Key Bank Expands Employment Policy To Include Gender Identity

The National Transgender Advocacy Coalition (NTAC) is pleased to announce the expansion of employment policy at Key Equipment Finance, and indeed their expansion on their upcoming global employment policy.

“As a contract employment over the past year and a half with the Key Equipment Finance (KEF) division, I noted their commitment to diversity in the workplace,” said Vanessa Edwards Foster, Media Director for NTAC.  “Obvsiouly one of the first things I checked was their online hiring policy, which was sexual orientation only,” Fosted observed.

A spokesperson for the Human Resources department confirmed that the policy statement will be changed company-wide on it’s next employment statement revision.  Key Bank spans the length of the northern half of the nation, but its finance and leasing divisions have locations around the globe.

“Key had no misgivings about placing me in their Quality Relationships Team with the bulk of their most critical accounts,” Foster said.  “These were the most sensitive client situations in this particular portfolio, and all of them were resolved successfully – something that Key duly took note of.”

Of her time at KEF, Foster commented that, “it was win-win.  A number of their large and difficult accounts I helped save for them.  And they provided me an opportunity to succeed and prove first-hand the worth of transgender employees in the workplace.  When you prove it by example, it’s hard to ignore.

“If they ever reestablish a presence in Texas, I would certainly consider working for them again.”

Foster added, “it’s also a victory for the little guys.  You don’t have to be a big money organization like a Human Rights Campaign to attain equality.  Even being a cash-starved and neglected group with no help at all, this proves you can still make a difference!”

NTAC Remembers a True Hero to the Transgender Community: Rep. Tom Lantos

The National Transgender Advocacy Coalition (NTAC) is saddened to report the passing of Rep. Tom Lantos on Monday (D-CA) from complications due to esophageal cancer.  The longtime congressman from suburban San Francisco had recently announced he’d not seek re-election due to his illness.  Rep. Lantos was 80.

While low-key, Rep. Lantos was a quiet but distinctive hero for the oppressed and voiceless of the world.  It was befitting of a man who survived the holocaust after losing his family, and later emigrated to the United States from Hungary, virtually penniless.

Particular to the transgender community, Rep. Lantos authored and sponsored the very first legislative language introduced into Congress that mentioned “gender identity.”  After an initial entry into the congressional session in 1998, Rep. Lantos introduced HR 259 in early 2000.

The resolution condemned human rights abuses internationally “on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.”  In the session prior to the legislation, Lantos was also the first to note the same issues with the same language – including gender identity – into the congressional record.

NTAC co-founders and board members Sarah Fox and Vanessa Edwards Foster lobbied both Lantos’ office and other congressional offices seeking support for the legislation immediately following the 1999 GenderPac Lobby Days.  NTAC is proud to have been part of that groundbreaking legislative effort.

“Though he’s not widely known for it, Rep. Lantos cemented a place in America’s transgender history by submitting that bill,” noted Foster, who served as chair of NTAC from 2002-2006.  “I’m glad I missed my flight that morning and took the extra day to hit the Hill with Sarah and lobby for this.  The following year I got to go back and lobby for it as a bill.”

It’s worth noting that even though domestic legislation in Congress was being submitted without gender identity at that time, Lantos’ International LGBT Human Rights bill was intently inclusive.

Foster commented that, “he exhibited quite a bit of courage” in authoring and presenting that bill in 2000.  While it never made it out of subcommittee, Lantos’ bill still managed to pick up 56 co-sponsors.

“When I noted Rep. Lantos wasn’t on as a co-sponsor to the transgender-inclusive ENDA [HR 2015] in May of last year, I’d inquired of [legislative aide] Michael Beard about it.  With no hesitation, that was rectified shortly thereafter as [Lantos] signed on as co-sponsor.  Rep. Lantos was unfailingly principled and truly cared for the disenfranchised.  Especially in the transgender community, Tom Lantos will be sorely missed.”

NTAC, Transgenders and Allies To Picket Over ENDA Betrayal

The National Transgender Advocacy Coalition is issuing a call to join our
members, members of other organizations and numerous individuals in
protesting the lavish October 6th annual HRC National Dinner in
Washington, DC.  Representative Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, will
be featured as keynote speaker at the event.

