Recaps from Fire Eater Wizard...
On The Metallic Onslaught: In one of the most action packed shows ever,
(which is saying a lot, I know) everyone wound up dead by night's end. All
except for Jeffie, that is, as he told us last week, he would be absent that
night so he could attend the concert of his newfound friends (at least in
his mind they are his friends) The Pushrods. So ironically he is probably
the only one left. Senility and dementia finally overcame old Joe, and he
snapped, attacking and beating Lance into oblivion. Then Rick and Joe had a
brawl to the death. The brutality and carnage was truly shocking, even for
MO! Oh, the inhumanity! And, in further shocking developments, Shoebox (yes,
the fact that he was there was shocking enough in and of itself, but it gets
even more so) apparently became a zombie after trying some leftover faerie
dust that Santa brought at Christmas time. He ate the corpses, and then died
of food poisoning. you apparently have to be careful when eating corpses,
make sure they are cooked at a high enough temperature to kill off disease.
Do not eat them raw! Who Knew? A helpful cooking tip for all of you... Yet
another one of the valuable services we provide that you can't do without
and won't get anywhere else. so, I guess the show is Jeffie's now... Well,
ok, actually... Most of the above was, well, a bit exaggerated... Well, ok,
a lot exaggerated... Actually, the only thing in this recap that actually
did happen was that Jeffie was absent attending The Pushrod's concert. So a
bit of levity to spice things up. :) I'm sure I went too far beyond the
bounds of credibility, and, thus, gave it all away when I said that Shoebox
was there. Like that would ever happen?!?! Joe and Lance were going to debut
another song, but said they would wait and do it next week. They also tossed
around ideas for more side band projects they might try, like Muppet metal.
They all remarked on how great it was to be free of Jeffie, and hoped The
Pushrods would have many more concerts. They even said they would open a
club just for The Pushrods, and have them play every Friday night. They
hoped Jeffie would not return this week, but, The Pushrods do not have a
show this week, so, I don't think they will get their wish. So, tune in for
the probable return of Jeffie, the very likely absence of Shoebox, the debut
of more wonderful music from Lance and Joe, and whatever else that may
occur...
On The Last Exit For The Lost: Just Joe was not there as his car would not
start. The Penguin was there for a bit. Ritchie was there for about half of
the show. He performed some songs, and, wonder of wonders, I don't think he
got distracted, or screwed up, or forgot the lyrics even once, which may be
a first. It was quite impressive. I don't know if it was because there was
no Just Joe there? I don't think that could be all that accounted for it, as
Just Joe was absent a couple weeks ago, and Ritchie still seemed to have
just as much trouble getting through his songs. He must just have hit a
really good night for some reason. The last hour of the show (as well as
some of the music throughout the whole night) was all Shoebox's music,
including some old and rare and/or remixed gems. This was really fun, and it
was because Saturday February 19th was Shoebox's birthday, and, thus, marked
3 decades of Shoebox on this planet. Yes, he turned 30! Happy birthday
Shoebox! Anyone who has not already done so, you can/should still send him a
belated birthday message by e-mailing him at: Shoebox@... This
week, some members of Punch Drunk Monkeys hopefully should be on LE, if
things work out and go through ok. If so, that will be cool. And Just Joe
will likely be back. So tune in to find out what's in store...
***************************************************
From Azkath...
Yeah, so Just Joe's car would not start until... Well, find out Saturday
when we ask him. We may also have Black Labeled up, and possibly some of
Punch Drunk Monkeys. And Jeffie will make his long awaited return to The
Metallic Onslaught to reveal all the things he has learned in his long (1
week) absence...

QUEENSRYCHE TO PLAY ONLY PRE-MINDCRIME MATERIAL ON JUDAS PRIEST TOUR:
Queensryche vocalist Geoff Tate recently spoke with The Hairball John Radio
Show on several topics, including their recent “Operation Mindcrime” tour,
the status of the upcoming sequel Operation Mindcrime II, reflecting on some
of Geoff's favorite Queensryche tracks and their participation as part of
the much anticipated Judas Priest tour. Below is a highlight of the
interview:
Hairball John Radio Show: “Geoff, I am trying to rack my brain and remember
if you have toured with Priest before?”
Geoff Tate: “Yes, we have, we did Rock In Rio with them back in
ninety-something, I can't remember exactly what year it was, but they are a
fantastic band. And this last summer we toured with them in Europe. That's
where this whole thing actually started kicking off, the bands got along
real well musically and there is a lot of respect there and they are all
great guys and they asked us to join them on the U.S. tour. How could we say
no?”
HJ: “Geoff, as you complete more songs for 'Operation Mindcrime II” through
the year are we going to hear some of those tunes on the Priest tour or are
you going to pretty much stay with your current catalog?”
GT: “Well on the Priest U.S. tour we are planning on doing really old
material. We're gonna kind of go back to the first few records and play
around with some of that and not play anything from 'Mindcrime' or the more
modern stuff, we're gonna leave that alone."

