MIDI routing).

>G4 Power Mac (what speed?, how much ram? )

Even the smallest G4 is perfectly suitable for audio recording. 256MB
of RAM seems mandatory to me.

>- digi 001

This is not among my favorites. If you are on a budget, OK, you may
upgrade later with better converters. But please don't forget the is
no workclock i/o, and this could limit your future upgrade.

On the same league there is the new MOTU 828.

>Master List

I'd go with WaveBurner by Emagic. Less expensive, better performer.

>monitors?

Go Genelec if you can (and if you like them). Mackie, KRK, Tannoy,
make monitors that are really liked around. Event, Alesis and Yamaha
make cheaper ones, that may be worth listening to (but not as
accurate).

>CD recorder

Plextor, Yamaha, LaCie.

Hi Erick

If you can send midi messages from your Roland VSR-880 to the Kurz
there must be a way to control this
( Midi102 play/stop Midi 103 Rec/Stop )
The internal sequenzer from K25, have a option on misc page Clock: Int/Ext
to understand extern bpm messages and be sure the sync option is on.
Hope i haven`t misunderstood you.

On the old list there was a thread about choice of monitor speakers used,
specifically, which had the better reputation for durability and less likely
than others to blow. I can't find the archives. What are you guys using
when playing your Ks at home or in a studio?

I've narrowed my list to Mackies, JBL LSR28, and KRK V8. Their main use will
be for playing my K2500 via a mixer, and some CD listening from a computer,
and not so much used for mixing. The room is relatively small,
8ft. X 11ft. , 8ft. ceiling, hardwood floor with area rugs and some
furniture. Volume will be quite modest, at times louder.

As I'm not fanatical about mixing fidelity (for all these speakers, the
differences are esoteric and subjective) my main concern is that they be
built tough. Apreciate any suggestions.

This is correct behaviour with the K2000 series.
Sequencing stops - Vast stops.
To put it in short..........the K2000 series cannot resample itself.
Even though you will get a slug of a low volume drone if you do.

The manual sort of indicates it can resample itself.....but you are
wasting your time..

Andy,
K2600, excellent choice.
You'll find very strong and subjective opinions about the other items.

Have a serious look at MOTU's gear and software(www.motu.com). Digital
Performer has been an award winner, and just went through a major upgrade,
their 828 is a firewire audio interface that even works with an ibook
computer. Their stuff works.

As for monitors, check out KRK V8's, and Mackie HR824's.

For CD recorder, you might need nothing more than a decent consumer CD-R,
many of us use them. Your audio software will take care of the rest.

For hard disk recording, pay serious attention to the hard drives you get in
your computer. IBM 60GXP's are excellent ATA 100 drives. Go SCSI if you're
really going to be taxing your system with lots of tracks at once. Use
separate drives for audio and other stuff.

Regards,
Trond.

Dear Kurzlisters,

Let me first state that I'm not part of Pyramid Sound. I purchased the Real
Rhodes two weeks, and to put it simply I was quite blown away by the quality
and authenticity of the electric pianos in this collection.

This is really a bargain, and for those (like me) who really dig blues, jazz
and classic rock, this is a sample CD that you really must have!

And the reviews are not bluffing when they say that people will be fooled
into thinking that you used a Real Rhodes piano in your music!!!

Regards
Kartik,

Ok, whilst we're at it, I bought Real Rhodes about two months ago after a
previously fruitless search for top quality Rhodes sounds in anything other
than Gigasampler format. This is by far the best Rhodes sample collection I
have ever heard, including my huge Gigasampler Rhodes collection, and is an
absolute must if you're a K2 user in pretty much anything from Jazz to Pop
to Funk to Dance.

The sampled instruments are clearly supreme examples of the Rhodes genre and
the sampling and programming involved is top-notch. I've since bought the
Emagic EVP88 Rhodes modelling VST instrument, and whilst it's implementation
of dynamics is excellent, it fails to capture certain nuances of the real
thing, causing me to invariably come back to my Pyramid RR CD.

Just my view, and no I have no affiliation of any kind with Pyramid Sounds
(shame we have to say that), and if there's a deal on the CD now, then I
paid full price without any deal and still considered it a bargain.

Iain,

That's exactly what I ended up doing yesterday. I call Kurz parts and raised
hell... telling them that I wanted the parts for an out of warrantee synth and
that I was not reselling them and they finally told me they would sell them to
me.

The person who finally helped me is Pam Woods. If any one needs parts... call
her first! And be sure to start by telling her that the parts are for an
out-of-warranty synth. She'll want the serial #...?

But, at first, they told me they would not, under any circumstances, sell me
parts! It seems pretty weird to me...!

But thanks for your help!!

I also have no affiliation with Pyramid, but I can tell you from direct
experience that Peter runs a first-class operation and his products are
excellent. I have several of the sample CD, including the Real Rhodes, and they
are all very well done.

In addition, I bought an external hard drive from Peter, but it had a small
problem. This is where you really find out about the kind of company you are
dealing with. It was a great drive, and Peter even checked it out and formatted
it for the Kurz partitions, a service that you don't see often. But in the
process of shipping, a little piece of metal broke loose somehow and began to
rattle inside the drive. It worked fine, but since I was going to use the drive
at gigs I was concerned about a future failure. Peter worked with me over
E-mail and the phone to try to fix it, but we coud not solve it (for reasons I
won't go into here). He replaced the entire drive without hesitation.

Pyramid is a small company, but just like Bolder Sounds, it is a first class
operation that has great products and better customer service than the Ritz
Carlton. Like a lot of folks on the list, I'm a very happy customer and
recommend both Pyramid and Bolder without hesitation to all other Kurz players.

For those who do not have the web address for Pyramid, it is
http://www.pyramid-sound.com. Check it out.

Try www.sweetwater.com Call them and ask for Morrison Agen. He was very
helpful the last time I needed replacement parts.