Last week, after a hastily called "whip count" (where the majority party
whip polls members of committees or Congress to gauge whether
legislation has sufficient votes), Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) stripped
Gender Identity from the original bill.  This action was allegedly based on
the results of as yet unsubstantiated claims of not having enough support
for trans-inclusion.

Recently, Shannon Minter of the National Center for Lesbian Rights
(NCLR) authored and circulated a letter signed by more than 150 different
state and national organizations and submitted to House Speaker Nancy
Pelosi petitioning for a return to one inclusive bill for the Employment Non
Discrimination Act (ENDA), HR 2015 in its inclusive form.

From this effort has come a new ad-hoc campaign: United ENDA, the new
collective of over 150 organizations (www.unitedenda.org) that have
agreed to the principles of explicitly inclusive legislation submitted to
Congress.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), which claims to be the largest U.S.
LGBT civil rights organization, has not signed onto an endorsement of
the statement signed by the members of United ENDA, opposing the split
of the proposed bill into separate legislation – one for sexual orientation
and one for gender identity.

"We are very disappointed and angry that any civil rights organization
claiming to advocate for our rights can turn their backs on us when the
going gets tough," said Ethan St.Pierre, Board Chair of NTAC.  "It
amounts to a betrayal, since HRC earlier promised to support only an
inclusive ENDA."

At the Southern Comfort Conference (SCC) in mid-September, HRC Exec.
Director, Joe Solmonese made a promise as keynote speaker that HRC
would not only support an inclusive ENDA bill, but would also oppose
any attempt at submitting a non-inclusive bill.  While at SCC, HRC culled
many new memberships and donations from the transgender community.
"After removing gender identity from a bill that would have protected
millions of transgender Americans from discrimination in employment, the
message being sent to the entire Congress and to corporate America is
that it is acceptable to discriminate against transgender, intersexed, and
other gender variant Americans," NTAC Chair, St. Pierre added.

As a result of HRC's rescission of their promise three weeks earlier, the
only transgender ever seated on their Board of Directors, Donna Rose,
resigned October 2, 2007 in disappointment.  Additional resignations from
the transgender community are continuing to come in, including Robbi
Cohn resigning from HRC's steering committee for the Carolinas.

In Rose's resignation, she stated, "The relationship between HRC and the
transgender community is one scarred by betrayal, distrust, and anger. I
have become a focal point for much of that frustration," she noted, adding
she "accepted that responsibility with the hope that I could help to
change [HRC]."

"I call on other like-minded board members, steering committee leaders,
donors, corporate sponsors, and volunteers to think long and hard about
whether this organization still stands for your values and to take decisive
action."

All those who stand in solidarity with the transgender community,
including HRC Board members wishing to make a statement, are
welcome to join us on Saturday, October 6th at 4:30 p.m. before the Major
Donors Reception.  The picketing will continue throughout the General
Reception and Banquet.

"We want to ensure people note that this is a non-violent protest, and that we should avoid working to our detriment by being profane or verbally

attacking," said NTAC Media Director, Vanessa Edwards Foster.  "Icy
glares and stone cold silence work well.

"Bring out your unequal signs and let HRC and Barney Frank know that
we're quite aware of what they think of us."

The event will take place at the Washington Convention Center, 801
Mount Vernon Place, NW (near 9th St & Mass Ave) Washington DC.  For
those coming in from outside of the city, this is on the Green Line at the
Mount Vernon Square / UCC stop.

ACTION ITEM:  PROTEST HRC’S NATIONAL BANQUET IN WASHINGTON DC

Who:  Transgender activists from across the nation, including major groups such as NTAC (National Transgender Advocacy Coalition).

What:  Protest of divisive individuals and organizations attempting to create schism within GLBT community.  Feted at HRC's event are keynote House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, actress Rebecca Romijn, and Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA)

When:  Saturday, October 6, 2007, beginning at 4:30 PM (Major donors reception), continuing through 6:00 PM beginning of banquet – Rain or shine.

Where:  Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Place, NW (near 9th St & Mass Ave) Washington DC  (Metro stop: Mount Vernon Square, Green Line, walk south)

Why:  Following on the heels of HRC Exec. Dir. Joe Solmonese’s keynote speech at Southern Comfort Conference - SCC [largest transgender conference in America] that HRC “would oppose a non-inclusive ENDA”, a week later Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) introduced two ENDA bills, each with separate language for sexual orientation and gender identity.  HRC delayed signing onto a bill pressing for return to inclusive language, and currently will not oppose a non-inclusive ENDA, contradicting speech at SCC two weeks earlier.