SPV NEWS
SPV would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends
of Jim Capaldi, drummer and founding member of Traffic. Mr. Capaldi passed
away on January 28th after a battle with stomach cancer.
According to Reuters, Capaldi, 60, died in his sleep in The London Clinic
after being diagnosed with cancer last summer. His wife Aninha and daughters
Tabitha and Tallulah were at his side.
Capaldi along with Steve Winwood, Dave Mason, and Chris Wood formed Traffic
in 1967. The band released 11 albums during their career including hits
"Mr.Fantasy" and "John Barleycorn Must Die" and a number of their records
hit the Top
40 charts in the U.K. and the U.S.
The band reunited in 1994 to tour the U.S., playing with The Grateful Dead
at Woodstock '94. They were inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
last March and were planning another reunion tour that was scheduled to
begin last October. Plans were scrapped when Capaldi became ill.
Capaldi was not the first member of Traffic to pass away - Chris Wood died
of pneumonia in 1983. According to Reuters, Winwood is very upset about
Capaldi's passing and was praying, along with the rest of us, that he would
pull through.

JON OLIVA'S PAIN - 'Tage Mahal
Savatage leader, TSO collaborator and SPV solo artist Jon Oliva recently
made a whirlwind radio tour of New York City along with Savatage/TSO mate
Chris Caffery. The pair stopped by the XM Satellite Radio studios to chat
with Saturday Night Rocks host Eddie Trunk, and also found time to hang out
with Ralph and Stacey X on the nationally-syndicated show The Tour Bus.
The debut album from Jon Oliva's Pain, "'Tage Mahal," is out now.
"This is clearly the stuff I'd been waiting over a decade to hear." - METAL
JUDGEMENT
ANGRA - Temple of Shadows
ANGRA's "Temple Of Shadows" continues to generate steam and the amazing
feedback continues to roll in!
"Metal notables Angra have returned with a CD that kicks you in the teeth
right off the bat. Starting with a brief orchestration, you are quickly
drawn into the metal thunder that is the track “Spread Your Fire”. I admit I
played this one at top volume at least 4 times in a row before I let the
rest of the CD complete. For those who have yet to hear of this band I can
only recommend you visit this CD. If this band comes to the USA as a fan of
Progressive and Power Metal you cannot risk passing this up. I look forward
to their arrival." - Ken Pierce / Maximum Metal
"I couldn't help being drawn to the all around musical quality of Temple Of
Shadows. This album is the obvious result of a lot of hard work and
particular consideration for details. Every track is meticulously composed,
but the band doesn't lose site of the melodic qualities, which keep the
average listener from focusing on the sheer genius behind the music. There
are no monotonous formulas here ... each song aptly written to create a mood
and take you into another world where you can actually visualize what the
guys were thinking when they wrote it. The entire album is an anthology of
epic works ... a thoroughly pleasing experience on every level. I can't say
enough to hype Angra's Temple Of Shadows. I almost shed a tear knowing that
Metal like this is still out there ..." - John Foxworthy / Garage Radio
ERIC BURDON - My Secret Life
Eric Burdon's life has been a musical journey matched by few other
performers in rock music history. As the founding leader of “The Animals” he
was the driving force of the grittiest British Invasion Band that knocked
the Beatles off the No. 1 charts with “House of the Rising Sun”.
He then went on to help pioneer the San Francisco psychedelic rock scene
with the landmark Monterey performance, fronting “WAR” - the biggest funk
band of the 70s with its two immediate classics: “Tobacco Road” and “Spill
the Wine”.
Besides the No. 1 landslide “House of the Rising Sun”, his top charting hits
include “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”, “We Gotta Get Out of This Place”,
“It’s My Life”, “I’m Crying”, “Inside Looking Out”, “The Story of Bo
Diddley”, “Bring It On Home to Me”, and “See See Rider”, “Sky Pilot”, “When
I Was Young” and “Monterey”.
His fans all around the world will be thrilled to know that Eric has
released “My Secret Life”, his first studio album in two decades. Eric
lives a life on the road, and is currently out in support of "My Secret
Life".

COMING SOON:
KAMELOT - The Black Halo
Tampa, FL's KAMELOT are off to a roaring start in 2005 as their upcoming
album, "The Black Halo," continues to garner impressive praise ahead of it's
March 15 street date. The band recently completed work on their brand new
video for the track "The Haunting" with director which will be making the
rounds to North American video outlets in March.
Kamelot is currently circling the globe on a European and Japanese
promotional trip and will be available for North American interviews in late
February.
Some early praise for "The Black Halo":
"Here is another near perfect album from four guys who have put a spin on
the power metal scene for the better. ‘The Black Halo’ is filled with top
notch musicianship and compositions as well as plenty of guest performers.
What else could you ask for?" - Live4Metal
Kamelot - The Black Halo
Great anthemic rock from Florida's Kamelot, a wonderfully intense power
metal band from Tampa, Florida. These fellows play complicated progressive
metallic rock music that features pounding rhythms and angelic vocals. The
Black Halo features a really thick, slick, BIG produced sound that is
perfectly effective for this style of music. Most metal bands play one song
over and over...but not these guys. Each and every selection is an entity
unto itself...and each is easily identified from the other. The lead guitar
playing is so good that it hurts (!). These songs are incredibly
well-written, each one coming off like some kind of sonic, epic journey into
the center of the mind. There's a lot to digest here...fourteen whopping
cuts, including "March of the Mephisto," "Abandoned," "Nothing Ever Dies,"
and "Serenade." Combining the best elements from 1970s metal to the present,
the guys in Kamelot have come up with a direct HIT. (Rating: 5+/5) - LMNOP
- Burrn! Magazine (Japan): 89/100, ALBUM OF THE MONTH!
- Heavy Oder Was? (Germany): 11/12
- Metal Invader (Greece): 5/6, "Somebody please stop me from praising this
record, cause I might go on and write a book."
- Music Reviews/Connexion (USA): 10/10, "This album is a must buy for all
fans of any music!"
RAGING SPEEDHORN - How The Great Have Fallen
British bashers RAGING SPEEDHORN are gearing up for the May 2005 release of
their pummelling new album "How The Great Have Fallen." The album is
currently being mixed by the ever-capable hands of Joe Barresi (Queens Of
The Stone Age, Kyuss, Monster Magnet). US and European tour plans are now in
the works! Stay tuned.
In other Speedhorn news, the band will be making their US live debut at this
years annual South By Southwest convention in Austin, TX. RAGING SPEEDHORN
will be performing at The Backroom as headliners of the UK Metal Hammer
showcase on March 17th.
The tracklisting for "How The Great Have Fallen" is:
1. A Different Shade of Shit
2. Oh how the Great Have Fallen
3. Dead Man Walking
4. Master Of Disaster
5. Snatching Defeat From the Jaws of Victory
6. How Much Can a Man take
7. Fuck You Pay Me
8. Slay The Coward
9. The Infidel is Dead
10. Don’t Let The Bastards Grind You Down
ICED EARTH - Gettysburg DVD
America's premier heavy metal band are currently completing the long-awaited
"Gettysburg (1863)" DVD. This unique release will feature the epic work
"Gettysburg (1863)" from 2004's "The Glorious Burden" stepping out of its
stereo confines and expanding into a powerful 5.1-channel surround-sound
mix. In fact, there will be two different surround-sound mixes (one "metal"
and one "theatrical"), set to moving images. Additionally, the DVD will
feature a historical commentary from the Gettysburg battlefield, an in-depth
interview with Jon Schaffer, along with all of the promotional videos from
"The Glorious Burden."
A brief trailer for the DVD can be seen at the Downloads page.
Get ready to experience the most ambitious visual project ever unleashed by
a metal band!
DEMONS & WIZARDS cd
News from Hansi...
"The Demons and Wizards production is making good progress. I am happy to
tell you that 5 songs have been mixed for it already and that there are 7
more to go. How many of them we are going to use for the regular album and
how many we will use as bonus material I can ´t tell you right now. There
are 11 Schaffer/Kürsch songs and one cover tune. We will be done with
everything mid February. The album surely will be released in late spring,
or early summer. I am very pleased with the songs and so is Jon. My
favourite tune at the moment is called "Touched by the Crimson King". We
have not spoken about an album title yet but have to make a decision rather
soon. I will let you know."
SKINNY PUPPY dvd
Skinny Puppy are busy working on the Live DVD featuring footage from the
Toronto and Montreal shows from the summer leg of the tour. The DVD will be
released Spring 2005. More live dates in 2005 to come - Australia, Japan,
Europe... to be confirmed.
SEPULTURA cd & dvd
Brazilian thrashers SEPULTURA are in the process of writing material for
their new studio album, which is said to be based on the "The Divine
Comedy", widely considered the greatest epic poem of Italian literature, and
one of the greatest of world literature.
The band "have what they call 'ideas' for 18 songs, that means parts of
songs with no final structure," reads a posting on the group's web site.
"The next step is to record a pre-demo and start putting the pieces
together."
A lot of plans for the band this year. New album coming out, a live DVD to
be recorded in March and some shows arround the globe to keep the energy
flowing. For now they have shows scheduled in Argentina, Brazil and Dubai
(Arab Emirates - Middle East).