Are You Serious About Transgender Inclusion in ENDA?

On Wednesday, September 26, the Washington Blade reported that gender identity and expression language in the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) was being considered for removal from the bill.

ENDA is presently being debated by the House Committee on Education and Labor’s Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions.  If you are a transgender person, or care about transgender people, and want the benefits of inclusion in ENDA, the time is now to contact your Congressman. The importance of this is even more extreme if your Congressman is a member of the House Committee on Education and Labor, and is more vital yet if they are a member of the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions.

Below, there is a list of Committee Members. Subcommittee Members are marked in red.  It is also imperative that the Committee Staff that’s handling ENDA be contacted, as well as the House Speaker, House Majority Leader, co-authors of ENDA (Barney Frank and Tammy Baldwin), and House Majority Whip. Those numbers are also included in this release.

Your message to these Members of Congress should be short and to the point.  Prepare your script yourself in advance, using your own words. Emphasize that transgender people are the most discriminated against minority in the workplace today, with estimates of over 70% of transgender people having actually experienced workplace discrimination. Also mention that, without gender identity and expression language, gay and lesbian people will continue to face legal discrimination in the workplace because of their lack of congruence with societal norms of gender presentation and behavior. Telling your own story of discrimination, with brevity, is powerful.  Finally, ask that the Representative insist on inclusion of gender identity and expression and that he or she vote to pass the bill.

Call, write, fax - don't wait, contact them now!
Ask to talk with the staff member who is working with the Employment Non-Discrimination or other civil rights legislation.

Transgender Week on Capitol Hill Complete: NTAC to Lobby May 16-17

Transgender activists will again converge on Capitol Hill in May for another attempt at passing federal transgender-inclusive legislation. The National Transgender Advocacy Coalition (NTAC) has announced its
Washington DC dates for direct advocacy with Congress on what’s turning out to be Transgender Lobby Week.

The transgender community is hopeful this year for legislation with explicit protections for the trans community.  With conservatives out of power in both houses of Congress, this appears to be the best chance at any type of equal rights enactment for anyone in the GLBT Community.

Building upon the inclusive Hate Crimes legislation that passed the House of Representatives in the last Congress, there may well be the first inclusive legislation on employment non-discrimination as well this
session.

This year’s visit by NTAC will be May 16 - 17, with a plenary training session on Tuesday, May 15, 2007.  However, NTAC will not be the only group lobbying that week.

“Mara Keisling’s group will be conducting a transgender lobby day on the Hill on  Monday and Tuesday,” said recently-elected NTAC Chair Ethan St. Pierre.  Meanwhile, “the non-trans members of the community will be lobbying with Riki Wilchins’ group at the end of the same week,” St. Pierre added.  “Along with NTAC in the middle of the week,” St. Pierre noted, “the transgender and other-gendered community will be lobbying
Congress … the entire week.”

“Members of the National Transgender Advocacy Coalition are looking forward to lobbying for trans-inclusive legislation in the areas of Hate Crimes and Employment non-discrimination,” added NTAC Board Member Marisa Richmond.

Richmond, who chairs NTAC’s Lobbying Committee admitted that both the Hate Crimes and Employment Non-Discrimination legislation “have been major concerns of transgender persons, and NTAC, for a number of years,” adding that “we are optimistic that we will see passage of both [pieces of legislation] in 2007.”

NTAC participants from New England to California will make the trip to the nation’s capital, likely including victims of anti-transgender hate crimes and those with personal experience of employment and other types of transgender discrimination.  Since the late ‘90s, NTAC members have been making grassroots forays to the nation’s capital to gain these long sought-after protections.

Now it appears the many years of efforts may be providing a glimmer of opportunity.

NTAC will assist attendees by arranging meetings with their senators, representatives and staff members.  Those making the trip will need to make arrangements for travel and lodging, however NTAC will have a hotel in mind and attempt to block out a number of rooms for participants on a first-come, first-served basis.