Top Stories of the Week
* In articles in recent issues of Current Biology, researchers
separately studying the dance fly and the rhesus macaque monkey
concluded that males will be males. The male dance fly was found
by a team from the University of Western Australia to sometimes
present a female with worthless tokens for the opportunity to mate
with her but that by the time she discovered their worth, he had
already hit and run. A team from Duke University found that the
male monkey will forego his own rewards (juice) in exchange for
being permitted to view pictures of female monkeys' bottoms.

Monkeys go ape for a little allure
http://observer.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,6903,1411794,00.html
Robin McKie, science editor
Sunday February 13, 2005
The Observer
There is nothing they enjoy more than sitting in front of the TV, watching
celebrities at play and images of well-formed female bottoms. Human males,
of course, are keen on it, too.
Scientists reported last week that male rhesus monkeys will 'pay' to check
out pictures of female monkey bottoms or images of socially dominant members
of their species.
The insight into monkey urges was arrived at by researchers at Duke
University in North Carolina who gave male macaques the choice of looking at
images on a computer screen of either a female's posterior or of a
socially-dominant monkey. They found that the monkeys would take a cut in
their fruit juice allowance for glimpses of either alluring vision. As they
report in Current Biology magazine, the pleasures of pay-per-view television
appear to be shared by more than one species. However, when the monkeys were
offered visions of a social inferior monkey they refused to look unless they
were paid extra rations.
'It is human nature to pay attention to powerful people,' said researcher
Robert Deaner. 'Now it seems other primates share the tendency.' As for the
bottoms, 'they reacted like men faced with a large billboard of a lingerie
model,' said his colleague, Professor Michael Platt of the university's
neurobiology department.
Platt and Deaner argue that these tendencies show how important it is for
social animals like macaques and humans to be able to check out the status
and reproductive prospects of fellow members of their species. 'This is not
simply monkey pornography,' added Platt.
However, these tendencies are not necessarily those of female macaques. 'We
have only done the experiment with males,' said Platt. 'Now we are preparing
to do it with females. We may find they have similar attitudes but that is
not really the perception we have of human females.'

Robotic ball that chases burglars
By David Millward
(Filed: 14/02/2005)
A large black ball, originally designed by Swedish scientists for use on
Mars, could be the latest weapon in the war against burglars.
The device, developed at the University of Uppsala, acts as a high-tech
security guard capable of detecting an intruder thanks to either radar
or infra-red sensors. Once alerted, it can summon help, sound an alarm
or pursue the intruders, taking pictures.
It is capable of travelling at 20mph, somewhat faster than a human
being. Even worse for intruders, the robot ball can still give chase
over mud, snow and water.
The ball relies on an internal pendulum to control its motion which,
when shifted, changes the centre of gravity and starts it rolling.
Other devices, including microphones, cameras, heat sensors and smoke
detectors are mounted on its central axis.
Nils Hulth, co-founder of Rotundus, the company which is marketing the
ball, said it was especially well-suited to patrolling perimeter fences.
The prototype, just under 2ft in diameter, weighs about 10lb. "It is
extremely light, which is why it moves so fast," Mr Hulth said.
While the current version can only raise the alarm, it could be adapted
to corner an intruder if the customer wanted, Mr Hulth added.
Patrick Mercer, the Tory MP who is campaigning to give people greater
rights to defend their property against burglars, thought the robot ball
could have potential: "It would be interesting to see whether the ball
had used grossly disproportionate force or whether it would be deemed
reasonable.
"But I would much rather a burglar be terrified of householders and
shopkeepers, rather than some sort of futuristic device."