NTAC has actively advocated at the grassroots level for the rights of transgender Americans at federal, state, and local levels.  As always, participants will have the opportunity to meet with many like-minded trans and trans-supportive activists from organizations across the country, working toward fully inclusive federal civil rights laws.

Registration and hotel information for the effort will be linked to the NTAC website (http://www.ntac.org) when details become available.  In the meantime, those with questions about joining this grassroots lobbying effort can write to richmondmj@..., or call 615-293-6199 after 6PM CDT.

HRC Corp. Equality Index Not Viewed as Equal

On September 19, 2006, the Human Right's Campaign (HRC) published their yearly Corporate Equality Index (CEI) Survey.  The index indicated that 138 of the largest companies have scored 100 percent perfect scores and that 68 percent implemented at least one wellness benefit for transgender employees.

This news was met with a resounding applause from many in LGBT circles. As the people around the community patted each other on the back for another job well done while celebrating advances in corporate diversity, other voices rose to counter the celebration.

For the transgender community, the survey’s results were cause for concern rather than for celebration.  The concern was that the structuring of the questions led to answers that covered basic care, but avoided addressing whether physician-mandated transgender-specific health care issues were covered.  As a result, any answer on basic questions received a full 5 point grade.  Meanwhile these same employers could still have health policies in place to deny, say, hysterectomies if it was deemed transgender-related.

The CEI Survey contains a statement by HRC that set the criteria used to score the survey as follows:

“Some transgender people are denied health insurance coverage for certain treatments and procedures because of "transgender exclusion" clauses in health insurance plans and, furthermore, limitations on what procedures are deemed "medically necessary." HRC recommends that, whenever possible, employers make available company provided health care coverage for medically necessary treatments and procedures, as defined by the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association's (HBIGDA) Standards of Care for Gender Identity Disorders. These procedures can include mastectomy, hysterectomy, phalloplasty, vaginoplasty and other related procedures.

Based upon HRC's recommendations to companies, we anticipated that, in order to receive a perfect score, they would require employer's health plans provide coverage for medically necessary treatments and procedures as defined by the HBIGDA Standards of Care.

For example, one of the questions on the survey asks if the company excludes transgender employees from medically necessary surgical procedures such as a hysterectomy. If your answer is no, your company gets 5 points.

As an example, if a Female-To-Male transsexual employee is diagnosed with cervical cancer and the employer's health care plan offers coverage for a hysterectomy for other similarly situated employees, this employer may be among the 68 percent who implemented “at least one wellness benefit for transgender employees.”  Does this reflect that the employer has health benefits that provide transgender employees coverage for  "medically necessary" procedures related to gender identity under the HBIGDA Standards of Care?  No. What it means is that transgender employees would not be denied treatment that would be available for all other employees.

The controversy is that survey will lead the reader to believe that all health care for transgender employees is covered, especially based upon the reference in the survey question to the HBIGDA Standards.  In reality, that may or very well may not be the case.  Based on the survey, one can’t discern the employers who might cover transgender-related health care from the ones who will simply offer basic treatment.

“The CEI survey results pertaining to transgender health care are deceptive and reward and encourage employers to meet a meaningless standard,” said NTAC Board member Ethan St. Pierre.  He pointed out that “instead of congratulating 68 percent of employers for offering a health care benefit to transgender employees, the GLBT community should be outraged that 32 percent of employers deny” even the most basic medical care to transgender employees which they offer to other employees.

“HRC has an opportunity to set a meaningful standard for employers which could actually lead to coverage for medically necessary procedures for transgender employees,”

NTAC calls upon HRC to revise the CEI survey questions to recognize those employers who offer health care plans to their employees that do not contain exclusions for medically necessary treatments and procedures mandated by the HBIGDA Standards of Care.  “Wouldn't it make sense for HRC to measure how many employers have health plans which provide coverage for treatments regarded as medically necessary according to the HBIGDA Standards of Care?” St. Pierre commented.

For now the question remains: what portion of the 68 percent of employer's health plans provide coverage for medically necessary procedures which are directly related to an employee's transgender condition?  Then we can all congratulate those who have truly implemented meaningful health policies and encourage others to do likewise.

Transgenders Claim FEMA Sex Change Scandal Was Fabricated, Fraudulent

Last month, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) testified before a House Homeland Security subcommittee to spotlight $1.4 billion fraudulent waste of Emergency Assistance Funds (EAF) to Hurricane Katrina victims. The unprecedented level of Federal Emergency Management Agency fraud was blared over television newscasts and emblazoned on newspaper headlines: "FEMA funds paid for a sex change."

However, the National Transgender Advocacy Coalition (NTAC) is now publicly calling the media and authorities on this claim, demanding proof that this occurred and calling the press on this claim "fabricated" and "fraudulent." In reviewing both House subcommittee testimony and the GAO report (www.gao.gov/new.items/d06844t.pdf) that uncovered the fraud there was no reference of a sex change, nor any surgery of any type being paid for by FEMA funds.

"It appears [the sex change] story was prime red meat for conservatives looking to turn attention away from the President, and onto Katrina victims and FEMA," said NTAC President Vanessa Edwards Foster. "It also appears there's no veracity to the story that EAF funds were used for gender reassignment surgery. These press claims are what's fraudulent."

House Homeland Security Investigations subcommittee chair Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) called the discovered waste "criminal" but never mentioned anything about sex changes. However Rep. Charles Dent (R-PA) did note the sex change claim shortly after the House testimony, commenting, "I don't understand how this could happen."

How the sex change allegation originated remains unclear. The June 14, 2006 story by Larry Margasak of the Associated Press noted a sex change in a laundry list of items scammed from FEMA. While outlets as diverse as Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, ABC News, MSNBC, Bloomberg Report carried the story, the more conservative news outlets such as Wall Street Journal or Fox News made no mention of the sex change accusation.

When questioned about the story, the GAO's Office of Public Affairs stated "there was no reference to that allegation … because we cannot confirm it."

"The press reported on fabricated claims of sex changes paid with FEMA funds, but no media ever mentioned $2,000 paid to a Christian Broadcast Network from EAF payments," Foster of NTAC commented. The GAO report listed $2,000 paid to Colorado-based LeSEA Broadcasting Network.

After anguishing over the initial FEMA news reports, NTAC Vice President Courtney Sharp said she "was shocked to discover that the [GAO] report didn't mention anything about anyone misusing funds to have gender reassignment surgery."

A New Orleans resident who lost nearly everything during Katrina, Sharp said she listened as co-workers and friends disparaged the person who used FEMA funds to obtain a sex change. "[It] was extremely hurtful to realize that someone had embellished the GAO report and was probably using the negative stereotypes about transgender people [for] media attention."

Sharp said she now feels the public was "bamboozled" by the news report.

"There's an inherent media bias in this story," NTAC's Foster continued. "If you have transsexuals having sex changes it's great press - even if it is uncorroborated! But a confirmed report of emergency victims' funds paid to a faith-based broadcaster is deemed not press-worthy." While acknowledging many Americans have no problem with faith-based groups receiving money, she noted that they would likely not be keen on funds intended for needy victims in an emergency being given instead to a broadcast group to spread the gospel.

"I smell a rat behind the fabrication of this news report. It's very Karl Rove," Foster commented.  "It uses an unwitting transgender community to bludgeon Hurricane Katrina victims." She called the uncorroborated claim in the press "despicable."

"Ten months after Hurricane Katrina, residents of the Gulf Coast continue to struggle to rebuild their lives," NTAC's Sharp observed. "The impact has been truly unimaginable. Like the majority of residents, transgender people are responsible, productive, law abiding members of the community and they are also playing important roles in rebuilding the devastated areas.

"The media attack on the transgender community," Sharp finished, "served as my fifth personal "tidal surge" post-Katrina."

Whether originating from Congress, the press or an administration press operative, NTAC urges the responsible party to own up to, and publicly apologize for unfairly portraying the transgender community, and for deceiving the American public.

NTAC Calls for Senate to Rewrite Hate Crimes Bill, Calls Current Proposal Inadequate

As Gay and Lesbian Rights organizations renew the call urging the Senate to reactivate their Hate Crimes bill, one Transgender Rights group is asking that the Senate stop and rewrite the legislation.  The National Transgender Advocacy Coalition (NTAC) called the Senate bill "inferior and inadequate," and is urging the Senate to "take a courageous stand" instead of taking "the coward's way out."

Immediately after the hatchet and gunshot attacks in a Boston-area gay bar in late January, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) issued press release urging the Senate to enact the LLEEA: the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act (S.1145).