------------------ Ambulance Gets the Boot -----------------
DUBLIN, Ireland - An ambulance received a boot while waiting
to take a seriously injured man to the hospital. The
incident occurred at the Dublin International Airport when
the police there used the boot, known as a clamp in Ireland,
to enforce the no-parking policy outside the airport's
arrivals entrance. The ambulance was parked in a section
that is clearly reserved for emergency vehicles. To make
matters worse, the paramedics had to pay for the boot's
removal with their own money because police wouldn't accept
the ambulance company's credit card. According to a
spokeswoman for the Dublin Airport authority the situation
was "deeply regrettable," but the vehicle was parked in the
reserved space for over 30 minutes when it's for "life or
death cases." Hello, it's an ambulance!

Surprised Customer Says Penis Pills Don't Work
Tue Feb 15, 8:24 AM ET
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A New Jersey man has filed a false advertising
lawsuit against a maker of herbal penis enlargement pills, alleging the
medicine does not fulfill its promises, the plaintiff's lawyer said on
Monday.
Two similar cases, filed last year in Colorado and Ohio, accuse
manufacturers of herbal dietary supplements, VigRx and Enzyte, of
falsely claiming to be able to add substantial length and girth to a
man's penis.
All three suits seek class action status and claim to represent more
than 1 million total plaintiffs.
In the latest case, filed on Jan. 21 in New Jersey state court,
plaintiff Michael Coluzzi claimed he paid $59.95 for a 30-day supply of
Alzare pills but "experienced no increase in penis size," and then was
unable to collect a promised refund from manufacturer Alzare LLC of Boca
Raton, Florida.
Neither Alzare nor chief operating officer Scott Hammond, both named as
defendants, could be reached for comment.
Coluzzi's attorney, Stephen DeNittis, said many men had been taken in by
dubious claims that the product would add up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) to
their penises by "very, very convincing" advertising, such as
infomercials featuring doctors and porn stars.
"Males, for whatever reason, may be susceptible because of what they
feel they lack," DeNittis said. "It was so believable I confirmed with
an expert (that the claims were false) before I filed the lawsuit. They
said they had done medical studies proving that it works."
The ads for Alzare tablets, comprised of ginseng, yohimbe bark,
L-arginine and other ingredients, guaranteed results within a week and
claimed a 95 percent success rate in the more than 100,000 men who have
used it, the suit said.
But last year, the Center for Science in the Public Interest filed a
complaint with the Federal Trade Commission saying the maker of Enzyte
had not backed up its claims with science.
Although thousands of complaints have been registered with local
government agencies and the Better Business Bureau, few lawsuits have
been filed because the companies appear to be "judgment proof," DeNittis
said.
"They don't have enough assets for plaintiffs to recover, and some of
the defendants are fly-by-night -- they close up shop after they get
sued," he said.
All three lawsuits claim that plaintiffs were unable to contact the
companies for guaranteed refunds after spending hundreds of dollars for
the penis enhancers.

Pot plants stolen, so what to do? CNY grower calls police
Saturday, February 19, 2005
By Aaron Gifford
Staff writer
A Madison County man complained to police that someone had taken 25
marijuana plants from him.
When sheriff's deputies responded to the Erieville home on Thursday, they
found 94 more.
"He knew it was illegal," said Sgt. Jeff Sawyer. "He said, 'I know I have
this marijuana, but I'm sick and tired of being robbed of my drugs."
This isn't a new problem for David Abbott, 42. Armed robbers broke into his
2681 Woodcock Terrace house last year, pistol-whipped him and stole his
drugs, Abbott said. At the time, he was on probation for selling marijuana,
so he said he didn't call police.
In 2001, he was attacked in an attempted burglary targeting his drugs and
money for which three Madison County men were later convicted.
"They weren't worth anything," Abbott said of the most recent theft. "Maybe
$70 worth."
A house guest, Michael H. Liddle, 22, of Eaton, was arrested Friday. He's
charged with two misdemeanors and is scheduled to appear in Nelson Town
Court March 1. Abbott said the young man had no place else to stay. "He's
just somebody I felt sorry for," Abbott said.
Abbott formerly owned Big M supermarkets in Morrisville and Onondaga County
and is now unemployed. He said he smokes pot to cope with depression.
"It helped me through tough times," he said. "It was the only thing that got
me by."
Abbott, who was charged with a misdemeanor, is scheduled to appear in Nelson
Town Court March 29.