While some gay and lesbian advocacy groups seized upon the opportunity to urge passage of the Senate bill with the existing language, many in the transgender community are calling for a rewrite of the bill.  "The Senate bill's language is inferior and inadequate to cover hate crimes in all fifty states," stated Vanessa Edwards Foster, chair of NTAC.  "If this bill passes," she added, "we'll have to explicitly rework it down the road."

"Had [the Massachusetts] crime happened at a transgender bar, it would not be considered a hate crime under this law" said NTAC Secretary, Ethan St Pierre.  He also noted that Massachusetts similarly has no coverage against anti-transgender bias crimes.

The language of the Senate bill differs significantly from the House version (H.R. 2662) that passed by a bipartisan vote of 223 to 199 on September 14th, 2005.  The House bill added "gender identity and expression" in their bill's language (HR 2662), as well as provisions for the FBI to expand the Hate Crimes Statistics Act (HCSA) in order to track bias-related violence.  Currently, bias-related violence against transgenders is either tracked as anti-gay crime, anti-women crime, or sometimes not tracked under any category.

While the Senate has passed the LLEEA previously, the language has never had distinct coverage for gender identity or gender expression.

"We've heard about the Senate intent to cover transgenders in Hate Crimes legislation, but they've always attempted this by cleverly trying to hide the language, " NTAC's Foster said.  "If they support [transgender inclusion], why can't the Senate take a courageous stand and explicitly state what they intend – what they believe in?  Trying to slide legislation through surreptitiously is a coward's way out.  Stand up for what you believe in!  Otherwise, let the opposition walk all over you. "

The NTAC Chair called for conservatives opposed to the bill to go on record as well.  "If any Senator truly believes that Americans should have the right to attack and kill because they hate any other group of people, then be proud and state it openly.  We at NTAC will work to provide ample press to communicate your principled stand to the nation."

Recently, in the wake of the Massachusetts attacks, HRC initiated a "Dear Senator" letter calling for passage of the current LLEEA. The bill was signed by People for the American Way, Dignity USA, PFLAG, GLSEN and twenty-four other organizations asked for passage of the non-inclusive Senate version.

Thirty-two states already include sexual orientation in their hate crimes laws. Sixty-eight percent of Americans polled believe that laws are needed to protect against anti-transgender hate crimes, yet only eight states currently have language that includes gender identity or expression.

"[The National Organization of Women] was an early supporter of transgender inclusion in the Hate Crimes bill," said NOW Action Vice President Olga Vives. "Since transgender people are a major target of hate-motivated violence it was imperative that gender identity be included in this important policy initiative.

"With the passage of [explicitly inclusive Hate Crimes] legislation, we can take down these and other barriers of discrimination and achieve our goal of full inclusion -- for all people -- in our society."

NTAC is proud to stand with NOW and directly challenge the Senate to write and pass a Hate Crimes bill that explicitly protects transgenders and all other Americans.

"President Bush once stated you're with us, or you're with the terrorists," Foster continued.  "Similarly, those in Congress are either with Americans opposed to Hate Violence on anyone -- or you're with those who instill terror and commit acts of violence and murder toward the segments of society they hate.  We'll note your stand on this issue with your votes."

- 30 -

Founded in 1999, NTAC - the National Transgender Advocacy Coalition - is a civil rights organization working to establish and maintain the right of all transgendered, intersexed, and gender-variant people to live and work without fear of violence or discrimination.

what? film screening: the abortion diaries & teen mami
where? monkeywrench books110 E. North Loop, Austin, Texas 78751
when? january 22nd, 7:30pm - 9pm

The Abortion Diaries is a documentary featuring 12 women who speak
candidly about their experiences with abortion. The women are doctors,
subway workers, artists, activists, military personnel, teachers and
students; they are Black, Latina , Jewish and White; they are mothers
or child-free; they range in age from 19 to 54. Their stories weave
together with the filmmaker's diary entries to present a compelling,
moving and at times surprisingly funny "dinner party" where the
audience is invited to hear what women say behind closed doors about
motherhood, medical technology, sex, spirituality, love, work and
their own bodies.

Teen Mami is a documentary short about one girl's experience having
two children by age 16. This movie was not made to condemn teen
mothers, but to examine the origins of teen motherhood and debunk some
cultural stereotypes about young Latina mothers.

we might have a discussion period after the films. details to come.
hope to see you there!

Doing it in Strange Places... And Making Change:
Young Women Fighting for Social Justice

A commonly asked question at social justice events is, "What can I do to get more involved?" This question is usually answered, according to third wave feminist writers Jennifer Baumgardner and Amy Richards, in one of three ways: send money, call politicians, and volunteer. Unfortunately, none of these foster a sense of investment in an issue or offer solutions for how to solve the injustices in the world. It also doesn't account for the lack of time, money and resources that these three answers require. What if we could just incorporate our politics into our every day lives? In fact, that is just what most activists do.
In this anthology, we want to hear from young women from all walks of life who have found creative ways to use their passion (from writing to banking to being a homemaker) as an outlet for social justice activism. We seek to make activism accessible and inspire others to use the resources that they have to contribute to
social justice. Changing the world won't happen over night, so let's share our daily successes and strategies for making all of our visions of a better world possible. Tell us what worked and what didn't because all experiences are valuable. We want to be sure multiple voices and perspectives are represented in the anthology. Writers of all experience levels are encouraged to submit work. All work must be original and should not be published elsewhere.

Editor:
Mandy Van Deven is the editor and publisher of Altar Magazine
(www.AltarMagazine.com), a social justice publication focusing on art, music, culture, politics, and activism. She also works as the Director of Community Organizing at Girls for Gender Equity (www.gges.info), a grassroots organization in Brooklyn, NY working to create opportunities for girls and women to live self-determined lives. Mandy believes that all opinions are valuable and because her voice is loud, she works to help others raise their own voices.

THE ABORTION DIARIES: Touring in 2006 To Celebrate Roe v. Wade

Contact: Penny Lane, penny@...
www.theabortiondiaries.com

The Abortion Diaries is a new documentary that gives voice to an
important but silenced community: women who have had abortions. Over a
million American women will have an abortion each year. The Abortion
Diaries, directed by 27-year-old Penny Lane, dispels the stigma of
abortion by presenting the abortion stories of twelve diverse women.
Their stories weave together with Lane's own diary entries to present a
compelling, intimate and at times surprisingly funny "dinner party"
where the audience is invited to hear what women say behind closed doors
about sex, love, careers, motherhood, medical technology, spirituality
and their own bodies.

In honor of the 33rd anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision
(January 22), any organization who would like to screen The Abortion
Diaries between January 21 and January 31, 2006 will be able to do so
without paying for rental/screening fees.

Imagine hundreds of communities all across the US ... and thousands of
people discussing what reproductive freedom really means in their lives.
The Abortion Diaries is an important, engaging and timely contribution
to this discussion -- now more than ever.

The only rules are as follows:

1. A DVD copy of the film must be purchased ($50.00 for an organization).
2. Ms. Lane must be notified about the screening in advance.
3. The screening fee waiver only applies to events occuring between
January 21 - January 31, 2006.
4. The organization must be willing to sell copies of the DVDs and
return proceeds within 30 days of the event.

Contact me if you are interested in hosting a screening in your
community. I am often available to appear at screenings as well, and I
always enjoy doing it.

The Abortion Diaries clocks in at 30 minutes, making it the perfect
length for the lively discussion that is sure to ensue after each
screening. The Abortion Diaries has already attracted attention from
Salon and Alternet, and public screenings are planned in San Antonio,
Knoxville, Austin, NYC, Seattle, Durham, Columbus, San Francisco,
Albany, Poughkeepsie, Binghamton, and many other places big and small.
The film earned rave reviews at its film festival premiere at AFI FEST
in Los Angeles this November and has been picked up by Free Speech TV
for national broadcast in 2006.

+++Resources for holding a successful screening and discussion can be
found on www.theabortiondiaries.com

+++Advance praise for The Abortion Diaries

"A critical tear in the shroud behind which we hide the lives and
feelings of thousands of women who choose abortion each year to end an
unintended and unwanted pregnancy."
- Blue Carreker, Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood

"These are the voices that have been missing in the national
conversation about abortion."
-Claire Keyes, Allegheny Reproductive Health Center

"Penny Lane's work acknowledges that abortion happens and helps to
destigmatize the choice."

- Katy Stevenson, Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood

+++Statement of Director Penny Lane

I began this film as a way to deal with my own abortion. When I put
out a call for interviews, my inbox was flooded with responses. It
seemed that women everywhere wanted to tell their stories, but were
afraid that nobody wanted to hear them. This response only
strengthened my resolve to make this film.

I traveled around the East Coast of the U.S. with a small crew in a
beat-up station wagon borrowed from my D.P.s parents. Each story I
heard inspired me and enlightened me in new ways. I wanted to keep my
own voyage of discovery as a central part of the film, so I decided to
include passages from my own abortion diary as a guiding structure
throughout the interviews.

My hope is that people who watch the film will see their mothers, their
sisters, girlfriends and selves in the faces of these women. I hope
they will realize that abortion is not just a political issue used to
divide us, but something that affects us all and needs to be discussed
much more openly.

Hi there,
I'm going to be in Austin during the Spring semester of 2006, teaching
at the Univ. of Texas, and I thought I'd try to meet cool people
during my short stay, which is why I just joined this group!
I was in Philly during Ladyfest 2003 and made a documentary you
probably haven't heard of, called Ladyfesto... It mentions Ladyfest
Texas at the very end !
I'm also writing because I'm looking for a place to stay, preferably
furnished, and I've seen postings in the archives. I can't / don't
want to afford the prices that the university is offering + I suspect
the rooms are small and unattractive like they usually are on
campuses, so I'm looking for other options. I live in France and have
no contacts in Austin, so I thought this could be an idea !
Hope things are good in Texas -
Anne

The annual(and oft requested)LAUGH OUT PROUD is just
around the corner. Let's all show up to laugh together
(maybe a room full of aughter might heal the world
just a little bit). It will definitely go a long way
to help support the young people that depend on OUT
YOUTH.

Thanks to generous contributions from our community --
that's you! -- OutYouth has been privileged to spend
the past 15 years supporting our Central Texas' gay,
lesbian, queer, transgendered and questioning youth.
It's something we are trying very hard to help make
happen for another 15 years and then some (helping
about 300 young ones a year), so we look to you all
for support, but we want to give you something in
return -- laughter.

COMEDY - SILENT AUCTION - LAUGHS, LAUGHS, LAUGHS!

Laugh Out Proud is OutYouth's major fund-raiser, so
please come laugh with us and help us to uplift the
next generation.

Please take a moment to visit WWW.OUTYOUTH.ORG for
more details and to conveniently and safely buy your
tickets online via PayPal.

(Passing this on for Foodies)

Got nothin' on your calendar next Saturday night?
Scribble in Big Bang Theory, a dance party at Karma
(8th/Colorado), October 1, 10pm - 3am*. Va-room baby.

Join the ladies for a night of bump n grind; 70's
disco; 80's new wave and a dash of electroclash. Yeah,
babies. Go-go dancers don a variety of costumes and
there'll be so much eye candy you'll get a toothache.
C'mere wee one, there's someone out there to help you
with the pain. Ahh, yay-ahhh.

Karma and the Karma staff rock. R-O-C-K! Go to
karmadashaustindotcom and check out Karma's cool
layout. Click on a room, yeah do it. They're way past
cool.

Is that Jackie O. shag dancing in the shag room? Warm
leatherette on the giant bed? Daisy Dukes ala lezzie
style saying some prayers in the candle room? A
mermaid in the human aquarium? Why I think you better
come this Saturday night and find out for yourself.

Bought a pass or ticket to aGLIFF and going to the
Foodies/Wolfe Video sponsored UNVEILED, Saturday,
October 1, 7:15 at Arbor? Perrrfect. Watch the flick
then afterwards hit Big Bang Theory. I'm introducing
and watching UNVEILED then heading down to Karma at
8th/Colorado.

Bring a crisp 10 dollar bill and the fabulous and sexy
Big Bang greeters will gladly take your money as they
flirt their cleavages off and welcome you to a night
of hot hot hot hot hot steamy-ass fun.

*Experience an after-glow at the 2am - 3am after-party
with some Red Bull and Voss H20. Driving home safely
with yo honey. Good times.

email beatsagogo@... to get on the list or if you
have any questions. Also, go to craigslist to find out more.
